Xbox One contains non-replaceable hard drive

Microsoft has confirmed the Xbox One's internal hard drive will not be interchangeable; USB 3.0 allows for users to plug in external hard drives for additional storage.

The Xbox One console will contain a non-replaceable 500GB hard drive, Microsoft has confirmed in an interview with Engadget.

No Caption Provided

Microsoft's senior director of product planning, Albert Penello, confirmed that the console would contain an internal 500GB hard drive that cannot be upgraded.

By comparison, the Xbox 360 console offered hard drives with varying degrees of capacity and allowed users to replace the hard drive.

If users wish to expand the Xbox One's storage, a USB 3.0 port is available to plug in external hard drives. Penello confirmed the external hard drives could be used in the same fashion as internal storage, including abilities such as installing games and storing downloads.

I think people are not using there heads and looking at the whole picture here. Play a game on an external device will make loading time and data transfers slower, yet why do that? Say you buy a game and download it to your hd, you bought it, its now yours, play it, when your done you can transfer it to your external hdd or delete it. If you delet itand want to play later redownload it, from the cloaud, external, or the disk, you can play immediately and not have to wait for it to finish downloading. Another ootion, which is the same really is to put your older games to external and current to internal, when your done transder it off your internal until you need it again, this way you can always play games from internal hdd and us external or cloud to keep your luggage until you need it.

MS makes the mistake that people will figure out these things themselves and doesnt dumb it down for the average person. Keep the current games you are play on the 500g hdd, put the rest on external or cloud. Then transfer back to internal when you want to play it again. Put all non game data on cloud and/or external. This way every game you own can be played locally, whether you own a disk or bought it online. If you bought it online you can download it again a 100 times without having to buy it again. You dont have to wait for it to redownload to play it, though how that works if your in the middle of the game idk. Problem solved, and hope I helped aleave some peoples dismay over this issue, it hade me going there for a little while, was like shit, shouldni cancel and get a ps4 lol

Nice! I wish any external harddrive can work without the need to format the entire drive.

I was expecting this. Especially considering that single-layer Blu-rays can hold up to 50GB of data (and most current-gen PS3 games use about 25GB). That 500GB is going to fill up real quick. Mandatory installs was a bad move.

Here is where it begins. $20 difference between 500Gb and 1Tb, and microsoft starts cutting. Noone thinks of the data transfer speed and how HD movies need more then USB3 can transfer. So we start the issues on more space. Save games, movies, TV shows. Space goes quickly, external drives lack speed, at times performance and need additional powerpoints. In stead of opting for an upgrade drive for intense users (not saying that MS should just supply it). This is only the first of many issuesto come, whilst Microsoft arranges party lines with its marketing to spin answers. A not so fine beginning Microsoft!

@Lawrencevanrijn more then usb 3 can transfer? you do realize that usb3 is capable of 5gbps right? thats 640mb/sec. even 4k uses less then 100 in most cases. its much more dependent on the drive then the cable. harddisks normally max out at around 40~60mb/sec. but Solidstates can go upwards of 500mb/sec. so even bluray is capable of playing on an harddisk. but for 4k movies you will need a solidstate unless the new 4k codecs are amazing.

On the plus side any USB hard drive will hook up to it to expand it so it's not like they aren't giving you a legit way to boost the storage.

Microsoft again learning the wrong things from Apple. Taking their approach to designing CONSUMER appliances to a product designed primarily for consumption by a tech savvy, freedom loving gaming crowd is completely assinine. And this on a system where game installation is mandatory.

If I had to do all that, why wouldn't I just get a high-end PC with a huge hard drive instead. I'm sure next-gen games are going to be super easy to port, considering the nature of both the PS4 and XBox hardware.

Too much BS in these past few days from Microsoft.

Lol, that 500 Gb harddrive first of all loses space to house the software running the device (as stated on their website) AND is also used for all other media functions (pause live tv and other recording functions for instance). No way that leaves space for 30 bluray games that need to be fully installed. What a piece of junk !

So can we add on any external hard drive we want, or will we be forced to buy one made exclusively for the X-Box One? Something tells me that this will be anything but convenient, especially for my wallet.

Seriously, 500 gig isn't that much by modern standards. Imagine what it will be like five years from now?

