According to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, Microsoft is still looking to bring the critically acclaimed MMO Final Fantasy XIV to Xbox.

During a recent interview with Game Watch (via VGC), Spencer was asked about whether there was still the possibility of ever seeing Square Enix's MMO on the Xbox three years after he commented on making the goal real.

Now Playing: FINAL FANTASY XIV - Flow

"We certainly announced that (laughs). Naturally, we haven't given up yet," Spencer explained. "This is a commitment from both Microsoft and Square Enix to gamers and we will continue to coordinate our efforts."

Although no new platforms have been announced at this time, Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida has previously said that he has spoken to Spencer about resolving the platform issues. "To play an MMORPG [on Xbox], there are 2 regulations for Microsoft which stand in the way of making crossplay feasible. Unless these regulations are rejected, there is no meaning,” Yoshida explained to Wccftech in 2019.

Since launching in 2010, Final Fantasy XIV has been brought to PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and most recently PlayStation 5. The latter was an improved experience for console players featuring full HD graphics options, 60fps, and native 4K resolution. The current-gen upgrade was made free in 2021 for users who have an active subscription and are registered for the PS4 version.

Elsewhere, it's been confirmed that FFXIV's entire 6.X storyline will center around the thirteenth shard.
