Xbox One will function without Kinect

Every system will ship with camera, but it won't need to be plugged in for console to function, Microsoft confirms.

Microsoft chief product officer Marc Whitten has confirmed that though every Xbox One will ship with a new version of Kinect, the camera will not need to be plugged in for the next-generation console to function.

No Caption Provided

"Like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn't plugged in, although you won't be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor," Whitten told IGN.

He added that users will have the ability to "completely" turn off the Kinect through system settings. When toggled "off," the Kinect is not collecting any information at all, Whitten said.

"You can turn the sensor back on at any time through settings, and if you enter into a required Kinect experience (like Kinect Sports Rivals for instance), you'll get a message asking if you want to turn the sensor back on in order to continue," he said

Whitten also confirmed that there will be no cross-platform voice chat between Xbox 360 and Xbox One, though players will be able to send text messages between the consoles. He also revealed that an Xbox One user will be able to see what their Xbox 360 friends are playing and vice versa.

The Xbox One launches in November for $500.

I personally like the idea of Kinect being mandatory with the console. It will bring some cool forms of innovation over the next 7-10 years since developers are going to be required to make some use of, in one form or another. I also salute MS for allowing it to be unplugged so that all the retarded TINFOIL HAT types can chill out and find another conspiracy to bitch about. ; )

@murderusone totally agree. The tin foil hat wearers will always find something (I actually think most of them aren't tin foil hat people though, most of them are MS haters or Sony fans that just jump on any opportunity to hate the Xbox One)

@jeffrobin Yep, spoken like a true fanboy. All of the "haters" concerns are wrong or biased because we secretly favor one company over another.

Grow up and critically think before you post.

@murderusone Actually there might not have been much innovation going on anyways, since the vast majority of good games end up on both consoles. And since PlayStation doesn't have a kinnect, developers probably wouldn't have invested too much time in making one port more interactive than the other.

@Noire1297 @murderusone

I see what you are saying, but I truly enjoyed being able to switch out weapons and armor using voice commands on Skyrim rather than constantly switching to the submenus. It allowed me to stay in the moment instead of constantly being pulled out of the environment. I was also able to lead my follower, etc. That is the kind thing that stood out for me about the Kinect. I believe that this is the kind of thing that can change gaming for the good, if it were implemented more often.

@innocent69 @Revl8n It's not increasing the cost of the console, so who cares.

@Revl8n and Sony should give you the option to not have a touchpad on your controller?

Right. It should be an option for those who want to use it. Key word: option.

@wowgrandpa I know you were being sarcastic but people will start flocking to buy the XB1 if they already haven't started so you are quiet prophetic in a unintended way..

Why do people say MS changed things again? if it has a controller it can obviously control around the menus (the controller costed hundreds of millions to redesign)... I never thought for a minute that Kinect was the only way to control the console so this isn't any surprise.

Most people are reluctant to changes. They should be aware that they're going to stick with this generation for around 10 years, and in some years from now, they will probably value the Xbox and it's extra features beyond traditional gaming.

and microsoft have pulled yet another 180 lol. At least they aren't as stupid as we thought, although they are still stupid for making it mandatory in the first place.

@CptJohnnyRico @Deadlysyns87 @kohle36 @ArchoNils2 yup, Angry Joe the man who only reviews Xbox 360 and PC copies. Honestly, just go and look at all of his reviews, they are all Xbox 360 or PC versions of each game. It seems that Angry Joe is not a fan of the worthless piece of sh...t PS3 :p

Alright, I am officially worried about Xbox One. The way its going - with them desperately catering to all the sceptics - they are gonna end up with a machine as dull as the PS4... Though with less GDDR or whatever.

When I first saw E3 this year, I was aaaall about the PS4. Their insistance on not changing anything, felt like a warm hug to all the worried (and price-concerned) core-gamers out there. Heck, I didn't even bother to watch Microsofts show, because I already knew, what I needed to know: Always online, huge bother with pre-owned games and the stupid dance-camera will be forced upon everybody.

Eventhough Sony had no real innovations I could put my finger on or games I wanted to play - and the biggest impact of their show was Tretton sticking it to Microsoft in the closing minutes with Sony's "no change"-policy - the case was closed. Take my money, Sony, I begged.

