Wolverine Actor Took Salary Cut to Give Logan an R Rating

The success of Deadpool proved that an R-rated superhero film could find a huge audience. The upcoming Wolverine movie Logan will also carry the restricted rating, but it has now been revealed that star Hugh Jackman had to take a smaller salary to make it happen.

AICN writer Eric Vespe spoke to Logan director James Mangold, who told him "Hugh Jackman took a salary cut because he wanted to do an R-rated movie." Although Deadpool was a massive hit, it was made on a far smaller budget than many superhero movies, meaning that an R rating was much less of a risk for Fox. It has been reported that Jackman was paid as much as $20 million for the last two Wolverine movies, which carried PG-13 ratings.

The movie's recent trailer and clips certainly suggest that the film is sitting comfortably within an R. The notes contained in a page of script that Mangold tweeted in October hinted at something more hard-hitting than the previous Wolverine movies. "If you're on the make for a hyper choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying, CG f**kathon, this ain't your movie," they state. "In this flick, people will get hurt or killed when s**t falls on them."

Logan also stars Patrick Stewart, Stephen Merchant, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Boyd Holbrook, and Richard E. Grant. It hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
