Xbox One Exec: We're Doing Things That "Can't Be Done" on PS4

"We've really got a lot more going on [than our competitors]."

According to Xbox executive Kudo Tsunoda, the Xbox One has "a lot more going on" than the PlayStation 4 and other competing platforms. In a new interview, Tsunoda talks about how Xbox One features like backwards compatibility, as well as cross-play and cross-buy with PC, give the Xbox One the upper hand.

No Caption Provided

"For a long time we've had PC gamers and console gamers who weren't really able to play together," Tsunoda told GameIndustry International. "That's why cross-play is still such a powerful idea. You should be able to play what you love, and play together, regardless of what device you're playing on. It's about connecting people."

"It's a really unique value that only we can offer," he added. "You still need very gamer-focused values, but there's lots of things you can do with our technology. We've really got a lot more going on [than our competitors]. We're doing things that can't be done on any other console."

Tsunoda went on to say that allowing people to play games "wherever they want, on whatever device they choose, and making that easy" is Microsoft's long-term goal for the overall Xbox ecosystem.

On the subject of backwards compatibility specifically, Tsunoda said he's happy to deliver a feature that fans have been clamoring for.

"With backwards compatibility, it isn't something that we just think gamers might want," Tsunoda explained. "We know. We're looking for and soliciting that feedback. It was the number one most requested feature for Xbox One by far."

For its part, Sony has said it has no plans to bring backwards compatibility to PS4.

Not only does the Xbox One have features and functionality that can't be found or delivered on competing platforms, but the console has a bigger lineup of exclusives than anyone else, Tsunoda said. "We've got a lot more exclusive games than any other platform," he stated.

Some of Microsoft's biggest upcoming Xbox One exclusives for this year include Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fable Legends, and Forza Motorsport 6. Looking into next year and beyond, Microsoft has Quantum Break, Sea of Thieves, Recore, and Inside, among others.

Sony, on the other hand, has admitted that its first-party games lineup for this year is "a little sparse."

Don't own an Xbox One.. I own a PS4. I thought I might never get an X1 but MS are really stepping up their game. Looking at the DX12 benchmarks.. it's probably going to be able to compete performance wise as well just because of better APIs. I'll probably be picking one up sometime soon.

@xboticon: There are devs saying that it will make a difference on the Xbox One. We don't know exactly how much yet but I'm pretty sure it'll make some kind of improvement. That is really all the Xbox One needs to match the PS4 because the PS4 is only slightly more powerful. If DX12 enables developers to hit the same framerate and resolution as all PS4 games then it's done its job. Seeing as how many already equal or come close I don't think it is very far fetched.

I'm still amazed at how bad MS flunked the debut of this console. it is clearly a better choice gaming wise, but it will be trounced by PS4 because it already is outsold at a rate of 4 to 1. since most people buy mainly multiplatform games nowaday, it's pretty much over. the fact that devs can deliver a little more performance on the PS4 today makes it even harder for MS.

@MigGui: I agree, 3rd party titles performance on PS4 is brutally damaging the X1. Unfortunately if MS does not realize that, and they keep sticking their heads in the sand preaching about their exclusives (which are awesome and am looking forward for some of them) they will have a good beating throughout this generation.

I own an X1 exclusively and now i understand why ppl used to say that MS is not in touch with the fans, nowadays gamers are techies, they look for performance. They learned the wrong things from Nintendo, they should have understood that exclusives on a weaker system don't sell, otherwise Nintendo wouldn't be in so much trouble, but it seems they didn't get that.

Phil Spencer's dream is to be like Nintendo, if he doesn't up the performance of the xbox, it will be in the same hole as the Nintendo

@wannorious: I felt for the "technical specs" and I had to try the ps4 to see if the so called advantages made a huge difference for me to move on from my preferred controller for the better visuals. Well, Beyond the unnoticeable 900p vs 1080p resolution differences I dont see how multiplats perform better on the ps4. I believe that you are still stuck in the past with the initial released games on the XB1 and ps4. The latest games that come to my mind like the withcher 3 have better fps on the XB1 due to the dynamic resolution. The games I tried on both consoles are MGSGZ, Advanced Warfare, and the Witcher 3.

MS is more in touch with the fans than Sony for sure due to the beating rhe XB1 has gotten by the PS4 in terms of sales. They have added requested features like BC and are focusing a lot on Firt Party games while admitting that their support for thrid party will remain as it is important. They had been acused of buying third party franchises and now they are acused of pulling a nintendo which it is funny to read. Nintendo only has Mario this and Mario that, while the XBox has a good variety of games from racing to shooters.

Lastly, trying to come up with missinformed comments to support your console of choice is a little silly. Instead you should be demanding more first party from Sony to make the Ps4 even better. The sales are no benefit to you, but only to Sony.

As of now the XBox is improving on all cathegories from its initial lauch, and its sales are better than the 360 at this point in time just not as great as the ps4.

