A bit similar to Super Mario Kart, but less fun.

User Rating: 6.5 | Battle Cars SNES
Battle Cars is a racing game for the SNES. There doesn't seem to be much of a plot to this game, other than youre trying to win the "Galactic Championship" or something. It is based in the future and has the player race in futuristic landscapes.

Graphics:
The graphics in this game are fairly good for its genre. The are quite a few different styles of car available, so they don't all look boring. The cars have a sort of 3D effect to them as well, and can be viewed from many angles. The courses themselves look quite drab however, but not much can be expected as the game still runs nice and fast. Inbetween races the graphics are also quite nice, with pictures of your rivals that are nicely detailed and look great.

Sound:
The sound is what you would expect from this game. There's music which is fairly suiting, being all futuristic sounding but it doesn't stay in your mind, and each courses tune might as well be the same. In the sound effect department you have your usual weapon noises and screeches etc. Nothing too amazing.

Gameplay:
You progress through the game by participating in various races around the galaxy or whatever. In each race you have a rival, who you must beat to continue to the next one. It doesn't matter what place you arrive at in the end, as long as your rival is behind you. To make sure that they DO stay behind you, there is a selection of weapons and upgrades you can attach to your car. You can upgrade the power of your weapons, or your car itself by tweaking the engine, types, shocks, turbo, jump etc etc. There are 3 weapons you use in the game: the disc (which shoots out the front of your car and ricochets down the course), the missile (which fires into the air and tracks down someone in front of you) and the grenade (which is just fired in front and creates a large and deadly explosion). The game does play well, like as mentioned before there is a nice pace to the racing etc. but it can feel monotonous, and there is an insane learning curve as your first 2 rivals are fairly easy to speed away from, the next ones are constantly at your rear waiting for you to make a mistake. This can make the game hard and frustrating (also, your rival's car doesn't seem to be able to be destroyed). It is those problems which takes a lot away from the fun of this game.

Lastability:
This game starts off easy and suddenly gets very hard. Thankfully, there are unlimited continues (I think) so you can keep battling away at it. It could take you a while.

Overview:
Graphics: Nice cool looking cars, but boring courses.
Sound: Ok music and sound FX, but don't expect anything special.
Gameplay: Interesting idea, racing between yourself and a rival. Plenty of tweaking options to your car.
Lastability: Game gets too hard too quickly, lets down the game a lot. Unlimited continues though.
