Xbox Boss Responds to Lionhead Closure News

"I'm not sure I'm so loved right now (not looking for sympathy)."

207 Comments

Following the news this week that Fable Legends had been canceled and Microsoft was potentially closing developer Lionhead, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has now spoken up to say he's "not sure I'm so loved right now." Across a few tweets, Spencer responded to the news, though as you might have guessed, he said he didn't share specifics regarding the news.

No Caption Provided

"It's impossible to go into all the detail and I apologize for that," Spencer said to a fan, stressing that Microsoft remains committed to its first-party games despite this news (via VideoGamer).

Max: The Curse of Brotherhood developer Press Play, based in Denmark, was shuttered this week, too. Lionhead's closure is not 100 percent confirmed at this point.

Fable Legends isn't completely erased yet, either, as the game's beta will remain playable until mid-April.

He went on to say that it is Microsoft's intention to continue to create new franchise and expand its existing ones. And as referenced earlier, he also frankly acknowledges that he might not be the most loved Xbox figure at this time, though he says he's not looking for sympathy.

You can see Spencer's tweets below.

If you clowns really think that MS is just going to leave all that royalty + XBL money on the table and get out of the console business you're out of your mind.

@DIOSNY:

If they can get people to Windows 10 and the new Windows store they'll likely keep adding Xbox type features with the app and create xbl on win 10 so it's not really leaving money on the table but expanding potential xbl customer base.

@lrdfancypants: and that's their plan I agree 100%! but they're going to service both markets if you think about it they've done all that already on console why just abandoned it to start from zero on PC + the X1 user base keeps growing every month yes it's not growing as fast as the PS4 but 360 didn't sale as many consoles as the Wii and it's considered a total success, why wouldn't X1 be considered a success if it's doing even better than 360 did at this point in its cycle.

@DIOSNY:

They were hugely successful with xbl whether people like it or not and successfully changed console gaming with it.

I don't know why people doubt their ability to do it on PC.

So, if they don't close LionHead... Maybe a real Fable game, in the future?

Those who were in the beta should have an idea.

Honestly, this is completely the wrong way... a software company really should focus on that. Develop and publish software msft, that will get some earnings going.

Everybody acting like Lion Head has done anything worth buying in the last 5yrs. it's obvious that their best work is behind them at this point it's better to take those resources and put them on a new IP made by a team with a better track record.

@Mirimon78: That's because they had to be made.. no IP existed at that point. Halo was also something they acquired. MS didn't make Halo. They saw Bungie making Halo for PC, bought the studio, canceled the PC version (Gearbox ported it over to PC years later) and made it Xbox exclusive.

After those IP were established, they felt little need to create new IPs. They have Viva Pinata, and those Kinect games if you count those. The next new IP of note I've seen from 1P is Sea of Thieves. Otherwise, they've just rehashed the same IPs over and over. Forza has become an annual franchise. The Halo story that was meant to end with 3 has turned into a second trilogy. Gears of War, when Epic decided they were done with it, MS bought the IP from them just so they could keep making more of them. Fable.. yeah, same IP they've been milking since the first Xbox.

@lostn: Actually the lead platform for Halo before the Microsoft acquisition was the Macintosh, not PC. Bungie was primarily a Mac developer back then and had just started to dip their toes into PC development. It was initially going to be a RTS game, not a FPS (I have early screenshots in one of my Mac programming manuals). Steve Jobs was a little more than pissed at Gates when they bought was to be the flagship game for the Macintosh systems.

So how's that whole "1st party focus" going for you, Philly boy? Not too good, it seems. But then, exclusives in general are becoming more and more of a sore spot for the XB1.

I believe it's a corporate decision rather than just a decision made by Spencer or his team. I also believe that Spencer have almost zero say when the decision is made in front of him. Everyone knows the Xbox division isn't the focus of this corporate group called Microsoft, but is always the first one that gets the knife.

Microsoft's first party situation is looking pretty dire.

Is their plan to force studios to make endless sequels until nobody wants them anymore and they have to be shut down?

Lionhead lost more with Molyneux than they'd like to admit. Fable 3, while divisive, was the last Fable game I loved. This beta did nothing for me, and only seemed unique because of the humor.

"It's impossible to go into all the detail and I apologize for that,"

That's okay Phil. I am here to help. Fable 1 was a decent enough game that fell well short of expectations, but was mostly worth it anyway. Fable 2 improved on the formula and basically represented the high mark for the series. Fable 3 was a soulless piece of shit and marked the time in most major franchises when the magic is gone and they're just shoveling stuff out the door and relying on the name to sell the game.