@heavengirl15: Well i don't have a PS4 i have only and X1 so i don't really care what exclusives Sony is releasing.

As for performance, apparently 900p vs 1080p is all that is taking for Sony to beat MS in sales and popularity, the thing is that 1080p is the tipping point, this is when you get to full HD, when xbox games are still running sub full HD and that is not good for marketing, maybe you don't see the difference, some ppl do, i can tell when a game is full HD or not on my 55" Tv.

Frankly speaking, some games have better fps on X1 than ps4, but those games are running at 900p vs 1080p so a bit of sacrifice for a full HD, but some games have better resolution and better fps on Ps4 such as project cars, so really we'd better give up this argument that the difference in performance is minor, it really isn't there is a good performance gap (at least so far) and we have to live with it and stop pretending that it is barely noticeable.

As for your argument about looking at older games, this is not true, Batman is 900p, MGS5 releasing at 900p, witcher 3 most of the times running at 900p only cut-scenes are at 1080p

MS targeted 900p by design as it seems i remember one of the execs said that this is their sweet spot, i personally think that this strategy is fucked up. They recently got in touch with their fan base and this is due to the ass whipping sony gave them.

As for Nintendo, seems you are misinformed as they strive on their first party lineup, check Xbox head previous statements on how much he admires Nintendo and their first party lineup

@wannorious: No doubt, the 1080p marketing has worked in Sony's favor, and it will get give Sony the win this generation. However, if you truly have an xbox one only you should feel happy that you are getting good deals, better online stability, more features ( even if you dont use them all), and more first party support. I game on the XB1 more because of the controller and online stability. I have a ps4 and I played my favorite game of all in the last of us, but for multiplats I play them on the XB1.

If you feel jealous of the 1080p diplay of the PS4 then you should sell your XB1 and get a PS4, it is as simple as that. I personally will not sacrifice the controller that gives me the better experience for an increase in resolution that I cannot even notice not even on my 65 inch HD TV. If you can then I envy your eye sight and feel sorry for you at the same time for being force to game on a console that gives you less pixels. It is reported that battlefrint will be 900p on the ps4, will that make you skip that game?

Also dont forget that more games start to hit 1080p on the XB1 if that is what you care for. Forza 6, PES16 come to my mind. You may google for more in case that resolution is god to you.

Now, moving on to the XBOx boss, he admires nintendo and congratulates Sony on its ps4 sales..that does not mean anything for what the XBox will be delivering in terms of games, and features. And if you "truly" have an XB1 only you should feel happy that the XB1 is lagging in sales behind the ps4 because it is adding more trying to catch up.

@heavengirl15: why did you turn this personal lol. My first statement was about how MS and Xbox are performing, wasn't a personal shot against anyone, it was a statement of my opinion. I have no reason to lie about which console i have, if you read my comments carefully you'll realize that i am not bashing any of the consoles, just stating facts and opinion.

Believe it or not, there are gamers who are mature, that they state the good and the bad about their console, we don't need to be all brainwashed to blindly defend our console of choice for no obvious reasons. I chose xbox1 no one forced me, and i can buy a ps4 without needing to sell my xbox but i am just not interested, but at the same time i will not deny Sony engineers the success they are having, cause they did a great job, and you can't expect Sony fans not to be happy or brag about the positives of their system, just like you brag about yours.

@wannorious: Sorry if you felt attacked. I dont take this discussions that serious about sharing different points of view. My replies have been respectful, and no insults have been involved to make it personal.

If you read carefully you will see that I am not putting down any particular console just stating why I prefer one over the other in terms of my personal experience. I own the ps4 as well, but it does not offer me the same gaming experience beyong the 1080p. That does not mean it is a bad console, it is just my personal experience, and i use it strictly for the exclusives that appeal to my taste.

Being a mature gamer is accepting the good and bad of what the system we use can give us. Again, if you read CAREFULLY from my first reply I STATED the OBVIOUS reason why I prefer the xb1 over the ps4.

The reason I suggested for you to trade your xb1 for the ps4 it's because you seem to make a big deal about the 1080p and you claim to actually notice the pixel difference over the 900p. So why stick to the less visually appealing console? Or if you found that offensive then you can simply get a ps4 and keep your xb1 and experience the best of both worlds. Or what made you choose the XB1 over the ps4 in the first place, when the ps4 games perform better? We all knew full well that he ps4 had better specs than the XB1 fron the beginning.

@heavengirl15: the thing is, the market is not really tech-heavy. iphones sell like water in the desert even though their hardware specs are abysmal. I actually think PS4 is outselling X1 by this large margin due to bad launch marketing. people buy games to play online with their friends, and all their friends have PS4s, so they'll get PS4s too. and this started with the unsuccessful launch of the X1, with the $100 higher pricetag, always-online thing and proprietary DRM checking you every ten minutes. if MS marketed the one better at launch, enhancing its features instead of downplaying them, it would be in a better spot even with 900p.

