WoW Classic Was So Congested That Players Literally Lined Up To Complete Quests

World of Warcraft's new Classic edition has arrived--and so have wait times both inside and outside of the game.

World of Warcraft Classic is out now, allowing players to dive back into the MMO before it received any expansions. The release is proving to be wildly popular, and in some striking ways. As expected, players were faced with lengthy server queues to simply get into the game. But the waiting didn't necessarily end once you make your way through the queues: Those who did manage to get in found other lines to wait in. Social media reports show that players have been waiting in literal queues in-game to complete quests.

Because players inhabit a shared world and are tasked with similar objectives, this means having to compete with others to land the necessary number of kills on a particular enemy type, for instance. If someone beats you to it, you're forced to wait for them to respawn. This has always been an issue in WoW, as in many MMOs, particularly around unique bosses, of which there might only be one for everyone on a server to slay. But with everyone starting out at Level 1 and thus completing the same batch of early-game quests, this becomes extremely problematic.

Now Playing: World Of Warcraft Classic: How To Get Access - GS News Update

The images coming out of vanilla WoW are pretty striking. We've rounded up a few of the posts we've spotted on Twitter, and you can see them at the bottom of this post. This likely won't last as some players drop off and others advance beyond the opening stages of the game, but for now it's a sight to behold.

Waiting in line in the starting zones might sound annoying, but some people seem to be taking it all in stride. "All these people waiting patiently in the queue to kill the boss in #WowClassic - this is the politest thing I’ve ever seen in gaming, ever," wrote Twitter user @Farore13.

The lengthy lines appear to be affecting multiple WoW Classic servers, so there appears to be no escaping the wait. However, your mileage will undoubtedly vary, and wait times will surely decrease with time and as players spread out into Azeroth. After all, WoW Classic was only just released hours ago, so a max influx of players into small areas is to be expected.

A dramatic video posted on Reddit shows off what it looks like when hundreds of players spawn in at the same time. It's pretty incredible to see.

It's not a completely new thing for players of online games to wait in literal in-game lines. You may recall that the on launch day for the original The Division, people waited in line to use a laptop.

WoW Classic, as its name suggests, is a re-release of the original MMO from 2004 with some functionality changes. It's free for existing subscribers of WoW. For more, check out GameSpot's rundown of everything you need to know about WoW Classic.

I still haven't found a proper answer to this question of mine about Classic. Is Classic actually Vanilla WoW, or is it modern WoW jazzed up to look like Vanilla? Meaning: Is classic actually WoW v1.12? Or is it modern WoW engine, with a remade Vanilla world map?

It's 2 COMPLETELY different concepts, but it's hard to explain without making it sound like they are the same thing. If I play Classic, is it EXACTLY the same as playing WoW 1.12 on a private server (or even retail when it was 1.12)?

To me, there is no "Classic" or even true "Vanilla" unless you play from 1.xx TO 1.12... 1.12 is very different from 1.8, for example. Many changes were made from each content patch, and that is VERY important to note for an actual Vanilla experience. Content patches were the expansions BEFORE expansions came out. I started around 1.7 or 1.8, and I genuinely prefer that over the "finished package" that is 1.12

Starting at 1.12 and calling it the Vanilla experience is like starting at the latest retail patch and calling it the full WoW experience. You miss out on a LOT of stuff that is now redundant, and you miss out on EVEN MORE that was outright removed from the game.

@sethjustseth:

It's not the TRUE original but it's really close. The reason the project took so long is they kept all of the bug fixes from the current game and stripped it backwards until it looked and felt like the old version.

In reality it's not even that congested. There's only like 3-5 servers that actually get like this meanwhile there's like 20 servers that are medium/low population and NEVER have queues to get on or get like this. Meanwhile people, for some reason I can't understand, decide to put themselves through this instead of distributing the population more evenly across all those other servers.

@dynamotnt: Except that it's your mentality which literally turns those other servers into ghost towns because even dealing with insanely stupid queues people still won't distribute to make all the servers have high population.

@Roman217: Also there's the auction house. If you intend to BUY stuff at ease, then high population is your key. If you want to SELL stuff, and actually have it be high over the vend value, then you need lower populations. I hate high population servers solely for this reason. I got myself some stacks of skins, yeah, well they're being given away for basically free cuz 80000 other people are posting 200 stacks each. That is not fun for people who play for the economy.

A flooded AH because of high populations is good and bad, depending on your side of issue. I can't make groups because the population is so low, but I can be loved by the entire faction (or even BOTH with goblin AH) for keeping the AH stocked at respectable prices. OR, I can get into dungeons instantly cuz there's a jillion people LFG, and I can buy anything I want at anytime for basically free, but I can't SELL anything cuz there's a jillion other people selling a million of the item I wanna sell.

