Bonk's Adventure is a fantastic sidescroller while it lasts.

Bonk's Adventure recently came to the Virtual Console (VC). It was originally on the TurboGrafx-16 (which failed miserably in the US). How does this game fare in its VC debut? I'll tell you.

Bonk's Adventure is the story of a caveman named Bonk. But Bonk is no ordinary caveman. He can--you guessed it--bonk his enemies. Very original gameplay if you ask me. Many of the enemies are wacky as well. For example, in a desert world there were dancing cacti and dinosaurs with glasses. Bonk's Adventure has a variety of power ups. You can collect them almost everywhere, and they're part of what makes this game so easy. Once you get a power up, you can headbonk the ground and all the enemies will freeze momentarily. Bonk can also become invincible with another power up. There were a couple things that I felt could have been tweaked in the gameplay. First, the game was way too easy. If they had made the power ups more scarce, I think the game would have been harder. Lastly, the health system was complicated. Whenever I picked up some health I couldn't tell how far my health had gone up. The developers could have changed that to be less complicated, since obviously this is a game intended for children. Overall, I felt that the gameplay experience was very fun. Even though the game is short and easy, you'll have a blast playing it while it lasts.

The graphics in Bonk's Adventure are a lot more colorful than SNES (one of the TG16's rivals at the time) graphics. The graphics are great for their time. I'm a sucker for 2D SNES era graphics, though. :P The animations are also good. Although a few animations seem like they transition too roughly, overall the animations aren't bad. I thought that the graphics were great overall (setting aside the fact that I'm a sucker for 2D graphics).

Overall Bonk's Adventure is a title worth picking up. For only $6.00, who can pass it up? The gameplay (albeit a little short and easy) is great fun. Go ahead and pick it up on your Wii's VC! :D
