Crazy Taxi was a huge hit in the Arcades and deservedly so. Simple arcade action which required you as a Taxi Driver to race around town against the clock, ferrying passages. Sounds boring hey? The game is anything but. And now after great feedback on the Dreamcast, Crazy Taxi comes home to the PS2. As with the Dreamcast version of the game, you will find the original arcade city, as well as the new console only city. Other than that, there are no new improvements. This is a straight port, and unfortuanately, the PS2 version of this game is all the worse for it. Considering the PS2 has more power than the Dreamcast, you would think the Developers could have ironed out the acceptable, but noticeable pop-up and frame problems in this game. They haven't. In fact, the PS2 version is decidedly worse, as the control appears to be more difficult than it should. The graphics are arcade-cartoonish, in keeping with the spirit of the arcade title and giving you a sense of fun, although, you wont have your mouth drop open. If you're looking for a game to showcase your brand new PS2's hardware, than look elsewhere, as you wont find it here. Sound is suitably arcadish, with some funny sequences, and some funny dialogue, although repetitive. Everything about this game screams arcade and sometimes you feel like that's where this game should have stayed. The music is a bit of a stand out, with some good tracks by well known bands like The Offspring. It works well with the game, but if you aren't a fan of the music, there is nothing you can do, as there is no subtelty to it. You're either going to like or dislike the music. It all sounds the same. Gameplay wise, it is fun, but can be quickly boring and repetitive. There is no 2 player mode, however, get a couple of friends around and this game is gold. On your own though, you may find yourself switching this off quickly. There is a new mode to speak of though called Crazy Box. A mode where you are taught how to drive, as well as given some driving tests that would really put those skills you just learnt to the test. There is a good tracking mode, tracking all your stats, and rating your performances. It gives a feeling of accomplishment to be getting higher scores. However, this is again short-lived. This game is a good idea, and it works well, but only in the arcades. Ideal rental.
