Xbox One sells 115,000 units in the US during April

Microsoft announced today that the Xbox One sold 115,000 units during April 2014 in the United States. That's 76 percent better than the Xbox 360 when compared to its first six months on the market.

Separately, the NPD Group released its report today for April 2014, showing that the PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One during the month. Sony has not disclosed specific monthly sales figures for its platform, though we know it must be north of 115,000. [Here's our full write-up for NPD April 2014 data]

In addition to 115,000 Xbox One units sold during April 2014, Microsoft shifted 71,000 Xbox 360s. That's more than the PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii, Microsoft said. In terms of software, Microsoft sold 447,000 Xbox One games and 2.2 million Xbox 360 games in April. According to Microsoft, that makes up 53 percent of total software market share.

In addition, Microsoft says the average Xbox One owner has purchased three games to date.

Looking ahead, Microsoft will launch the $399 Kinect-free Xbox One unit starting June 9. That's the same day of Microsoft's E3 2014 press conference, where the company is expected to announce new games for later this year and beyond.

115,000 Lemmings that will probably be a little put off by the fact that had they waited just a little longer, they wouldn't have had to buy the XFail with the giant paperweight.

So if "Life to date, sales of PS4 and Xbox One hardware have more than doubled the combined sales of PS3 and 360 hardware through their first six months of sales" and "(XBox 1 sales) are 76 percent better than the Xbox 360" Can you figure out how much better PS4 sales are than PS3? (round off "more than double" to 100% better.) Or is there not enough information to do the math? I suck at math.

<< LINK REMOVED >> it doesn't matter because both the 360 and the PS3 were released with limited supplies for close to a full year.

The only thing that matters is that there are over 1 million One units sitting on store shelves and the PS4 keeps selling out.

I would have titled this article: 38% of Microsoft gamers choose to purchase an antique Xbox 360 over a shiny new Xbox One.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Dude...yes lets look back. Like at how the 360 was in limited quantities for the first 10 months of its release and THAT is the reason why the One is outselling it.

The 360 was on backorder for almost a full year, the there are over 1 million One units sitting on store shelves. Now compare that to the PS4, over 7 million in customers hands and they still cannot keep stores stocked up on it.

Of course it's outpacing XBox 360, the yields were around 40% and there was a massive shortage for almost a full year.

Of course the X1 is outselling the 360 within the first six months of each console's respective life cycle. The 360 had an availability shortage for probably 6-9 months after it was released (maybe longer), and the X1 has been available everywhere since release. There is no shortage of X1s, to be sure.

<< LINK REMOVED >> why you keep pushing this, I don't know. You need to understand that you have your numbers wrong. And that's ok, because it doesn't matter - X1 sold really really well. So go play Titanfall and have some fun with your system

It's a shame we can't get worldwide numbers, to give a better indication of total sales. Even so, if those sales numbers were to continue throughout the year, by March 2015 that would equate to around 1.26 million for the US market. I'm sure sales will increase with the unbundled Kinect version, during the holidays, and when more exclusives become available.

Microsoft needs to come out swinging at E3.

<< LINK REMOVED >> - Yes, I know that, but that still will not affect the NPD data, which focuses on the US market only. That is why I did not mention other territories. We need worldwide numbers (inclusive of those other territories), not these NPD numbers.

The PS4 sold just over 7.2 million units to CUSTOMERS.

The One sold 5 million...to stores. MS will not say how many were actually sold to people and best estimates places it just under 4 million.

If MS or Sony really wanted to sell consoles they would have made the next gen consoles backward compatible.

Oh yes they should make the PS4 and Xbox One backwards compatible.

PS4 should get backwards compatibility with PS3 games since it's getting PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility soon while the Xbox One should get backwards compatibility with Original Xbox and Xbox 360 games.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If they made the consoles backwards compatible, they would have been much more expensive. Remember the good old days? When consoles weren't backwards compatible and you'd just turn the old one on if you wanted to play an older game? Yea. Do that and stop bitching about a meaningless feature that will just make the console more expensive.

<< LINK REMOVED >> quite the opposite good sir. Notice how they make money and continued sales off the new and old hardware. Why bundle something if people will buy them separately? Not to mention if XB1 was backwards compatible, 360 owners would trade in their consoles and MS sees none of that money.

PS3 and XB360 still remains a solid choice for gamers who want to play, but can't afford to go next gen(These players, once hooked on game franchises, etc will probably upgrade to next gen in a couple years).

So there was no reason to screw over the people who bought the console with Kinect by making a Kinectless version.

<< LINK REMOVED >> how are you now screwed over? Sell your kinect if you feel like you payed $100 extra. A kinect-less XB1 keeps the console relevant and a more equally matched competitor with PS4. Now that they are both $400, we might see a swing in sales.

exactly right, also you don't need Kinect to do voice commands. They could offer voice commands like they do on PS4 with the use of a mic or your headset.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's one of the reasons everyone is so worked up at MS. They said it was integral to the system, The OS won't work with out, yadda yadda. Unplug it and the console works just fine. For me, the novelty of voice commands wore off in about a day. Now, the only thing my kinect does is sign me into XBL when I sit down on the couch.

I really hope the new consoles start selling a lot more soon. The old consoles are holding back the development of games a lot. As long as games are released on the old consoles as well the only thing you can do with the newer consoles and PC is add smoother graphics, which is only a small part of what's great with newer hardware. Gameplay and such will suffer the most.

this is actually very bad for MS, its most likly the reason for the kinectless x bone announcement. dont forget this is only US which is MS's best market losing by an margin here is a kick in the teeth as sony probably have more then twice MS's sales when you look at all the other markets the ps4 is in. even this announcement that, yes, will mean increased sales but 13 counties will just not cut it other then put them on par (at best) in worldwide sales for a bit.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> we know why it wasn't selling in more regions thats because the kinect was only programmed (most likely) to do a few languages and MS rushed to bring it out so much that they never went further then 13 territories. now because kinect will not be required they can ship out anyware now, but between the ps4 they need to first conquer the US before they can even think about the rest of the world.