@MigGui: I agree that MS shot themselves in the foot. That will cost them to lose this generation as I dont see how they will be able to match the sales of the PS4. However, the sales of the XB1 are good enough to keep MS investing on it and the conpetition going that ultimately benefits the consumer.

PS4 has had cross play for a while now in quite a few games. Did he not get that memo or something?

Backwards compatibility is a great concept at this point and it's obviously working in some capacity, but it's definitely not working perfectly either. I'll reserve judgment on it until I see how it works at release and what games are available. It's also releasing far too late to have a huge impact on the market this far into the generation imo. It's cool they're adding it and it obviously adds value to their console, but the value is less than it would have been when the Xbox One released. It's not the game changer it could have been.

You have more exclusives for this year. Sony has a lot more exclusives announced for next year and beyond. So that's not a very wise statement to make, but that's never stopped PR I guess. Granted they have a great end of the year planned, but people don't just buy consoles for what they can play right now.

If there's one thing MS is good at it's generating hype and making promises, and then under delivering on said promises. Less talk, more action MS.

WOW, more than 24 hours and still this article is one of the top most articles on Gamespot. Ridiculous. And we have fan boys continue to rip each other to shreds while there are real world issues to deal with. I know many people have already said this, but how hard is it to respect others' gaming choices and simply move on ? The M$ exec can say whatever he wants to. That's why he is paid a 6 figure salary and we are not. Obviously, he cannot come out and say "the Xb1 sucks.. PS is way better", '"our sales are poor"', blah blah blah. No point in fighting among each other guys. Just pick your platform and enjoy ! Even better if you can afford to game on all 3 major platforms. Peace.

@starjay009: I honestly couldn't agree more. It's almost every article on this website has a comments section that seems to gradually transcend into a noisy playground, full of whiney kids arguing and bickering over whose console is best. If only they had the intelligence to see how pathetic they behave.

Remember when the internet was a place for intelligent, open discussion? No, nor do I. Shame really. It has so much potential. But like many things in life, it's ruined by bloody kids!

mircosoft did everything in it's power to give up the number 1 spot prior to this gen so it's good to see them realizing the fault of their ways & trying to mount a comeback.

sony hasn't had a good system since PS1 (& although i didn't like the system (PS2) it arguably has the greatest library in videogame history so that can't be ignored) so it is disheartening to say the least to see so many fools flock to their obvious gimmicks.

every once in a blue moon i boot up my n64 to play either micromachines or goldeneye (when i am drunk and with company / due to nostalgic reasons), other than that i rarely play games of the last generation or any generation before that, so backwards compatibility is pretty useless, of course, imho... :)

PC vs console has been done several times and scrapped because PC gamers win 10 times out of 10. Bad idea... unless PC users are forced to use the controller (but hacks/cheats will change things). And doesn't Rocket League have PC vs PS4?

IIRC Sony did try a PC vs console game back on PS3 I forget which one it was.

@TeknoBug: There's a number of games that have cross-play functionality on the PS4. Final Fantasy XIV for instance. MMOs in general usually have it. MOBAs probably will as well. I'm not sure why Kudo is trying to pretend that they're the console that offers cross play functionality, especially since one of the criticisms against Microsoft was that they wouldn't offer cross play functionality to developers like Sony did with the PS4. Makes no sense. And it's blatantly false. Shame on him.

@TeknoBug: Microsoft did it too in the X360 era.
But these games are only exceptions from the norm.
What MS wants to make now is to make crossplay an important factor for all devices featuring Win10.

@gamermonkey_: PSNOW is not the same as BC by the way. It is more of a rental service. If you own a game, you still have to pay PSNow if you would like to play that game through PSnow(for example if you don't own the PS3 anymore).

BC on XOne lets you play games you already have from the 360(if they are added to the BC list that is) at no extra cost. The 2 features are very different.

@Alucard_Prime: They both have advantages and disadvantages. For instance, PS Now is too expensive, but you can play any of 200 games so long as you have a subscription and a decent internet service. Xbox One backwards compatibility is free, but requires the game and seems to run a few frames per second slower than the games did on the Xbox 360. Take the good with the bad. I wouldn't say either is better than the other. Xbox One backwards compatibility obviously needs more games and to fix the performance issues, and PS Now needs a price change. Fix those things and they'll both be fine.

it doesnt change the fact that bc is already on ps4 first, which make xbox exec commentary seems stupid to say that they are doing something ps4 cant do, or saying more things happening on xbox

@TeknoBug: lolwhat?

Ps4 can't emulate ps3.. period... even top of the line rigs have enough trouble trying to emulate its bios.

You know how psnow works don't you? Those massive server farms made of ps3 hardware once used to creat cg movies in the film industry were repurposed to run games for psnow, and then streamed with the global node networking of gaikai+psn. No emulation, ps3 hardware playing ps3 games.
