Yakuza 6 Announced For PS4

Original PS2 title also being remade and re-released as Yakuza: Kiwami.

Sega has announced two new Yakuza projects for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

Series creator Toshiro Nagoshi appeared at Sony's PlayStation conference at TGS 2015 to reveal Yakuza: Kiwami--known in Japan as Ryu Ga Gotoku: Kiwami. This is a new version of the original PlayStation 2 title which has had its graphics upgraded, along with a new scenario and system.

Although the exact extent of the remake is yet to be detailed, it seems the original game is being remade in the Yakuza 5 engine.

The re-release will be available on January 21, 2016 in Japan for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It is unclear whether Sony or Sega plan to release this game in western games. Previous entries in the series, however, have been made available in North America and Europe some time after their Japanese launches.

Nagoshi also revealed Yakuza 6 is in development for the PlayStation 4. Although details on this weren't provided, a Fall 2016 release date was announced.

The appearance of a new Yakuza was teased in early September 2015, when the website for the series--known as Ryu Ga Gotoku in Japan--pointed towards something happening on the September 15, 2015.

Toshiro Nagoshi also said earlier this year that he was planning to make an announcement at TGS 2015.

"I’m so anxious for Tokyo Game Show," he said during a NicoNico stream. "Although I’m not allowed to say why I’m feeling this way, yet."

"We’ll announce [a new game] at Tokyo Game Show, and it’ll be a good one," he added. "And I believe that Sega’s live showing at Tokyo Game Show will be the most exciting one we’ve seen in a while."

The series, which follows Kazuma Kiryu's rise through the ranks of the Yakuza and his ongoing conflicts with rival factions of the crime family-celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year. Although the game places a heavy emphasis on its narrative, this is wrapped in an open-world experience that delivers action through hand-to-hand combat.

It's so stupid they don't market this better for western consumers.. I would have thought with the 'next gen' consoles needing their little exclusives to force you to buy their shitty machines that this would at least have been marketed well lol.. ah well they deserve whatever they don't get

Yakuza games are much closer to western games than many Japanese games, it's surprising that they take ages to get localized for the west, and they often don't reveal any plans to do so for awhile. Maybe they don't sell well in the west, I don't know never looked up the numbers.

Glad yakuza 6 will be current gen only. It's ludicrous how slow Japanese devs have been to move on to new hardware, though given the market over there I suppose I can't blame them too much.

I love the Yakuza games for the PS2. These games are the only thing that ever make me regret not have a PS3 or PS4.

@marcio_br: And then they take 3 fucking years to translate fucking SUBTITLES into English. That's the funniest.

Translate them to English and maybe that'll be the reason I'm missing to buy a ps4.

One of the best trailers I've ever seen. That editing, that slap hilariously out of place.
