WRC Hands-On

Italian developer Milestone is taking on the official World Rally Championship game, and we got to play it for the first time at E3 2010.

Since it last appeared in 2006 on the PlayStation Portable, the World Rally Championship hasn't been represented in video game form for quite some time. Now, developer Milestone of SBK fame is stepping up with a new game for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. We got to play it at E3 2010 for the first time, as well as meet the developer behind the game.

It's clear that Milestone's take on the World Rally Championship is very much based in simulation territory. The game will boast more than 40 different surfaces, all of which will have an effect on your car's performance. A full damage model will also see bumpers, bonnets, and doors crumpling before internal components such as radiators begin to give in. However, like in Milestone's other games, you can tweak all aspects of the difficulty, making the physics engine less punishing and adding more driving aids if you find things too challenging.

Milestone has been busy dispatching artists and photographers around the world to capture the World Rally Championship's 2010 circuits. Sebastien Loeb’s home region of Alsace will be represented for the first time in a game, reflecting the course's appearance in this year's championship. The developer has also captured co-driver commentary in five different languages and in both male and female varieties. We found that they even scream when you crash the car, as we did multiple times during our hands-on.

The single-player career mode will see you rising up through the ranks, joining a team, and securing a sponsor. The online career will be structured in a similar way, with race points contributing to your position on the leaderboard. The multiplayer mode will feature support for up to 16 players, but in the rallying tradition, there will be no collisions. Offline, the same ethos means that there will be no split-screen, but there will be a hotseat mode that will let you compete on the same track in quick succession. Time attack mode will also let you upload and download ghost data, which will allow you to compete with and learn from the best players in the world.

WRC is currently about 75 percent complete and will be available in September on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. We'll keep an eye on its development and bring you more on the game when we have it.

I tried the game today, it's looking good and it's best wrc game experience i have tried in a game so far. the demo doesn't make it justice. PS: For those wandering, the game leaked to the internet on october 5th. Still going to buy it when it comes out.

I played the demo and just hope the disclaimer that it was made when the game was still a work in progress is true!! Pre-ordered it anyway as after fiddling around for about half an hour think it's gonna be worth the money :)

Very disappointed after playing the demo. I have been waiting for a wrc game on the PS3. Just have to wait and see if having all the features of the full game will make it a worthwhile game to play.

this game looks really bad on the YouTube videos, looks nothing like what you'd except in 2010 with PS3 power, sad effort on Blackbean's behalf... Guess we'll wait for Dirt 3...

@ nyranasaurus I'm not sure where your coming from... ultra low budget games (bad one's especially) usually only come out on PC, so i don't understand what you mean by 'good enough for pc', because all the worst games are on PC (e.g. Big rigs over the road racing, a terrible game), and there are plenty of great console exclusive games

Because racing games on PC are ONLY simulation racing games and games like Race 07, F1 99-02 and RFactor are the most amazing SIM racing games ever made, period, nothing on console comes close to the hardcore SIM pure racing of RFactor and RACE 07. A WRC racing game has a lot to contend with on PC as far as racing sims go. If the developers think its good enough for pc gamers, then it must be ok. Just like NBA 2K10 thought thier game was good enough for pc. And IT IS GOOD ENOUGH.

I hope its everything DIRT should of been. ITS going on PC... Now thats just class. If its good enough to be on PC, it must be an ok game. If a gam eis good enough, it will be on pc, if it doesnt go to pc, its obviously not good enough.

@team_steve you should have played wrc much more fun much better looking and a tad more realistic. Colin was great for arcadeness but not enough depth to it. I hope in this game that if you hit something it really damages the car. But my greatest wish is that the damage carries through and you only get so long to repair it like in reality. I would love on the hardest dificulty that you have to nurse the car around the track to win. Really looking forward to this, i need a racer. Will hold out on buying dirt 2 to wait for this baby!

Why rant about dirt 2? Dirt 2 never wanted to be a realistic simulation, it went for a bigger audience with easier (but very enjoyable) gameplay. and I love it for w3hat it is, just as I will (hopefully) love WRC: Fia championship for what it is: A more realistic rallyracer

My mistake - just double checked. The best rally game was Colin McRae on the PS1 (that's PS-one). It's simply not been improved on. Sure, graphics are better but not the game.

You have to go right back to the first Colin McRae game on PS2 to find the only good rally game I've ever played. Since then I think its gone backwards in terms of playability.

Sounds awesome, I really like the WRC and V Rally games of the past so I hope this can get to the level I am hoping for. The screenshots so far seem to show it looks the part at least.

ya, Dirt 2 wasn't realistic, but that might have been exactly why it was fun to drive. I just won't even consider Dirt 3 if that excessively drawn out menu system is still in the game, and why I didn't continue playing Dirt 2... got better things to do with my limited gaming time than sit through menu screens and unskippable reward announcements. This WRC as the next genuine rally sim would be great. It doesn't have to be as pretty as Dirt is, but it would be nice to have a more modern edition of what Richard Burns Rally was.

@sammyk0 i think he would be good in the games industry lol. yeah i forgot that there was a ford escort but was probably distracted by all the strange car choices to notice. not saying dirt 2 is a bad game, just think it's not a 'Colin McRae' game. title it under something else (like Ken Block Rally, or X-Games Off Road Xtreme!) and it would be different in way i think about it (maybe others). and being unrealistic isn't a bad thing, infact WRC3 had arcade handling and remains one of the best rally game ever (in my mind at least, heck i still play on it). you put a fair point across..... you want the games industry job? :P lol

i just hope people can grow a pair for this game if it really is the next "big" rally sim, so its popular and gets more following in the USA. And i hope gamespot doesnt give it a low review because the reviewer just sucks at it. Lotta people don't understand that good simulations have a steep learning curve, usually requiring tens of hours to even be able to drive competitively on-line. You get your moneys worth out of games like that, once you master what at first seemed so hard... oh the satisfaction! I dont play easy arcade racing games you get all you can out of those for a weekend rental!

@sammyk0 I understand your take on the "fun and serious" aspects of the game, and I do get that it is important that they maintain the fun factor in a franchise, but they could have made the game fun while still keeping their focus on world rally. DiRT could be a perfect example, as it featured a huge amount of vehicles for rally races and hill climb events, while also adding a great and varied list of tracks, everywhere from Japan to Australia, but more importantly, it was fun. But Codemasters' objective was obvious and we can see they changed demographically. DiRT 2 is still a very fun game, and to this day I still play it. And in no way is Codemasters a sub par developer, but I do stand a bit disappointed with the change of focus.
