Xbox One Exec: We're Doing Things That "Can't Be Done" on PS4

"We've really got a lot more going on [than our competitors]."

According to Xbox executive Kudo Tsunoda, the Xbox One has "a lot more going on" than the PlayStation 4 and other competing platforms. In a new interview, Tsunoda talks about how Xbox One features like backwards compatibility, as well as cross-play and cross-buy with PC, give the Xbox One the upper hand.

No Caption Provided

"For a long time we've had PC gamers and console gamers who weren't really able to play together," Tsunoda told GameIndustry International. "That's why cross-play is still such a powerful idea. You should be able to play what you love, and play together, regardless of what device you're playing on. It's about connecting people."

"It's a really unique value that only we can offer," he added. "You still need very gamer-focused values, but there's lots of things you can do with our technology. We've really got a lot more going on [than our competitors]. We're doing things that can't be done on any other console."

Tsunoda went on to say that allowing people to play games "wherever they want, on whatever device they choose, and making that easy" is Microsoft's long-term goal for the overall Xbox ecosystem.

On the subject of backwards compatibility specifically, Tsunoda said he's happy to deliver a feature that fans have been clamoring for.

"With backwards compatibility, it isn't something that we just think gamers might want," Tsunoda explained. "We know. We're looking for and soliciting that feedback. It was the number one most requested feature for Xbox One by far."

For its part, Sony has said it has no plans to bring backwards compatibility to PS4.

Not only does the Xbox One have features and functionality that can't be found or delivered on competing platforms, but the console has a bigger lineup of exclusives than anyone else, Tsunoda said. "We've got a lot more exclusive games than any other platform," he stated.

Some of Microsoft's biggest upcoming Xbox One exclusives for this year include Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fable Legends, and Forza Motorsport 6. Looking into next year and beyond, Microsoft has Quantum Break, Sea of Thieves, Recore, and Inside, among others.

Sony, on the other hand, has admitted that its first-party games lineup for this year is "a little sparse."

"Microsoft's biggest upcoming Xbox One exclusives for this year include Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fable Legends, and Forza Motorsport 6."

So a remaster, a Timed exclusive that will be multiplat, another Fable game that will also be on PC and Forza 6 which will wreck everything in the racing genre, and HALO... WOW so many exclusives from them. All of them are rehashes. Sony has 4 new IP's this year, all ps4 exclusive - The order 1886, Bloodborne, Everybody is gone to the Rapture and Until Dawn, plus remasters for Journey, Uncharted collection, God of War 3. And people still say PS4 line-up for this year was weak? Only reason for that is because they don't have any BIG IP's to be released in the final part of the year aside from Uncharted remaster. XBOX doesn't have exclusives, it has shared exclusives with the PC. Oh and i forgot about The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, PC and PS4 only, by this guys' logic we can also consider that a PS4 exclusive.

@bicepsul: god of war 3 is a simple port of a not so old game , journey is a simple port. Of a not old game ,uncharted collection is a simple collection of ports of games that are not old and Sony took out many of the features like ummm online ,the order was pure trash, until dawn is a port of a ps3. Move cob roles point and click adventure, everyone has gone to the rapture is a little cheap indie game that has big frame rate problems . the games Xbox has are all AAA games gears is a full remake. That also comes with all 4 gears games , and halo is a monster , forza , tomb raider!!! Dude who cares about the port station 4. At the moment

@emptycow718: There are plenty of people who like remasters. Very few people played Uncharted online for any extended period of time. Until Dawn is not a port of a PS3 game. It may have started development as a PS3 game, but that doesn't make it a port. It's been a PS4 game for some time now. Don't be ridiculous with your fanboy nonsense. Everyone Has Gone to the Rapture is considered to be a great game by many people. The PS4 has plenty of great exclusives coming in the next year or so. Stop being ridiculous. Both consoles are fine. Though to be fair I didn't see the fanboy nonsense posted by the guy you replied to. Ugh. People are annoying. Regardless, don't make the situation worse with your fanboy reply.

