Zombie Sequel 28 Years Later Is On The Way From The Series' Original Creators

28 Days Later is one of the most beloved zombie movies of all time, and is often credited with popularizing the trend of depicting terrifyingly fast zombies after decades of undead shamblers. The braintrust of the original 2002 movie and executive producers of the 2007 follow-up, 28 Weeks Later, is reconvening to create 28 Years Later, a sequel that has intentions to launch a new trilogy.

According to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have plans to shop the movie rights around to various studios and streaming platforms as early as this week. Boyle, the report says, will direct the first film in what is intended to lead to two more thereafter, while Garland will write all three. Both will serve as producers, too.

Another sequel has long been rumored, with the next title often considered to be 28 Months Later, given the series' naming conventions, but the pair now look to leap years ahead to presumably follow the same plague that originated in the movie that launched Cillian Murphy's career. It also arguably ignited the modern obsession with zombie media, and properties like Left 4 Dead, The Walking Dead, and World War Z likely don't exist without it--or at least they'd look quite different.

Both Boyle and Garland have gone on to earn a fair number of accolades since their 2002 collaboration, with the former having directed award winners Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours and the latter having created critical darlings such as Ex Machina and the miniseries Devs.

With the project in its early days, there's no release date to report just yet, but stay tuned as this promising sequel finds a home.
