Battletoads is one of the best Nes games, with amazing graphics and music, and fun, challenging game-play

User Rating: 8.5 | Battletoads NES
Battletoads was released in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment system, and was developed by rare, and published by Tradewest and Nintendo. At first, many people just looked at this game as if it were just a Ninja Turtles rip off, but its actually an amazing game. While it does borrow a lot from TMNT, it definitely has a life of its own, and its one of the most memorable Nes games.

The Good
- Awesome graphics
- Great soundtrack
- Fun game-play
- Varied game-play
- Good controls
- Funny and memorable moments

The Bad
- Relentlessly hard (especially in 2-player mode
- Can get very frustrating

The story is that there are 3 toads, who are brother's, Rash, Zitz, and Pimple. They are led by Professor T.Bird. Pimple is taking the princess for a drive, but they are captured by the Dark Queen. So its up to Rash and Zitz to rescue Pimple and the princess, and defeat Dark Queen and her minions.
This game is a side scrolling beat em up, where you can move up, down, left, and right on the field. But this game has varied levels, such as a cave level, were you descend on a 2-D plane, and a bike level, where you need to jump in order to avoid the walls and enemies. It keeps things very fresh, and helps the game from getting stale. It also get's you pumped up for whats coming next.

Graphics --- 10/10
This is arguably the best looking Nes game ever. All of the characters and settings are animated very well, there's parallax scrolling and lots of depth to the levels, and everything is colorful and vibrant. This game rivals a lot of early 16-bit games, and really shows off the maximum of what the Nes can do.

Music --- 8.5/10
The music is really awesome in this game. There are a lot of really catchy tunes, and everything sounds great.

Sound --- 8/10
The sound effects are also really awesome in this game, they really make it satisfying to beat on enemies, and they add a lot to the atmosphere to the game.

Game-play --- 9/10
The game-play is great in this game. It is one of the best beat em ups ever. And the game-play is very varied as well. There are standard side-scrolling levels, levels where you are being lowered underground on a line and constantly fighting your way down, speed bike levels, water levels, maze levels, and tower climbing levels. These all make the game very fresh and exciting.

The only gripe i have with this game, is that it is relentlessly difficult. Its one of the hardest games on the Nes. Especially in 2-player mode, because there's no way to turn off friendly fire, making it impossible to avoid hitting your partner. But even in single player this game is really tough. It takes bringing your absolute A-game, even veteran players. Even though the challenge can be a good thing, i find in this game it almost starts off way to hard and continually spirals, harder and harder. The first level is relatively easy, the second is challenging, then the third level hits you with this ridiculously tough bike level, where you have to have the reaction time of a god to avoid the walls that fly up in front of you.

This game also has a lot of comic value. For example, whenever you attack someone, say your finishing a combo, you will grow ram horns and head butt them, your fist will enlarge, or a giant boot will kick your enemies. It's a really funny and memorable part of the game, and in each of the different level type's, there's different animations, which keeps the smiles coming.

This game is definitely difficult, but still worth the play. Its one of the most fun beat em ups, ever. Alone or with a friend, this game is a lot of fun, as long as frustrating games don't drive you to crazy. I would definitely recommend this game, its one of the best Nes games ever, and is one of my favorites!