@bicepsul: It's actually quite common to talk about console exclusivity in this fashion, even if it's coming to PC because many console gamers aren't PC gamers. It is true that MS doesn't have many more exclusives on hand. Backwards compatibility will be a big selling point. Quantum Break, Fable legends, Scalebound, are all new(ish) IP, and Halo, Forza, Crackdown and Gears of War are really good franchises. All of which are releasing between now and end of 2016. Sony's exclusive lineup from now to then is bleak by comparison. However, it's only 4 games short. Sony is probably having to use some of the cash from the PS4 to write off other losses from other departments to appease Shareholders, but should come back strong end of 2016 and all of 2017. So, don't worry, you still have an amazing system. Depending on taste, though, you can't possibly argue that the Xbox One isn't either.

@consolehaven: Between now and the end of 2016 Sony have Until Dawn, Tearaway Unfolded, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, No Man's Sky, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Ratchet & Clank, Dreams, Street Fighter V, Gran Turismo 7, Hellblade, The Last Guardian, and Horizon: Zero Dawn.

There's also the possibility that the unannounced exclusives from the likes of Quantic Dream, Level -5, Sony Santa Monica (God of War IV) and Sony Bend could be revealed this year at Paris Games Week or PlayStation Experience and released during 2016.

It's also rumoured that Crash Bandicoot is returning next year as Sony have bought back the IP.

Edit: Oh, and they've also got Project Morpheus coming next year with games like R.I.G.S. and The London Heist.

He works for MS,he will of course say that MS has the best games.
Do you really think he would say Sony or Nintendo has better games?

@sladakrobot: you can't read man... you really can't.. that was not his quote, that is seen over the internet a lot. And yes it is fear, fear of everyone succumbing to stupidity. Stating a console has a poor line-up, when it clearly doesn't, is kinda dumb when you praise another for recylcing old shit and wrapping it in a new package as "the next best thing". there are lots of articles stating that ps4 exclusive this year is poor, as in number of games, while xbox's is better. I just put out the games available for each. They are facts not products of imagination.

@bicepsul: You just dont get it.
He is an employe who works for MS.
Of course he will say that MS has the best line up of games.
Sony will say the same as well as Nintendo.
He is not a normal gamer who says remasters on one plattform are better then remaster on a another.

Breaking news...an employe who works for Ford said that Ford makes the best cars...wow.

Sony statement:
"Our first party lineup is a little sparse this year, so I think this places even greater emphasis on getting good third party support," House said."
So,if Sony itself says this, why claim otherwise?

@sladakrobot: because they always seek improvement, even in the lead.

List them all, side by side, anx look st that without bias, suddenly you will realise their list is much longer than xbox... h5 will move some consoles, but it takes more than 2 ip's to gain ground.

This article is a joke. Most of the sh*t he mentioned are already on ps4 before (more like ripped off feature from playstation). and he called those "cant be done on ps4", he also called those thing as "more things that going on than in ps4".

M$, xbox, and its exec are like clowns.

@RenegadesXG: While I'm disappointed at the lack of 5GHz wifi, the wifi isn't that bad on the PS4, I can DL a game at ~2.5-3MB/s which is what my modem is allowing me (~28Mbit). However I'm living in an apartment building and the 2.4GHz channels are crammed but I worked around that by reducing the wifi power on my modem.

@RenegadesXG: A Wi-Fi connection isn't a good way to justify if a system is better or not. There are many more arguments than that.

However I do prefer the Xbox One over PS4, but I think its just a matter of taste in games and also I like the extra entertainment features on Xbox One. I only play my PS4 for the exclusives but there hasn't been much lately that I've wanted to play.

@Scruffin_it: Is the WI-FI truly that bad? It took my friend 22 extra minutes to download Assassin's Creed IV on the XBOX One then mine did on the PS4 and we have the same bandwidth speed, internet company and the same city. We wanted to conduct our own tests to see the outcomes and everytime the PS4 came out on top.

@MAXTHUNDER99: Sorry I edited my post, I meant "isn't" a good way to say a system is good or not. However the Wi-Fi is pretty terrible for online play (could be the server though) and downloading. Though doesn't seem to affect streaming Netflix that much.