All in all, lower populations tend to create a much more intimate experience, a much more 'mature' experience. You can't get away as easily with being a ninjacking trade channel trolling douchebag if the population is so low that 60% of the entire faction know's who is who, and what they do and stand for.

I appreciate the wholesomeness of this. I also think it's pretty funny that we essentially have Queue Simulator as a minigame in WoW.

Much different than the true "classic" days when 300 players were running around the same patch of land waiting for Hogger to respawn.

I mean, it's nice that people are behaving civilly, but how are the servers this congested when Blizzard has the resources it has in this day and age?

@lionheartssj1: People didn't want quest zone instancing or sharding. This is what happens. Everyone starts at the same level. There's a couple minute timer. Maximum of 30-40 players achieving X in an hour with a demand of hundreds or thousands. It's classic. Wont be a problem in a weeks time as players start spreading into other zones.

In 2019 it should be effortless to deploy new servers and scale out in automated fashion.

I suppose WoW has too much tech debt or isn't architected in a way to take advantage of current containerization and orchestration technologies. How many resources does a single WoW instance even require to serve if full of players? I imagine not much by today's resource standards.

These kinds of prolonged issues should really be a thing of the past at this point.

@ecs33: Wow is containerized (Kubernetes). They could easily scale out, add resources, but this is what players of classic wanted. A distributed, sharded environment isn't and new "realms" are opened up as population warrants, but they want to avoid having to do server merges as classic is about the community. A single wow instance requires more than you would think. A lot of anti-exploit measures have been implemented over the past 15 years. Anything you do on client from a UI perspective goes through a series of "legality" checks on infra. Logging is also far more robust than back in the day.

@ecs33: This is what people asked for. No sharding, one server where everyone is part of the same community without instancing. My Tauren Mills is the same as your Tauren Mills if you’re part of my server.

This isn’t a tech debt problem, this is Blizzard allowing too many players to connect at once to avoid the old login queues. But that’s the trade off for players. Would you rather not be able to connect at all or have congestion in game during common objectives?

Funny how something that would have set the WOW forums on fire like the bombing of Dresden back when Classic was all there was is now somehow cool and quaint and awesome. Back then, this would have been considered the epitome of developer fail and melted oh so many snowflakes in a flaming lake of ragequit.

Looks almost like the first time my que popped years ago, except for the lines, because everyone scattered to adventure through the starting lines to see what it looked like and what could be done. And realizing that there is limited bag space for EVERYTHING I thought I would need. Then there were other options, like raids, but those required more than 1 person (and eventually more than me and my pet). Ahh the good ole days. I think as one of the "old timers" (someone called us in another article) I'll stick to BFA /WoA (depending on how you look at the game, not so much the title of it) until the excitement dies down a bit. After all, there are so many folks who will become bored with classic within the first three months, and then the que times will reduce for real game time players looking for a different sort of challenge, grinds, and raids that can last a very long time.

What will make the classic version most enjoyable, is when the complainers stop playing about how bad everything is, and remembers thry have other options to satisfy their need for instant gratification playing...as that is what non-classic is, a result of all the players who didn't appreciate all that classic was, the first time around. For those of you happiest now, enjoy! I did my first time ;) and look forward to the time I'll be able to return

honestly, the in game lines are good butttttttt..... this madness is what kills these games for me.. there is no uniqueness to them. when literally everyone if doing the exact same thing it kills the experience for me. Elder scrolls did this to me as well..

Favorite memory is going to this fire place and having to talk to this old man and when i got there another player walked through the door.... and killed the guy.. now my quest was over and i had no idea what happened. that kinda stuff kept happening and it was not worth the effort.

i get open world MMO style but it should be more random

@cottonfly: What RPGs are you a fan of? It's the lack of "you get a trophy" mentality that is propelling Classic WoW. Instant gratification is over-used in all MMOs these days. You get an achievement for literally everything in most games now, and so taking away all the comfort is appealing.

Waiting around for something fun to happen without it actually happening. Sounds like the Vanilla WoW experience to me. Not speaking ill of the people who want this, but this is a pretty good illustration of why I was never interested in it. At the very least, people politely organizing themselves like this is pretty cool to see.

@Barighm: Pretty sure they're being paid because people actually click on it. They don't have much else to talk about right now I guess.

I'm surprised though, alot of people at my work which I don't consider to be gamers are actually interested in vanilla wow, most of them took days off to play it too o.o" I rarely see that kind of interest with other games in the workplace.
