You Can Now Import Some Steam Games to GOG

"Why buy the games more than once?"

The Witcher company CD Projekt today announced a new feature for its GOG games platform that lets you import some Steam PC games to the service. It's called GOG Connect, and in a press release, CD Projekt said the feature is based on this premise: "Why buy the games more than once?"

As you might have guessed, this doesn't work across the board. Right now, there are more than 20 games that you can import from Steam to GOG (there are more than 6,000 games on Steam), though some big names are in the launch group.

No Caption Provided

Some of these include:

You can see the full lineup of GOG Connect games right here.

The GOG Connect feature is here to stay, CD Projekt said, but the games in the program will come and go. They are described as "limited-time offers made possible by participating developers and publishers."

To link your Steam and GOG libraries, you need to sign in to an active Steam account at this page. After that, you should be able to import the eligible games.

Some things to note include that you can only connect one Steam account to your GOG library--and this is permanent. For more on GOG Connect, check out this FAQ.

To celebrate the launch of GOG Connect, the platform is holding a sale on what the site calls "amazing games." You can get The Witness for $34, Saints Row The Third for $3.76, and System Shock 2 for only $2.50. Head here to see all the deals. The promo ends on June 6.

Well, the only bad thing is Steam offers achievements and GOG doesn't. I guess, the games they are talking about mostly don't have Steam achievements??

So freaking awesome and smart too, the more library i build on GoG the better, it would be cool to see more and more games switch to DRM free and make that jump, an awesome thing that genuinely surprised me. Just transferred 8 games a total value of 114 for free from Steam to GoG thanks to this.

You already had a happy customer GoG and CDPR but, now you've got a loyal one, they deserve our support, this is the gaming industry we should support. I'm excited to see more and more added to this and to GoG in general. Heck ya man!

Awesome. Again have to hand it to CDProjectRed doing right by consumers. Anti-DRM. A competitive PC Games marketplace. These guys deserve a Nobel Peace Prize for Fair Use.

@dexda: It is a thing that is happening now. You probably just got an email saying that the GOG privacy agreement is changing due to some Valve stuff.

gog is so much better than Steam, they should just make it a proper store instead of one for indies and old games.

I generally buy games on GoG rather than Steam if they're in both stores, but I did buy The Witcher 2 on Steam and then redeemed it on GoG because reasons (free weekend would let me see if I could even run it + couldn't wait for a GoG sale). Now I might do so with more games, but I doubt I'll increase my GoG library that much given above statements.

Wow, that's impressive. They're actually losing money on something like this. They deserve the publicity it gets them.

Huh. Interesting concept that probably won't have many games I actually want to be on it on it.

Edit: Also, this takes a very long time (I assume only if you have a lot of games like I do).

Oh, btw, pick up System Shock 2 from the sale if you haven't played it ;-) A real classic, and you can pull in a few mods to slightly update the visuals if you can't handle its oldschoolness

Whether you may use this or not, this is a pretty classy move by CDPR. Nothing new to see here I suppose.

Same problem with KOTOR 2.

@metallinatus: I'll make a note of that. It's kind of cool seeing more games ported to Linux. It means I have less reason to get Windows 10 in the future.

GoG kicks ass. It really does. In business practices at least. The DRM-free policies hold it back from the content volume Steam has since a lot of pubs don't want to go that route with their new titles. But luckily I love a broad enough range of games spanning decades that I can give GoG business as well as Steam :-)

@xantufrog: Indeed, CDProjekt Group are badasses. I can understand if publishers might have an issue with this, but if they fear what people would do with their product, the only way to keep those things from happening would be to do what Nikola Tesla did Teleforce: Don't make it available. Or better yet, don't even let the idea out of your head. Granted you won't make any money on it, but you won't have to worry about copyright infringement either because you didn't make the idea available to the public to copy.

@xantufrog: I mainly just use Gog for old games so publishers not liking them not having DRM is generally not been an issue. Most publishers these days don't seem to care about games that are from the 90s and back. Even Activision has their classic catalog on there so... it tends to work out for me.

That and they guarantee games will work on modern platforms which Steam does not do. So you have that protection as well. So it makes it so Steam is good for newer games and Gog is good for older games or newer games that do happen to go on there.

If they just got the rights to Raven's back catalog from the 90s I'd be set now.

@Jinzo_111887: Oh ya, those are good points. I don't know if Capcom will release RE on GOG any time soon just because they keep releasing HD versions which are profitable for them, but ya it would be so great if Konami put up the Silent Hill games. I really want digital versions of those. They don't even have to HDify them, just release them as they already were as digital versions.

@xantufrog oh, just to clarify, I SUPPORT the DRM-free practices. It's a huge huge thing that makes GoG great. I was just pointing out that it is a big reason why you see fewer new AAA releases through their store

@xshinobi: Yeah, Galaxy is still kinda wonky, and I definitely prefer using the site to download and patch games. I'm sure Galaxy will eventually get where it needs to be, but for right now it's still a little too rough to recommend.

This is how it should be with consoles too, if I have a fcking Assassins Creed game or Witcher game on PC, I should be able to play it on a console too, without buying it again. A console is nothing more than a mini computer, I am so sick of corporations like Microsoft and Sony of taking advantage of people. You may not realize it, but they are fcking us so hard in the behind with sht like subscriptions, etc.

@stevhall88: What are you talking about? This is not cross-buy from one platform to another. This is just playing your PC games using GOG's interface instead of playing your PC games using Steams interface. It has nothing to do with what you are describing. You are not getting your games for free on one platform after buying it on another. You are playing the same PC games you own on PC. Also, Microsoft has already started cross-buy with Quantum Break. You don't remember everyone buying the Xbox version of Quantum Break getting the PC version for free?