Fable Kinect (it's real name) was an idiotic attempt to revive the franchise by pairing it with a fad technology that both Sony and Microsoft were trying desperately to copy from Nintendo when they caught lightning in a bottle in the hopes of reaching some mythical mass market audience that was going to be a dependable cash cow going forward similar to how so many companies decided to abuse their major single player RPGs to try and capture the mythical mass market MMO cash cow. (And now everybody is chasing after mobile and social gaming.)

That brings us to Fable Legends, which was based on another faulty misconception of last generation that every game in the world needs a multiplayer mode and needs to be converted to be multiplayer focused even if that's not the thing that created the initial fanbase to begin with. Nobody was excited at all about Fable Legends as a result of that faulty vision and the previous two unholy abominations in the series. Like with the Kinect, you eventually wised up and decided to cut your losses and stop throwing good money after bad.

So, to cliff notes this whole thing, the game was cancelled because it never should have been approved to begin with and a lot of people are going to get laid off because of blunders at the executive level.

I think I covered it.

@BeefoTheBold:

I think all the Fable games were mediocre. I like to call them, "rpg's for people who don't like rpg's."

Fable Legends actually looked fun. It didn't matter if it was Fable themed or not, I liked the concept.

@BeefoTheBold: Agreed, though I personally think the Lost Chapters was the highlight, Fable 2 seemed shallow. Regardless, Legends was the game that nobody asked for. Nobody wanted it, and they tried to shovel it down our throats. I'm hoping the gaming industry can learn from this. And that Microsoft passes the IP onto a decent developer to reboot this franchise. Because that's what it needs. A fresh start.

@BeefoTheBold: very spot on. I have a mate who puts fable 3 on par with no.2 and I will never understand why. Personally I always preferred the 1st game but loved the 2nd and could see why others prefer it. I don't even want to comment on fable Kinect and legends. Very depressing times for the series

Lionhead was a bunch of con artists and deserved to be closed down years ago.

They can rot in pieces.

They did the right thing, but several years late.

I was only going to play it because it was free. If it had cost money, I wouldn't have bought it. Not my type of game. Too bad for Lionhead and the other devs that lost their jobs though.

@xhawk27: So you do realized your time is worth something right? Why play something you don't enjoy just because it's free? Your time is priceless. You will never get more of it. Play only what enthralls you or don't play.

What's the deal with the other 6 studios that disappeared off their official studio list also?

That's 8 studios in one day. Thats pretty shocking.

@lrdfancypants: There is absolutely nothing to see there - there were no layoffs related to any the web site clean-up.

Let me throw some facts your way. Of those 6 studios listed there, only 3 had ever produced a game and they made 1 each. Five of the studios were Kinect or HoloLens focused. Team Dakota is still in existence even though they have been removed from the site, but they are pretty much now relegated to Project Spark support. All the other studios were consolidated under the Microsoft Games Studio name - no major layoffs occurred from that consolidation. All this was done some time ago, they are now just tidying up the web site.

Just another case of the internet jumping to wild conclusions based on no facts.

@dlCHIEF58:

You're just making crap up.

You have no idea what occurred during the shutdown and consolidation of those studios.

The only fact is: MS announced Lionhead and Press Play.

Game sites caught via Google cached pages MS studios page clearing 6 more studios without announcement. When requested MS provided a PR statement release which I've already quoted twice.

You're just saying things.

The fact that they're Kinect and Hololens doesn't negate it as news it's the opposite. It signals what most suspect, Kinect support really is done, and makes one wonder what projects got shifted or continued or canceled for hololens.

Good grief. Untwist your panties and speak facts.

If you source your intimate knowledge of the shutdown and consolidation of the other 6 studios I'll agree with you.

I sourced my stuff several times already you psycho.

@lrdfancypants: Sorry but I made nothing up, nearly everything I wrote was fact. I am just dispelling the misinformation that is spreading from your post by adding context and facts you've left out. The information is out there if you'd bother looking further than just two articles. I'm not implying that you are putting up anything incorrect, but the way you present it is causing a lot of people to get the wrong idea and thus spread inaccurate rumors and more misinformation from faulty conclusions.

And I'm not the one resorting to name calling nor are my "panties in a bunch".

I do fear that Kinect support will unfortunately wane (at least for a while), but this web site find is not why or should have been any indication of it. Only 2 of those studios have ever produced a Kinect game - Kinect Adventures and Kinect Joyride - nothing since then. The other 3 have produced nothing, they have just been listed on the site forever and have never announced or produced anything for the public. Team Dakota is still very much in existence and have been communicating with members on the forums THIS WEEK regarding the server issues with the game - coincidental and unrelated. The waning Kinect support is more evident in the dashboard updates released than any of these insignificant studios being consolidated to work on different projects.

Nope, not letting you off the hook, sorry.

Source your "facts" or its opinion.

Consolidation does not mean jobs were not lost.

Everything I posted was fact as reported and sourced.

My thoughts as to why they're doing it wasn't even a negative one as I stated.
