Xbox Live coming to Windows phones

Xbox Live friends lists, avatars, and games soon to be accessible from Windows mobile phones; cross-platform multiplayer across Windows Phone 7, Xbox 360 and PC will be possible.

Today at Barcelona's Mobile World Congress show, Microsoft announced that it is set to bring Xbox Live to the Windows Phone 7 Series operating system. This means that Xbox Live account holders will be able to view their friends lists, gamerscore, and avatars using compatible mobile devices, as well as download games to play online.

Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7.
Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7.

As outlined in Bill Gates' "Live anywhere" speech at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2006, games developed for Windows Phone 7 Series devices can support achievements and multiplayer gameplay, allowing Windows Phone 7, Xbox 360, and PC users to compete against each other. Microsoft is enforcing a minimum specification for new devices built on the platform, indicating that they will sport accelerometers, high resolution, and four-point multi-touch screens.

In an interview with GameSpot's sister site News.com, Microsoft senior vice president of Mobile Communications Andy Lees detailed how multiplatform gaming will work.

"So let's say that we were playing Scrabble or something. I'm not sure if we should use that trademark, but just as an idea. If I wanted to play against you, then you want to get a notification on your [Xbox] Live tile that, hey, someone has invited you to play a game. And then I go into the gaming Xbox Live hub, and I see that you've invited me to a game of Scrabble, or in the middle of a game of Scrabble, and it's my turn. I take my turn, and then you take your turn, and you can take your turn on a PC, or you can take your turn on a phone. So Xbox Live is coordinating all of that--coordinates your achievements, has your avatar across screens, and enables you to have multi-screen, multi-user play, particularly focused on turn by turn. Synchronized game play is one thing, but given that people spend less time, really, turn-by-turn is, we think, an important element as well."

The new home screen.
The new home screen.

Xbox Live will form one part of the Windows Phone 7 Series platform, which will also feature a brand new tile-based user interface. The new user interface is based on six hubs; people, pictures, music, office, marketplace, and games. Each hub will pull in data from sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Windows Live, integrating the information from multiple different sources. Zune users will also be able to use their existing accounts to download music and videos. Devices based on Windows Phone 7 Series are set to be made available in the fourth quarter of 2010.

@Ladiesman17 yea um? an unproven OS system against a proven one? Whether or not Windows OS has problems Millions of people use it. MAC is dead in my books and cannot deliver to those who are really into gaming. Say what you want on your bias post, Windows will still come out on top whether you like it or not....And that is a fact. I am not being a Microsoft dog humper but statistics and sales talk louder than words.

I get it now! Microsoft wants to kill pc so you have to buy the RROD xbox 360 5 times. 5 xbox's per person= 5x the sales.

Twitter and Facebook I could care less about. Facebook is boring and as for Twitter, no one cares what you are doing. Sorry people. We just don't care. Get used to it. The new interface looks good though. I'll be curious to see if they actually come out with a Zune Phone. I wouldn't be a bit surprised. I'm pleased with how the announcement went. The new Phone OS exceeds what was expected, at least for me.

TO further give more detail on my post. Shadown run was both on the 360 and PC. Yet both could play online together and PC still played free. Another indication that live has been on PC for a while and that PC online will still be free.

@squidracerX Yep, Microsoft disgusting, I hope they are crushed by the new Google OS, if future Google OS is able to show better performance & support previous games from the PCs, I'll be happy to be leaving Windows OS!! Steve Ballmer SUCKS,, he's using PC as pawn..

TSK TSK @jsarasqueta Online services will still be free. It will just be used to buy DLC and such. on live(xbox live) on the PC has been out for a while, the only new addition is the phone one. I have NO idea why all of you are making a fuss about this when the PC online will still be free. Like I said, Live for the PC has been out for a while and it will still be free. SOOOO many people misunderstand that and it is not even funny. They just look at a title and scream.

I hope this Live home page comes to my PC, then I could get twitter and facebook on my PC! (sarcasm) This article is totally about phones, not anything good for PC.... They want all of them to play the game so it has to be low graphics games like Uno, and Scrabble, its not going to mean Halo 3 is coming to the PC to play verses Xbox.... They mention very little about the PC at all in fact, its all about bringing windows 7 phone this Live app....

