Xbox One games will need to check in online, possibly once a day

The Xbox One is "fundamentally designed to be expanded and extended by the Internet as many devices are today," says Microsoft's Phil Harrison.

Xbox One requires an Internet connection and needs to check in with the Xbox servers in order to continue functioning, Microsoft has clarified.

No Caption Provided

Microsoft's official line on the Xbox One is that it requires the Internet, but does not require a constant connection.

In an interview with Kotaku, Microsoft executive Phil Harrison attempted to clarify the position. The Xbox One "requires, at some point in the beginning and at various times through its on state, to connect to our cloud and to our Internet. That is to deliver Xbox Live functionality, that is to deliver download content to you, that is to deliver some of the innovations around TV and entertainment that we showed today."

Harrison added that the Xbox One's need to connect to its servers "depends on the experience."

"For single-player games that don't require connectivity to Xbox Live, you should be able to play those without interruption should your Internet connection go down. Blu-ray movies and other downloaded entertainment should be accessible when your Internet connection may be interrupted. But the device is fundamentally designed to be expanded and extended by the Internet as many devices are today."

But when asked how long players can go between having to check in online with a single-player game, Harrison said, "I believe it's 24 hours."

In another interview with Polygon, however, a Microsoft representative explained Harrison's 24-hour claim as a "potential scenario" for the upcoming next-gen console. "While Phil [Harrison] discussed many potential scenarios around games on Xbox One, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail," said Microsoft.

"There have been reports of a specific time period--those were discussions of potential scenarios, but we have not confirmed any details today, nor will we be."

Speaking yesterday, Microsoft president Don Mattrick reiterated that players don't need to be always connected to play games on Xbox One. "No, you don't always have to be connected," he said. "Gamers can calm down; we've got you covered."

"Gamers can calm down; we’ve got you surrounded". Always online and unclear secondhand or I guess second account fee policy. What about different user accounts on a shared by all xbox one? is every account owner required to pay a fee when he tries to play a game on the HDD registered to a family member account. I guess Micro$oft is stupid enough to dictate that. Micro$oft is the next tyrant.

What kind of bullshit double talk is this? So glad I'm getting a PS4. I can't believe Microsoft would literally go out of their way to make the experience of owning a console so painful.

I don't understand how MS hasn't figured this stuff out already, this is obviously one of the things that people are worrying over they should be able to give a definitive answer on it day one, none of this "I believe so" nonsense.

@rahmie0789 The Xbox One is just easy to hate on these days. Most people who hate on it haven't even looked into it much. They just read a headline and start spouting out or they complain about how its only functions are TV and no games when Mircosoft CLEARLY stated that E3 was for all the big games and the conference was just a quick glimpse at two exclusives.

Lol: "designed to be expanded and extended by the Internet". Expanded? Extended? How is making the machine kill itself if it loses its internet connection an extension or expansion?

Imagine if a doctor took a healthy person and operated so that they needed life-support to survive. Is that what MS means by "expanded" and "extended"?

MS are testing the market research waters as long as backlash remains strong they wont implement any of these scenarios at launch but that's not to say they wont 6 months after when people have invested. T&C's lol

By requiring that the console "check in" every 24 hours they have pretty much told every gamer in the military that they don't matter. Out on deployment for up to 9 months and you have an expensive paperweight after the first day, yup that sounds like it's worth a good chunk of money. If Sony comes out with something even remotely similar I will be staying with the current generation of consoles and my PC.

@malkavain4 I agree, which is why I can't believe it would be true. I just think they don't want people to know they can do whatever disconnected because their partners can't make money if you are. They just dont want anyone to only use it for bluray and single player games because they will lose money.

Microsoft knows better than to alienate all those people serving, and all those who play in internetless conditions. They just don't want people thinking "barebones".

Okay, I understand that you need online verification to install your games in order to prevent piracy. But why, in the name of God, does the X-Box One need to verify your game AFTER you've already linked it to your account? Am I reading this wrong?

