Shiny, but hollow inside

User Rating: 6 | BioShock Infinite PC
I will keep this short and sweet, but be aware, there might be SPOILERS!

Bioshock Infinite is not a bad game, but it certainly is not a great game... it is just mediocre, plain and simple. At first you get very into it, the city looks amazing and you really want to know who, where, why and how. However, the game very soon begins to repeat itself and it does so very much.

GRAPHICS: The city looks pretty much the same, no matter in which part you are, same goes for closed spaces... it just feels everything is the same. A lot is blurred, even on the highest settings and you get the feeling it is really empty. I am not saying it is an ugly game, far from it, but I am saying that it looks empty, forced and non-interactive, you have a feeling that most of the buildings are just dead in the sense that it is obvious there is nothing in them. I like the brightness in the game and the effects when riding the skylines are pretty cool looking, but all in all it is nothing special.

GAMEPLAY: The loot system is just terrible. Why add so many lootable objects that give NO LOOT at all? And those that do, give you minimal amounts, so at the end of the day you have to loot everything to be stacked with ammo and cash.

Upgrades... hm... what upgrades? Weapon upgrades do not feel like weapon upgrades and most vigor upgrades are simply useless. Sometimes you will find spending your cash for upgrades just because they are there and not because you would actually need them.

Combat is boring and repetitive, so are the enemies. You simply learn to combine guns with vigor and than you play a mediocre FPS. As said, the variety of enemies should have been broader, much broader and perhaps they could have added a boss or two, to spice up the action. AI is not completely braindead, but it is dumb nevertheless. If you play with a sniper rifle, you can pretty much predict where an enemy will look out of the cover.

The gameplay is fun for first couple of hours, but than it simply gets tedious. Oh, and there is the last fight in the game, which is not fun at all. I really do not understand, why I would have to defend some sort of core of the ship, which is out in the open and completely exposed.

Some missions seem redundant and there only for the sake of making the game longer, since they do not add much or anything to the story. Also, why am I capable of jumping 15 meters into the air, just because there is a hook or skyline there, but otherwise cannot jump over low obstacles sometimes??? They could have at least made it so, that you would use a small portion of salts on high jumps, it would make it more believable.

The bright thing, however, is Elizabeth, who is one of the best if not the best sidekicks in gaming of all times. The Elizabeth - part is extremely well done!

STORY: Story is, yet again, mediocre. You are left clueless for the major portion of the game and in the end everything is overwhelming, which left a really bad impression on me. I will not go into the details, but the ending seemed confusing and stupid to me and after I have read many explanations, it still feels stupid.

To conclude with, this game definitely is NOT what some claim it is and it is definitely no masterpiece, it does not even come close. It is just a normal FPS with limited variety of enemies and without boss fights, with repetitive gameplay, an awesome sidekick, pretty graphics and interesting, but very confusing story, which ends in a stupid way. The game is hollow!
