Xbox One will function without Kinect

Every system will ship with camera, but it won't need to be plugged in for console to function, Microsoft confirms.

Microsoft chief product officer Marc Whitten has confirmed that though every Xbox One will ship with a new version of Kinect, the camera will not need to be plugged in for the next-generation console to function.

No Caption Provided

"Like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn't plugged in, although you won't be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor," Whitten told IGN.

He added that users will have the ability to "completely" turn off the Kinect through system settings. When toggled "off," the Kinect is not collecting any information at all, Whitten said.

"You can turn the sensor back on at any time through settings, and if you enter into a required Kinect experience (like Kinect Sports Rivals for instance), you'll get a message asking if you want to turn the sensor back on in order to continue," he said

Whitten also confirmed that there will be no cross-platform voice chat between Xbox 360 and Xbox One, though players will be able to send text messages between the consoles. He also revealed that an Xbox One user will be able to see what their Xbox 360 friends are playing and vice versa.

The Xbox One launches in November for $500.

MS really are the u-turn kings. They're unable to make a decision that sticks.

1 - Now Kinect can be turned off "just like Sony'.

2 - Now they are going to sell XB1 without Kinect for cheaper price 'just like Sony.

Every u-turn they make, simply adds more confirmation how good Sony are at planning and design. They should have hired Sony as a consultant.

It really is an ill thought out mess. There will be people paying for Kinect and never using it, plus people who don't buy Kinect and only get half the systems functionality. They made the mistake of making a hackable spycam integral to the GUI experience, and now that GUI experience isn't available to all users.

Turning it off in the preferences is still open to an online security exploit. If a hacker can get through to the camera and control it, he can just as easily turn the preference back on. The only 100% safe protection is to unplug the damn thing but then you won't get the GUI functionality to turn it back on if requested by a game.

You xbox guys must be extremely loyal to put up with all this. I would be jumping ship to xbox if Sony messed up this bad with all the u-turns and a less powerful console.

Well I think that mass gamer backlash worked. So literally almost every "announcement" they made at E3 or prior to E3 has been squashed out of complete disdain for them; good job, gamers, seriously well done. We love progression but only where necessary. We're already looked at as statistics in almost everything we do both in and out of gaming and for this to now not be a mandatory piece of the next gen console Microsoft is putting out is a great step forward for consumer awareness and market control.

I applaud those who stood up and weren't accepting of what Microsoft wanted to impose on us.

Ok so they say it will "function" without the kinect, but i wonder how long it will take for a message along the lines of "please plug in kinect to continue" to pop up

Now that you don't need the Kinect for the Xbox one to work, surly it would make sense to release a Xbox one bundle without the Kinect. It might actually do them good.

Ms will still tell developers to put kinect stuff in the games as much as possible to try and force people into using it. Eventually the public will get used to it and the Gen afterwards when they force it on everyone......people will be more desensitized to the Kinect being apart of the console. MS may of lost the Kinect battle right now but they have plans to win the war.

@billnye69 How can you ever be desensitized to a hacker spying on you via the hacked spycam. People have got enough problems with a hackable PC online. At least the PC is not online all the time and can be turned off. An always on camera in your personal space is in a different league altogether. Turning it off in the preferences can still be hacked back on. MS fanboys are willing to turn a blind eye just to have the gimmicks, but normal people will not stand for it.

I will kick Sony's ass if they go down that route as well. I want to control my console relaxing in a chair with a precision joystick and buttons controller, not waving my arms around to form gestures and shouting commands like an idiot wasting energy. Human fingers are the most acurate part of our body. Don't waste them.

The future will be what the public choose. Not what MS claim is going to be the future so they can sell you it. Their whole premise is to fix a problem that does not exist in the first place. Going on their u-turn track record, they are not in the habit of predicting the future correctly and making the right decision, so how can you trust their judgement that Kinect is paving the way to the future. Eventually it will be dumped completely like all the other massive u-turns.

I honestly don't care if whatever or whomever is spying on me because i got NOTHING to hide. I like the xbox 360 and always have so I will buy an xbox one regardless of price or whatever package it comes with it.

Xbox one has been confirmed it has maxed out pre-order sales at best buy, amazon, etc. I am not fond of the kinect and I would never use but it is what it is. I'll be having fun playing while all the complainers can sit in a corner and cry, so really, people need to stop complaining and just deal with it.

This is gaming...NOT poltics....so quit debating

@XDeath2U90X Gaming not politics? hmm. One of the largest industries in the world and you don't think that it's political? Maybe in the early stages of quarter gaming in an arcade, but it certaintly is now.

@XDeath2U90X its not about having anything to hide. It's about people having the right to buy a product that is going inside their personal space (their house) and they have a right for that space to be 100% private.........because God knows that everywhere else is filled with cameras where everyone is now exposed to the world and can be humiliated with adobe software at the drop of a mouse click.

When toggled "off," the Kinect is not collecting any information at all, Whitten said.

That means when it "is" on, it "is" collecting information, which means they actually "are" spying on you. Wow!

@darkprince2 what he meant, is that the kinect isn't "listening" when it's off, so you can't start the console by saying "xbox fire up" or whatever the power command is...

@blackace not neccesarily. The xbox one is primarily built to bring in wider range of entertainment. Removing the kinect completely would be useless for the xbox one and waste all money put in to it.

What people don't seem to realize is they are NOT changing the way gamers or hardcore gamers play, their just bringing in more customers. It's common sense, more audience more money. There is nothing wrong with that. I think its smart. If you payed attention to E3 there's a lot of potential for us gamers for an extra $100 ITS WORTH IT!

Why not have voice commands available via headset if the Kinect is turned off? It's kinda sad how this product is falling apart due to bad marketing and horrible explanation on behalf of Microsoft.

We will always have to sacrifice certain civil liberties and privacy in order to take advantage of advanced technology, but is it worth it? Obviously Microsoft is not doing a good job in convincing us it is.

With the voice recognition stuff with Xbox One why did I not hear about them making it where we could say what we wanted in a message but have it appear in text if we so decided to as the current way of sending text messages on Xbox 360 is painful.

It is not Xbox One anymore MS. I didn't like your original plan for many reasons and I associate all you wanted at the beginning with the Xbox One title. Please change the title of the console and make sure this thing works properly and if the rumours are true of a delay til Feb 2014 cuz of all the changes well I don't mind that as long as you get everything right with the console and people don't end up with machines that are total headaches.

One thing is to make the Kinect not mandatory.

A completely different thing is not to include it inside the box.

Conclusion: You don't have to plug it in order to play games, but you still have to pay for it in order to play games.

wow Microsoft is blowing it.

Either stick to your guns, or release a version of the console WITHOUT KINECT!

The whole reason Xbone is $500 is because of the kinect. Sony cut Eye to release at $400, Microsoft could've done the same if they are now saying Kinect is not required!!!

If they are forcing everyone to have a kinect they might as well stick to their guns and use it!

if xbone was $400, after they reversed their DRM policies, and it didn't sell with a kinect, it might have made me really think twice about which console i preorder. they lost me as a customer to PS4 this gen and i think through all this "damage control" microsoft has been doing post E3 they are just making themselves look weak. they are making some smart moves and other poor decisions.

The way that the console started clearly says that all they care about is sucking away your money, as does the fact that they reluctantly pulled a U-turn on just about everything their new Xbox stood for. Clearly all of the companies just want your money, but at least the developers down at Sony care enough to keep the gaming atmosphere the same way that gamers have grown so accustomed to, rather than trying to get a tighter grip on gamers' wallets.