But then, through my job, I heard more about Xbox One. Alot more. And I watched the E3 show and it all started to make sense. Especially the stupid dance camera.

Though Microsoft changed their DRM policies, they still stuck to their guns with the Kinect 2.0. I started seeing the console and camera as "One" (pun intended!) and the possibilities it would open up for developers, when they knew every Xbox One owner had one of these bad boys hooked up - ready to do all those insane things, they claim its capable off. Scan your face, tell your mood, keep track of your fingers, your BMI, if you have goosebumps or not, I mean: thats a next-gen thing if there ever was one.

Now I wanted one, and the PS4 seemed decidedly boring in comparison.

Obviously haters are gonna hate. To many, the Kinect simply boils down to: Lag, shovelware and waving your arms about, when you could just press a button.

But, I thought that Microsoft had enough confidence in their product, to see through that. Confidence in the fact, that the Kinect 2.0 will change the landscape of gaming, and those haters will eventually "get it", when they set it up and start messing around with it, cos' - come on - it wouldn't kill ya, would it?

But it seems Microsoft doesn't trust their own instincts anymore. Of course, they HAVE dropped the ball a few times as of late, so they may - understandably - be a bit shaken, but now its gone to far. Now they are simply too eager to please (almost on the level of Gil from The Simpsons) and the fact of the matter is: If they keep this up, they will end up ruining their "edge" and the very reason why anyone would choose an Xbox One over PS4.

Microsoft should perhaps seek out Nintendo for some wisdom.

Remember the Wii? Many thought the whole idea of controlling with motion as dumb, but many didn't. When the machine finally arrived, people invited their friends over for a round of Wii Tennis and those friend "got it". And the console went on to spread like wildfire. People had to try it, to understand it and Nintendo had confidence in this, no matter what the core gamers said.

That machine wrote history - and it was even a generation behind from the get-go.

Xbox One isn't. Its packed with muscle, clouds, an awesome controller and original IPs to die for.

If they could just get their balls back from the impound, the Xbox One could be the trend-setter for the future of consoles.

@Freezeryder If the very first version of the Xbone is the "future" of consoles, then it's no future I want to be part of. The Wii is different in that the motion controls were THE console, not some nailed-on extra like the kinect. Yes, motion controls were new, but they worked. The kinect was new, and it failed, but MS is still trying to shove it down people's throats, and nobody wants it.

Poor guys. They really do not know what their product to be. They only know to do 180's. Though it is what every company should do to avoid crashes, it is kind of sand seeing them do so many as they are.

so, the MAIN selling point of the console is actually optional? They said it was the future and was an integral part of the console, and now it isn't? So that makes your console a Ps4.

The thing is this was probably planned all along.

@andrescapo_ Actually it's:

1. Remove DRM/24Hr BS - 180

2. Allow indies to self publish - 180

3. No headset - 180

4. No Kinect required - 180

For a grand total of: The originally planned Xbox 720

Xbox for the win yet again :) ...I will be honest with you MS I am a huge fan of xbox and all you do be it PCs and Phones.. but I have had Kinect 1 since it released with xbox 360 slim and it has been in my closet ever since. I have not once had the need to use it nor the want to use it, no games for it have ever appealed to me. but regardless I do see it has something of great use one day and it is a really cool device. I just hope Kinect 2 has more use for games..but thank you for not making it necessary to play xbox but I still wanna own it for the potential use it has.

hummm, ok. This shots the last complaint I had about the system. They pretty much reversed everything I hate about it now. If I can leave Kinetic unplugged than thats something. I do not trust software "off mode" where security can be compromised. You can't beat unplugged hardware.

Ok, I will wait about a year or so, once the RRoD and YLoD happens and be addressed then I will choose whichever console is delivering on the promises. Also, I want to be sure Microsoft or Sony won't change policies once you are hooked as I do believe they can do that.

Personally I am not too much into kinetic type gameplay, I rather not tire while playing games. But hypocritical of me is that for my kids, I do believe it is a healthier life style, you know, moving around and jumping and things like that so for them it might be a better and healthier choice.

I have to agree. They have reversed everything I hated. I said last month that there was no way I was going to buy the new Xbox if I were forced to have the spy device mandatory.

Well, looks like my main concern (and it was a stickler for me) has been rectified. It is a shame that I still have to buy it bundled in though. But the hate is gone now.......