@ACEGamer89 it WAS the next logical step YEARS AGO, Games for Windows Live is horrible, Microsoft doesn't care about it, they let go most of the staff years ago, and they already promised this system YEARS ago, remember back when Shadowrun came out!? A whole 4 games were supported. Notice this guy used Scrabble, not Halo as an example! So yes the cruddy Games for Windows Live is free now, but if they really wanted to make it the same on both platforms they would start charging (go do a search on the original games for windows live, they wanted to charge for that the same as Live on xbox and I believe they DID for a very short while until they realized it sucked and PC gamers are used to free service, so they scrapped that and Games for Windows went down the obsolete toilet). If it fixes games for windows that's awesome, but they gave no impression here that it will.

Yeah this isn't big news... This is hot air. This is just to make you want one of their phones. Microsoft would have killed PC gaming with "Games for Windows" if it wasn't for Blizzard and Valve keeping PC gaming afloat. Steam should be the go to now-a-days, but Microsoft can't let it go. This at least might be an update to the BROKEN Games for Windows Live system... But its too little too late. They make it sound like PC and Xbox will be the same now, but we all know they only support xbox with games currently, and they already tried this and like 4 crappy games (shadowrun barf) worked on both; heck Fable 2, Halo 3, Halo ODST, Gears 2, Crackdown etc.. aren't even out for PC at all much less open for cross play.....

Can we just take moment to point out that the live service in games for windows live is...oh really? Free? Yeah, yeah it is. Please THINK before posting. I suppose that might be too much to ask. Really though? There is absolutely nothing negative about making a unified presence across multiple devices. In fact, its the next logical step. Your inane comments just make you look shallow.

This is definitivly thinking outside the box, the question is how many owners of pc who are used to plays online for free are willing to pay xbox live.

Unlocking achievements in tetris while on the go could be a ton of fun. I really don't see how people are complaining about this. More live integration is only a good thing.

What's the point? Windows phones are barely going anywhere. I don't see how it will pay off for Microsoft. Just seems like a waste of money. Though PC vs. 360 would be great to look forward to (again). I don't know why they didn't keep at it after the very few games that featured it (Two Worlds, Shadowrun, etc).

As for the pc vs 360 things I'm sure it will have an option when you search for games to allow keyboard/mouse controls or not. Like the one in Unreal Tournament 3. So don't get too excited to own console players with your mouse and keyboard controls. Most players aren't going to want to play with someone who has a superior control scheme. More games need to support keyboard/mouse controls for consoles though. Bluetooth keyboard/mouse + console = win.

I think this is a cool idea, but I don't think we need to be that connected to our games. The "home screen" looks like Jeopardy or the opening shot for The Brady Bunch... FAIL. @tyco ex... That would be pretty amazing to have PS3/360 multiplayer games. Can you imagine all the flaming that you'd hear? Pure epicness.

@tyco_ex that actually is a pretty cool idea, and I could see sony allowing microsoft to use their online service but I dont ever see the PS3 fanboys getting on board, or for that matter 360 fanboys. There was a lot of talk about cross platform with PCs and 360s but that would just give an unfair advantage to PC players. If sony and microsoft work together though everyone would benefit from more competition, more resources for better servers, etc. Though lack of competition dulls the product so I dont know whats the better option here. I like the sound of playing against PS3 players though!

if it's not super expensive i might get it, since im due for a new phone this year anyways. I think it sounds like a cool idea idk whats wrong with everyone else on here... especially if it was crossplatform multiplayer like being able to play doom from ur phone with a friend who is playing on xbl but i guess im the only one who likes the sound of the phone :/

I'd be more interested if they would make it to where ps3 and 360 owners could play online together on multi-plat games. Too bad that will never happen.

@ mariokart64fan I would suggest putting that foot in your mouth instead. Just because Wii owners would like an online service on par with Live and PSN doesn't mean they're complainers that now deserved to be charged with an online fee. The Wii's online service is lagging way behind the competition and all Wii owners want is an online experience that's up to date with its competitors. Completely understandable.

mobiles are useless for gaming. even if they dont charge a fee, i doubt many people will use it. plus what chance does the player using a mobile stand against a xbox and pc gamer? actually if its touch screen they might win all the time lol.... plus if its cross-platform multiplayer, i doubt the quality of the mobile version of the game will be 10% of that on xbox and PC and without the same game engine its not fair anyway. i dont think they thought this through. they should learn from sony's mistake.....the aino costs more than a ps3 trying to play games lmfao.

@xRmRxfreakBOMB It'd be more like the Red Screen of Death (or BSOD if you'd prefer). The new home page looks really bland, talk about going a step back in UI design for phones.
