"ATV Offroad Fury" is a video game franchise that is based on the offroad vehicles known as the ATV. It had a few sequels to the PlayStation 2 version. Now, it has a portable version based on the series for the PlayStation Portable (or PSP). This title is "ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails". The game is fun and does the series right, but it does have some shortcomings.

Graphically, the game does a nice job of portraying the ATVs correctly. The ATVs are sharp and look like their real-life counterparts (if you read the disclaimer at the starting screen). The environments are really decent as well. The stadiums look like they are real. The fields are just like when people are actually there. The weather also does a nice job at defining the view. At times, there are real raindrops when a storm arises. All in all, it makes for a solid viewable game.

The audio sounds a lot nice. Like the "ATV Offroad Fury" series, you will get a lot of licensed songs that are playable in the game and in the menus. The genres range from rock to rap. From artists such as Joan Jett and Good Charlotte. The ATVs themselves sound just like their real-life counterparts. It all makes for a nice flow of sound to the game.

The controls, however, are a little bit messy. The console version had a nice fluid control set to handle an ATV right. The PSP version lost that fluidity. If you don't know how to handle the analog stick, you're reduced to the D-Pad. The physics in the game are a little demanding, too. The responsiveness of the controls are clunky at times.

Like the console versions, "ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails" has lots of modes for your pleasure. You can compete in various championships, beat your own lap times and practicing your skills on your own. You can also create your own Enduro races and race on them. You can also use the credits you gain in the single-player campaign to unlock more ATVs as well as other content.

The multi-player mode is pretty vast and sometimes weak. You will have a lot of modes to play against other players (such as mini-games, races, tournaments, etc.) whether on Wi-Fi or on Ad-hoc mode. The on-line mode is a bit staggering at times. It can drop you out of the server at times which makes for a frustrating experience.

The A.I. is also that challenging. The demanding physics combined with the rubberband A.I. also makes for a frustrating experience. The stunts you perform has to be perfect to the touch, or you will make a mess of things.

"ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails" is a nice offering for the PSP, but the on-line dropouts and difficult A.I. may make you think of something else. For those that haven't played the console versions, this game is good. For others, there is nothing new that the portable version has to offer.
