Xbox One will function without Kinect

Every system will ship with camera, but it won't need to be plugged in for console to function, Microsoft confirms.

Microsoft chief product officer Marc Whitten has confirmed that though every Xbox One will ship with a new version of Kinect, the camera will not need to be plugged in for the next-generation console to function.

"Like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn't plugged in, although you won't be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor," Whitten told IGN.

He added that users will have the ability to "completely" turn off the Kinect through system settings. When toggled "off," the Kinect is not collecting any information at all, Whitten said.

"You can turn the sensor back on at any time through settings, and if you enter into a required Kinect experience (like Kinect Sports Rivals for instance), you'll get a message asking if you want to turn the sensor back on in order to continue," he said

Whitten also confirmed that there will be no cross-platform voice chat between Xbox 360 and Xbox One, though players will be able to send text messages between the consoles. He also revealed that an Xbox One user will be able to see what their Xbox 360 friends are playing and vice versa.

The Xbox One launches in November for $500.

@Sarg1010 MS is not forcing you to buy anything. Kinect is still an essential part of Xbox 1 Its part of the package. Like buying a couch without cushions. Sure you can still sit on it but it won't be as comfortable.

As a gamer who was only getting a PS4, MS has done a great job of
unfuking themselves in the months since E3. The worst thing MS did was
letting that arrogant pretentious prick Don Mattrick do their press
conference. A lot of the questionable features may have been more
palatable to gamers if they werent delivered by a Bobby Kotick clone.

But kudos to MS for listening to gamers. Now this generation
will come down to nothing but the GAMES. MS will have a year one
advantage with the exclusives they have purchesd, but i dont believe
that is a practical business model. Sony's 1st party studios will out
muscle MS's wallet in the long run. But nice job leveling the playing
field MS now i may just get an Xbone in the spring(titanfall looks
awesome) in the spring.

@navarz @R-tofen No joke, what exclusives has MS had over the last 18-24 months, while Sony's 1st party studios keep churning them out. Thats also how the xbox/ps2 generation ended as well. Im just guessing history will repeat self once again.

@lonesamurai1 @R-tofen @navarz i dont play games for an emotional connections. Gears is only one game. Sony has loads of 1st party heavy hitters. Halo, Gears, and Forza are nice but there is just not enough exclusive quality on 360.
