I play a lot of visual novel games and I have never come across one with the variety and depth of Being a Dik. It also captures the Hollywood feel of the college experience better than any other game. I grew up watching movies like Dead Man on Campus and this was like playing a game version of something like that where I had more choice on where the story went. I’m not saying the game was a realistic college experience, but I’m not sure it would have been as enjoyable if it were. I could bust the game on things like most colleges don’t give you 3 days notice before you’re accepted but I won’t because I put it out of my mind and enjoyed the ride. The comedy was top notch and most importantly the game was fun. I knew right from the game’s intro, where you are given a quick questionnaire by the game’s creator and a model, that I was going to enjoy it. It had a great cast of characters, many of whom I wanted to know more about and wanted to see what they would do next. My favourites had to be the main characters father and his friend Derek. Not many games portray a strong single father character so it was nice and Derek was one of those lovable idiots you can’t help but want to be around. There are a bunch of different mini games to break up the story and reading. There are drinking mini games where you have to traverse a maze with your mouse cursor without going outside of the lines; fighting mini games where you have to input the correct button combos to win the fight; and sports mini games where you have to quickly hit the right ball. You have to also take tests in various classes where you can choose to cheat or not, choose to study for or not, and choose to buy bonuses for them or not. You can also spend your money on strippers and whores if you want, you do you. The soundtrack was awesome and made me nostalgic for the 90’s even though I don’t even think a lot of it was from that era. I do wish you had a more legitimate way to earn money as most of mine in game was given as a gift or stolen.
I played Being a Dik on Linux. It never crashed on me. It does open on the wrong monitor but that is a bug with the Ren’Py engine not the fault of the game. Alt-Tab didn’t work. The game uses up 6235MB of disk space. I did notice many achievements didn’t work, ones I knew I had done that task. I didn’t notice any spelling errors.

This was simply a fantastic game. It has something for everyone: sex; humour; mini games; a slew of choices to direct the story where you want it to go; great music; even a little political intrigue. I finished Season 1 in 9 hours 36 minutes and it was a wild ride that I didn’t want to end. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger that means I will be eagerly waiting for Season 2. If you enjoy visual novels and don’t mind lewd content give this game a go. It shows what visual novels can be in terms of depth and variety. I have given out a perfect score in just 1% of games I have played. It doesn’t mean perfect as no game is but it means I can’t list any issue with the game that harms it’s enjoyability. Thew few criticisms I can find with Being a Dik simply didn’t really matter to me and are outweighed by the positives and how much I enjoyed it. I paid $15.49 CAD for it and would have gladly paid $50.