1.) It's Kudo Tsunoda. He wears sunglasses inside.
2.) He's got me on BC. But it's also a very low regarded feature. Real gamers don't get rid of old systems.
3.) Cross-play, cross-buy and cross-compatibility with PC? And? Playstation culture has been privy to this for a while, between the PS3, PS4, and Vita, with PC added for upcoming titles.
4.) Don't ask to see the bottom of his shoe.

@Zombrex: "Real gamers don't get rid of old systems."

Tell that to the people that don't have a lot of money and need to sell what they have to get the next best thing. They are just as "Real" of gamers as the rest of them. I for one had to trade my old Colecovision for NES and that pissed me off but that was the only way I could upgrade back then.

@Scruffin_it: That's true of some people, but the feature isn't as necessary as you're trying to pretend. It's convenient more than anything. Regardless, it's a nice feature to have. That being said, Kudo is being ridiculous with this PR nonsense. PS4 has had cross play functionality since release. He's blatantly lying here. Or for some reason he's just really THAT ignorant about his competitor even though he's a high ranking executive at Xbox. I can't believe that though. He's just a liar. Shame on him.

@Zombrex: dude. I'm 30. Great job. Not married. Gf only. And no kids. I'm a real gamer. And my sh$@ was gone to ganestop when they took half off my next gen purchases on both systems for old models. Waiting very patiently on bc. Problem was it was announced so late my collection was almost traded and a lot of peoples are. They won't buy back. Unless they're lucky fools like me it's a done deal. Then you've got activision holding approx fifty percent of all games you wouldn't mind to play again hostage. That's 50 percent cut right there for your typical gamer. Someone should sue for property rights. I would like to see some good old fashioned property ownership clauses take fat shats all over their digital fiefdom in a court of law. See those frowns go right side up. Still trying to figure out bc someone wants to support your data format. You're allowed to decline. What about my purchase giving me INDEFINATE rights to use property. What contract did I sign to change that to a rental? The idea seems to be, well you're on a new system. Yep. And if I went out a bought a new DVD player today, DVDs I own are going to be expected to work on it. Just want to see a judge take away all newfound creativity in a digital environment.

See I own both as well. And I went from being the 360 arguement closer last gen, to a ps4 fan this gen. Why? Exclusives? Hardware slightly better? Controller better as well? No to all of that. It simply involves the extended warranty plan between the 2. Xbox started last gen for sixty dollars and ps3 didn't have. Large reason why it won last gen and controller. Now. A flip flop has happened. A all damage included 3 yr warranty from ps is fifty dollars. A non all damage warranty for 3 yrs from xbox is $120 dollars now. Not only that but you won't be buying bc they've even hidden that under an inspection clause. So pretty much impossible to get unless aware up front. No one has said why ms? Well I say it. How do you take a warranty plan you started and hide it. If you don't believe me, call ms like I have. And I don't wanna hear about feature. And I don't wanna hear about 50 percent bc to your collection thanks activision. What I want to hear is our warranty plan is fixed at least to what it used to be and can be purchased wo an inspection.

@emptycow718: I've found any gamer is going to need period or start saving for a replacement on either system. What's scary is from a corporate perspective it's called burying your warranty. That usually means warranty was more beneficial to customer than you originally intended for it to be. That 360 warranty saw 2 new 360s on my entertainment center free of charge over the consoles life span. I want some sort of protection for my even more expensive one. And I don't want it to be an additional 400 in my bank acct.

Hypocrite. Sony used to push for cross platform play but MS always nixed it. In fact some existing PS3 and upcoming PS4 games (SF V) do have cross platform play with PC. Hell, Sony even wanted cross platform play between the PlayStation and Xbox. Now MS are bragging about PC cross play?

@nothingformoney: In short ITS BUSINESS. I laugh every time people think these copanies really care about us. Honestly tho MS has proved to be more "for the gamers" this gen. Almost every update done to the xbox one has been from customer ideas and feedback. But at the end of the day its all about the $$..
