Xbox Live coming to Windows phones

Xbox Live friends lists, avatars, and games soon to be accessible from Windows mobile phones; cross-platform multiplayer across Windows Phone 7, Xbox 360 and PC will be possible.

Today at Barcelona's Mobile World Congress show, Microsoft announced that it is set to bring Xbox Live to the Windows Phone 7 Series operating system. This means that Xbox Live account holders will be able to view their friends lists, gamerscore, and avatars using compatible mobile devices, as well as download games to play online.

Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7.
Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7.

As outlined in Bill Gates' "Live anywhere" speech at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2006, games developed for Windows Phone 7 Series devices can support achievements and multiplayer gameplay, allowing Windows Phone 7, Xbox 360, and PC users to compete against each other. Microsoft is enforcing a minimum specification for new devices built on the platform, indicating that they will sport accelerometers, high resolution, and four-point multi-touch screens.

In an interview with GameSpot's sister site News.com, Microsoft senior vice president of Mobile Communications Andy Lees detailed how multiplatform gaming will work.

"So let's say that we were playing Scrabble or something. I'm not sure if we should use that trademark, but just as an idea. If I wanted to play against you, then you want to get a notification on your [Xbox] Live tile that, hey, someone has invited you to play a game. And then I go into the gaming Xbox Live hub, and I see that you've invited me to a game of Scrabble, or in the middle of a game of Scrabble, and it's my turn. I take my turn, and then you take your turn, and you can take your turn on a PC, or you can take your turn on a phone. So Xbox Live is coordinating all of that--coordinates your achievements, has your avatar across screens, and enables you to have multi-screen, multi-user play, particularly focused on turn by turn. Synchronized game play is one thing, but given that people spend less time, really, turn-by-turn is, we think, an important element as well."

The new home screen.
The new home screen.

Xbox Live will form one part of the Windows Phone 7 Series platform, which will also feature a brand new tile-based user interface. The new user interface is based on six hubs; people, pictures, music, office, marketplace, and games. Each hub will pull in data from sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Windows Live, integrating the information from multiple different sources. Zune users will also be able to use their existing accounts to download music and videos. Devices based on Windows Phone 7 Series are set to be made available in the fourth quarter of 2010.

@abbnormmal The trick is that the computer market has to support a lot more hardware, so few games ever really take advantage of what a computer can really do. Of course, it also has to accomodate the OS and everything. That's the strength of consoles - since its only one set of hardware (practically speaking), they can max it out. Most computer game makers, in order to make money, have to try and support some stuff that's a few years old and less capable. Of course, that is the secret to, say, Blizzard's success. And why Crysis didn't sell as well as Crytek would've hoped (relatively few computers can run Crysis decently, if at all, compared to WOW).

*sniff sniff* I smell hacking in the near future. Seriously. Like the scrabble example, what's going to happen if XBL players can play against PC players in upcoming COD games? Basically any nerd can hack an OS and make the PC click at 1000 RPM+. This is going to be hacking mania, and will be unfair for XBL players.

@xtremeflem2day i agree. i love the fact that the live anywhere is finally... live and all, but if it is a small game, which wont kill my phone, i am okay, im even fine finding my xbox live friends and sending them a message, but i seriously doubt you will be able to play a mobile version of halo... if they did, there is going to be a major overhaul on mobile phones if that happens

@sk8oridie44 Microsoft was talking about it longer, though. I remember chatter of this before 2006 (the idea of Live Anywhere). Of course, the original vision of Live isn't the same as what was delivered. But in all honesty - its too obvious a thing, methinks, so in my mind its more of an inevitability than anything else. If Microsoft didn't look into it, someone else would have. And by someone else, I mean at least a dozen other companies. @Dumfanboys15 The PS3 and 360 are evolving. This is nothing new, just new to consoles. Just sayin'... @BaLLz_ON_FiRE PSN on PC? I'd love to see game developers who are making console/PC games feature cross-platform play. You can do this through Live but very few games ever use this functionality (which is a pity). If I could hook up with my friends, regardless of what platform we're on (PC, PS3, 360), that's a big plus for gamers. It means that the game is more important than the platform, and that's the way things should be! :)

If I'm going to be playing playing my xbox 360 with a controller, against PC gamers who use a mouse (Which has more control), then i'm done with xbox 360 gaming.

ok firstly this is good and i can seriously see myself getting this but the mobile companies in my country will have coughing up money in data charges. another thing "where the hell is the text app?!". it's a good device and you can clearly see microsoft aiming for a synergy of devices. secondly, this PC/Xbox 360 thing is a waist of time, if you are on a budget get a console. if you've got cash to burn go the PC route. with a PC there is always new hardware and you will always feel like you are never really quite 'there'. for example; i got a new HP dv6 laptop with a proper Ati GPU and 4GB of ram, running Crysis i couldn't get passed meduim if i wanted smooth running.a 360 costs $300 and you're never asked to upgrade. a good GPU is $100 but there will always that $600 card. i'm a console man but i dont diss people that can afford a RIG, get over yerselves!

Sony was already talking about integrating the PlayStation Network with other devices, such as PC's... So when Sony announces PSN coming to other devices, don't be whining saying they stole it from Microsoft. Just wanted to share that. Oh and if you want to reply to me, put @sk8oridie44 in the beginning, SO I KNOW YOU'RE TALKING TO ME

@abbnormmal You just agreed with me that the textures are sharper, and it outputs at higher resolution. However, an 8800 is actually capable of playing Crysis. Not at the highest settings, but still capable of it. Most PC games have a minimum system requirements of something much, much lower than an 8800. Unless you're trying to playing Supreme Commander, or Crysis, or Far Cry 2 at 1920 x 1200 with the maximum level of graphic detail, you won't have any trouble playing today's games with an 8800.

