Giant robot suits, machine gun-toting trikes, and an odd but great soundtrack make this one worth anyone's time.

User Rating: 8.5 | Blast Dozer N64
Blast Corps came out way back at the beginning of the N64's lifespan, and while I played it back then, I was also lucky enough to get my hands on a copy in excellent condition this year for $5. I have to say, even after all these years and the age difference, it's still just as fun.

The basic plot is that a truck delivering nuclear missiles has malfunctioned and the auto pilot has kicked in, meaning the truck will continue to move in a direct route to its destination regardless of what is in its way. Your job is to use a bunch of construction vehicles and less conventional mechanisms to destroy everything in its path.

The game really boils down to you blowing up buildings. Simple as it sounds, it's surprisingly fun, and can be very challenging in cases where the truck moves quickly. The skill part comes in where you're required to learn how to use all of the vehicles in the game, as not all are available to you in each level. For instance, while the bulldozer is certainly effective and easy to use, you won't be able to rely on it in levels where your only means of destruction is the Backlash, a dump truck that requires you to skid at high speeds and use the rear of the vehicle to knock down buildings; the front does little to no damage at all.

In terms of sidequest material, there are a few things to do. You'll receive a medal for each level based on what you've accomplished there. There are 100 lights in each level that you have to drive by to light up, and many stages have satellite dishes as well that unlock other stages. There are a handful of race levels which give you a preset selection of vehicles to choose from at the start, and then there are levels where you have a certain amount of time to just take out any building standing. The ultimate goal is to achieve a platinum medal on every stage, but if you ask anyone who's played the game, they'll be sure to tell you it's easier said then done. You'll need to work hard, and perhaps run into a bit of luck as well.

All in all, Blast Corps gives a very unique experience that everyone should be able to have. The music, while odd, is fitting and actually catchy at times. The graphics are what you'd expect from a Nintendo 64 game, and there was nothing to be frustrated with in the control department. If you come across it in your travels, be sure to grab it. I can almost guarantee you won't be disappointed.