So if we want to play the system we have to check in to the internet to play even single player games, at least that's what I took from it. But the only thing I say is WHY? You didn't even explain why that's supposedly required. I guess the bigger issue is just the fact that you need internet. That will lose them quite a few sales.

Yep. People who buy this console are going to be reamed hard.

+Internet required to play games.

+Carry a game over to a friends place to play? Gotta pay a fee when you get there. And pay another fee to play it again on your home console.

=This console is looking crappier every time I read about it.

Why am I getting the feeling that MS is hiding something important from us in regard with the 2nd-hand / used games and gamers will not like it very much!? The Internet check-in at regular basis is essentially a form of always-on requirement to me. I hope I am wrong, but things certainly don't look good here. Sigh..., videogaming is more and more complicated and restrictive.

WTH ? Do I have to get every single Xbox 1 game out of the closet every 24 hrs and run it for a second just so I don't lose ownership of it and saved content and so on ? WTH is this ? I don't understand !

@DeViLzzz I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way. It just needs to verify whatever you're currently playing at set intervals. WHY it needs to do this is beyond me. I certainly don't like it.

Case in point, if you don't have an internet connection, you will probably, in some way, be screwed with this console. I may just wait and go with Sony. If Microsoft had more console exclusives, they could probably pull something like this off. No halo, Gears of War, or even a decent franchise? I think Microsoft is going to regret giving the edge to Sony .

So what is the deal with the 24 hour period? That seems like a pretty lame compromise between always online, and never online. Does this mean that your single player game becomes unplayable if you don't check for updates every 24 hours, or you lose your game progress? What the hell? There seems to be something shady going on here, just not sure what exactly.

This console is starting to remind me of how I felt when Def Jam: Icon was coming out a while ago...

Every time I saw a preview of that game, I felt worse and worse about it. And of course when the game finally came out, it was so bad that it got its studio closed, and deservedly so, IMO.

The xbox one here is on the same track unfortunately. I feel worse and worse about it with every article I read. So far, the ONLY thing that I've seen that I like is Forza 5, and I'm even skeptical about that because it's supposed to be a day one launch title, and those never turn out as good as they could have been. This thing just keeps going down hill. At this rate, it may not matter what they announce at E3, because by then, it may already be buried.

**** you Microsoft. Play this shit by yourself. Actually where is my old PS2? Seems like I still did not complete even a half of RPGs from that console. And looks like I didn't even need money, internet and in-game gold to play it. HD? Camera? Online service? Share? **** you Microsoft.

@corteztheg We don't know that for sure, again those are just speculations on your behalf. Also, I don't see how this is problem if the data they collect is anonymous. Game developers could use that data to understand what parts of their games impacted gamers most. Like for example collecting data that reads brain stimulation or any other aspects. (These are just concepts).

All in all, we can't jump to false conclusions until there are concrete proof.

Covered in what, microsoft dung?!
One thing is that they implement this idiotic system, but that they actually have the balls to go out and claim that their box doesn´t require you to always be connected?! it´s an outright lie! It does require you to be connected, ALL the time. And don´t anyone come here and tell me that this isn´t always-on, because it is. It just allowes some room for momentary losses of signal.

@newtech12 @Keaze_ @fobbs69 Those consoles better come with very large HDDs if the the games have to be completely installed. Metal Gear IV was (50GB?) on ps3. It was filling the whole Blu-Ray disc.

Yes you can connect an external HDD, but I don't want to have to pay 150$ on a 3.0 HDD when the consoles are already going to be 600$ (does that even include the MANDATORY kinect?)

@newtech12 @Keaze_ @fobbs69 What's the point of this when you already had to register your copy of the game when you first installed? Why the checks? It's supposed to be linked directly with your X-Box Live account, right? Or does your XBL not exist on the console and is instead on Microsoft's cloud? Not good...

That means if Microsoft's servers go down, or they get hacked, your shiny new next-gen console becomes a $500 paperweight.