Finally! I've been waiting for "Live Anywhere" to finally show up as... well... something. This is looking much better than expected. Don't think its something I would get for myself as my current phone is overkill for my needs/wants (ie, I'm not paying for a phone that requires a data-plan to get the most out of it, regardless of who makes it), but its good to see. Microsoft, at least parts of it, are really trying to improve, which is good to see. More competition is a great thing. From the stories I've read on WP7, they're doing some smart things, and hopefully will do well for themselves. I don't care if this is an iPhone killer or not, but that's me. I just want to be able to go to any carrier and have a large selection of great smart phones to choose from. The more the merrier :)

@abbnormmal "Mouse and Keyboard peripheral? No way never going to happen" PS3 already supports mouse and keyboard, not all games do, but the PS3 does, and there is a controller which is a mouse controller you can use on 360 or PS3 called the fragFX, look it up, its awesome and makes a huge difference in FPS.....

@ISuPrEmAcY32I I don't think people are saying its a BAD thing to have these features, i think most people (like me) are saying its not a big deal, don't get your hopes up for this being awesome, and its just a ploy by MS to sell their phone and apps. But its not bad necessarily, although some people are afraid they will try to make PC GFW Live not free anymore and that would ruin PC gaming forever.

@abbnormmal i agree that in reality games don't look a TON better on PC, but thats only because developers make them speciafically for the 360 most times and are lazy/dont have the resources to make a proper version for PC/PS3. if you look at the improvements in some games for PC like the PC version of DIRT 2, they really DO make some huge improvements. But I also agree that a PC SHOULD look better hands down everytime, its really a games fault if it doesn't use all the tech available, that's why a game made FOR PS3 looks awesome (Uncharted 2), but a junkyard port like Bayonetta runs like crap on PS3 and its not the PS3s fault, its the game. So if you made a version of a game specifically FOR the PC it would look way better than a 360 game just because as you said there is more there. But the reality is junk ports 80% of the time.

@alexkn64, That is the theory of PCs, but not actually the reality. You can spend $1500 on newegg and build a quad-core super computer. Or a $500 budget one. Your games are not going to "look" significantly better that 360 games. Sharper textures, higher resolution sure, but in motion, these things matter much less. In theory, the 8800 Gt I am still using is also many times more powerful than the 360's chip, but it wont run many games that come out for PC/360 these days very well, now will it.

so many haters have to find something to complaing about. Personally I think it's great. I love puzzle games etc and now phones will be able to quickly and easily find people to play with. I also like getting achievements so no complaints on having them on my phone too. I don't see how any part of this could be construed as a bad thing. I mean, i'm not gonna run out to the store and get a new phone just for this but it's a nice feature.

@dentui You have no idea what you're talking about. The Xbox 360 has an ATi graphics chip in it, an outdated one at that. You can easily spend 150 dollars OR LESS on an ATi card, or even an nVidia card and get much, much better performance than you can out of any console. Please, for the love of god do some research before you spout this crap. You can build a gaming computer from Newegg for 500 dollars that will last years, and be able to outperform any console. Why do you think they can sell consoles for so cheap? The cost isn't 100% subsidized by the sale of games, it's because the hardware is less expensive. Not to mention if you do 'fry' your system, it's modular. Meaning you don't have to send in your entire computer to get it fixed. If a processor breaks, you just replace the processor. Many times it's even under warranty, or within the time limit to RMA; making it free of charge.

Called it, this is the start of the Xbox Portable platform right here folks. I just recently had a blog post about something like this and this will more than likely lead us into a portable device which will be something of a cross between the Zune HD and a portable Xbox.

@dentui Well that's the difference, PC hardware usually doesn't just arbitrarily "fry" itself. Especially if you know what the **** you're doing. Also, alexkn64 is completely correct, it's clear you have absolutely no concept of PC hardware pricing.

@ dentui - Bill Gates make great OS ever,,, "BUT" Steve Ballmer not,, he's ((huge)) failure,, he didn't do anything better with Windows OS (Stagnant) & X360 (Broken things!!). :( - What he did was buying another company, I still remember he tried to buy Google, EA, 2K, etc. (a lot) when Microsoft introducing new products, he could only dancing & joking, he's CEO of Great Microsoft but act like Clown.

@alexkn64 While xbox supports fixes our whole xbox for $150, We go out and buy one of Many components a PC nees to run a good game for 100-150. I dont know what magical land you came from but unless you want a durable card, you cannot be cheap, unless you want to keep paying every 6 months.

@dentui You realize you can get a graphics card for 100 dollars that will outperform the graphics chip found in either the Xbox 360, or the PS3, right? You can also get a Phenom for 150 dollars or less that will also outperform the processor found in either the Xbox 360, or the PS3.

@rmj540 PC owners need to update their pc to keep up with games. We(console owners) on the other hand have the 360 in wich we don't have to do anything but just play. If our gets fried then we might have warranty or not, pay $150. If their gets fried, then they have to pay big bucks for a new GPU or even a CPU. WIch a good one cost more than $150.

@dentui So wait only the console owners have to pay for LIVE? Seems alittle one sided to me, I know I'd be mad if I owned a 360 and found out the PC and mobile phone users are playing online for free.
