Xbox Boss Responds to Lionhead Closure News

"I'm not sure I'm so loved right now (not looking for sympathy)."

Following the news this week that Fable Legends had been canceled and Microsoft was potentially closing developer Lionhead, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has now spoken up to say he's "not sure I'm so loved right now." Across a few tweets, Spencer responded to the news, though as you might have guessed, he said he didn't share specifics regarding the news.

"It's impossible to go into all the detail and I apologize for that," Spencer said to a fan, stressing that Microsoft remains committed to its first-party games despite this news (via VideoGamer).

Max: The Curse of Brotherhood developer Press Play, based in Denmark, was shuttered this week, too. Lionhead's closure is not 100 percent confirmed at this point.

Fable Legends isn't completely erased yet, either, as the game's beta will remain playable until mid-April.

He went on to say that it is Microsoft's intention to continue to create new franchise and expand its existing ones. And as referenced earlier, he also frankly acknowledges that he might not be the most loved Xbox figure at this time, though he says he's not looking for sympathy.

You can see Spencer's tweets below.

it feels like Microsoft is going the wrong direction. I know that seems weird since how its' been pretty obvious they have been heading in the wrong direction for years. But now it seems to be taking real shape outside of critique and being outsold worldwide.

closing studios, i read that means kinect devs are almost extinct as well. then we read about them not having true exclusives anymore with them all being on PC.

it really feels like Microsoft is making some irreversible mistakes now that it sending them further down the rabbit hole than any realistic gamer thought

@Jdzspace: Not sure you know how to use the "rabbit hole" analogy. Maybe you should read that POS called Alice in tripland one more time. On second thought God **** no. But at least use the reference to that garbage forced on young minds correctly.

.It's a pretty apt analogy, you just have to think about it for a second. Going down the rabbit hole into a warped awkward version of reality in the story, going down the rabbit hole into a warped awkward representation of Microsoft's vision of gaming.that nobody really wants and if it goes much further there will be no return

@Jdzspace: Agree. Combine that with their talk of "upgradeable consoles" and not definitively committing to next gen, the future is not looking bright for them atm imo.

@DIOSNY: I'm sure he also said there would be a Fable Legends game...and see how that turned out? Just because Phil says something doesn't mean it's gospel.

@DIOSNY: He said he can't fully commit to there being an Xbox after this, so you tell me what he needs to say.

@boardsport311: Yeah cause that's how the tech industry works nobody confirms anything until it's official specially when it's year away from being released you have to read between the lines.

They either know exactly what they're doing and this was for the greater good, or they have no idea what they're doing and this was another proof of that. I honestly can't tell anymore. I mean, one day they fund a masterpiece like Ori and the Blind Forest, and the other day they take a huge crap on Conker, cancel a game and close a studio. Microsoft is weird.

@Tiwill44: Ori? What a waste of $20. Ori and the frustrating shithole forest. Masterpiece my ass! These games that act like they deserve the time to master them are overreaching. A $20 game should be fairly easy to beat so I can move on to better games. Who still likes fucking platforming games anyway? I would have stuck around for the emotional story but the gameplay got so demanding I rage quit. This coming from a guy who beat Blood borne solo and Dark souls 2 also just so you know I'm not some quitter kid.

Poor Phil....

We don't know the details of the situation, but he's getting sacked for it anyways.