@JRLennis Good call man and a question that I think needs to be answered. Will MS allow the purchase of any external device or will it have to be an MS-exclusive accessory.

I have never tried to replace a hard drive. I am so technologically incompetent I would probably screw something up. On top of that, I am too lazy to even attempt it. Anyway this is total BS and I don't know why MS would think it's not. So from what I take is if your HD fills up you will basically need what amounts to a memory card in order to save what you already have. If that is correct, then this is BS.

In the PS3 all you need is a screwdriver and 5 minutes of time.

You pop open the HDD slot. Unscrew 1 screw. Pull out the old HDD. Unscrew it from the support (4 screws). Pull the old HDD out of the container and replace with new HDD. Secure screws back onto container and slide back in. Secure screw. Pop back on side. Restart Ps3. Update firmware. Done.

If you can make a Banquet meal in the microwave, you should be able to do this.

What no one is talking about is how an external hard drive has worse performance than an internal hard drive. Anything installed on an external hd will load slower than the internal. This includes games...so once you max out your internal, get ready for longer load times. This is a performance compromise and totally unacceptable when you consider how cheap internal hard drives are.

Come on Microsoft, you're a COMPUTER company! The Xbox one is the first system where it's performance decreases once you max out your hard drive...welcome to next gen!

@NoLimitJay1 Dude USB3 is alot faster than the current gens HDD speeds. Whether or not they implement SATA III in their new systems or not, you will still barely notice the difference.

Just reading those comments is giving me headaches. The words are there for something, READ THEM! Goddammit, they just said an external Hard Drive will work just fine, those things ships at 500 GB MINIMUM the biggest I've seen was 5 TB, a full game is around 5 GB, good luck on filling that up (5 TB is around 5000 GB for those who just dont know how these fancy interweb stuff works)

Current gen games on Xbox 360 range from 5 to 8 GB. With most content on disc being formatted for 720p output.

Xbox One games will be anywhere from 5-50GB with most probably falling somewhere around 20GB. This is why they added Blu-ray.

The hard drive will fill up fast.

@Akijo Your lack of comprehension is giving us a headache. It's a performance issue. Longer Loading times, etc. READ. UNDERSTAND. COMPREHEND. You seem to be ignoring the jist of what people are saying just so you can feel right.

Fail. So for more space, people will have to have usb drives stacked all over their already ugly Bland Box One? HA!

My PS3 came with an 80gb, and I quickly upgraded to a 500gb. Some have even fit 750gb, and 1tb drives into their console.

Are you guys TRYING TO LOSE? Because, honestly, it looks like you handed the victory to Sony already.

@DrKill09 Every heard of External hard drive? Those things uses USB 3.0, that means they are leaving to you the freedom of how many space you want considering an External Hard Drive can store a ton of data (I have one at 1 Tbytes at home and it's one of the smallest)

@Akijo @DrKill09

Did you read the part in where they said it DOES NOT work as internal storage though? That renders an external drive useless on the system for the most part.

Not to mention external drives are and always have been much much slower in read and write times vs. a direct connect internal hard drive that doesn't have to go through a bus. Even if it does support usb 3.0 it will still be slower than a sata internal drive by a wide margin.

Then you have to factor in that external drives are more expensive than internal drives.

@Akijo @DrKill09 That is what I was talking about. USB Hard drives. Plugged in. and stacked all over the console. What? You thought I meant thumb drives? HA!

I have a USB hard drive plugged into my pc at all times that I keep drivers and programs on for whenever I have to wipe Windows, and do a fresh install.

So, again, thank you for not reading my comment properly.

@Akijo @s_h_a_d_o You sir, are a dumbass. External hard drives are okay, but the 360 only had two, maybe three usb ports. I forget, as it has been 5 years since I had one.

Fill up all your ports with charge cables and hard drives, and you are screwed. Same problem the Wii had. I had to take up a slot just so I could connect to my (at the time) wired network.

Replaceable hard drives, on the other hand, give the user more flexibility. Some prefer SSD's to hard drives.

They just said that you can use an external HD just fine with the system. What is with you people...do you even read??

"Penello confirmed the external hard drives could be used in the same fashion as internal storage, including abiltiies such as installing games and storing downloads."

My main concern with this is the included HD size. A single, maxed out Blu-Ray game is mighty big. So basically we will be able to install, tops, say, 40-60 games?
