Well, here goes nothing:
I wish I could play Battlefield 3 for long periods of time. However, it's all too busy for me. I guess not all FPS's are created equal! Seriously though, I'm a casual gamer for the most part. The only "hardcore" thing about me is how long I can sit on my ass and do nothing but game. But when it comes to how involved I get within a particular game, it varies but it's generally pretty shallow. I don't know why this is. Maybe I haven't found a game that's really hit home with me. Dead Rising was one of those games that stuck with me and kept me coming back for more. More on that another time...
So, this Battlefield 3 thingy... Yeah, it was too busy for me (a shit ton of gunfire from all directions, explosions, roaring engines, chunks of terrain flying over my head) but in no way am I saying this is a bad game. Personally, it's not my cup of tea. HOWEVER, Battlefield 3 kicks ass! The graphics are SO good, the controls are nice and tight (unless you're using a controller on a PC) and there's a lot of different things to try.
If you're new to the FPS genre or generally are far more laid back with your gameplay, this game might appear to be a bit too intense at first. Nonetheless, I encourage you to stick with it. Play a few hours, stop, come back later. You may find this game to be more enjoyable that you initially thought.
