Witcher 3 DLC Leaks Early, Dev Warns Against Downloading It

A new outfit for Ciri was accidentally released this week.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was not supposed to get any new DLC this week, but that's exactly what happened. This content, which online reports reveal to be a new outfit for Ciri, was released ahead of schedule, developer CD Projekt Red has confirmed.

No Caption Provided

The Polish studio now warns against downloading the DLC--Ciri's Zerrikanian outfit--because it "wasn't ready." And, as with any pre-release software, it might contain issues that could hurt your experience.

Though The Witcher 3's DLC campaign is taking this week off, CD Projekt Red plans to release at least three more free add-ons in the weeks to come.

Ciri's new outfit will follow previously released alternate attire for Geralt, Yennefer, and Triss.

What do you think of Ciri's new look? Let us know in the comments below.

In other Witcher 3 news, CD Projekt Red has announced a major patch for all versions of the game that will make a long list of substantial changes. You can read some of the key changes here, while the full patch notes are coming later this week.

Wish they just did all these free DLC items as a game update. It's annoying having to go searching for, and manually download all these updates.....

@bsford: These DLCs *are* free game updates. On Galaxy it always updates by itself before starting the game and the DLC is there.

@bsford: Well some of the quest DLC's are fairly big, if you're someone thats running low on space or just does not want to take up your HDD with DLC you won't use; then it's handy being able to download just what you want.

And if your on the ps4, you can just hover over your game and go down to related items and find the DLC right there (saves you the time to search). Also, if you haven't noticed, theres a notification that comes up everytime when you save a game thats from a previous update, so if they had a new update everytime a DLC comes out (practically once every week), theres a chance of a user corrupting or messing up their save files.

@bsford: Yeah, it's more of a gimmick than a feature. They really wanted to pull the whole, "we're doing free DLC!" thing, and having a new article pop up on game sites every once in a while for a few months is a great way to let everyone know that.

@oldtobie: Just a way for CDproject Red make their customers think their actually getting something. That way they get more folks to jump on the bandwagon and buy the game.

@bsford: With GoG Galaxy there's a DLC pass you can "purchase" for $0 and it acts like a season pass and just auto downloads the DLC as it becomes available. You can also go get them manually if you want.

As much as I'm enjoying the Witcher 3 and CDPR as a company, they're turning something really banal into a big thing. Blizzard is constantly releasing updates for their games - weapons and armor for Diablo, game modes and features for Starcraft, content updates for WoW - and they don't really make a big fuss out of those and claim "Hey look how out of the ordinary we are" when they release all that content. Sure, Blizzard has done some controversial decisions, but adding content for them is second nature, only without the boasting of CDPR as if they've revolutionised the entire gaming medium.

@Mevrick: Blizzard is an icon of video games industry, especially PC gaming. They don't need much publicity, they have awful lots of money, they have enormous experience. CDPR on the other hand...

@Vojtass: Out of all the repliers, that's actually a very valid argument, my friend. It's still a bit too bombastic for my taste, but I guess I can get where it's coming from.

@Mevrick: CDPR is just little shark hungry of success. I hope someday they will have position similar to Blizzard - I also hope they won't forget about ideas they're praising right now like DRM-free gaming and reasonable pricing (small DLCs for free, $ for big expansions only).

So? It's good marketing and PR for them and free DLC for us.

@CatAtomic999: I respectfully disagree. A company can earn significant reputation by giving constant quality updates as a natural occurrence. That is one of the reasons why Blizzard was well respected in the mid 90's and early 00's.

If CDPR had truthfully done anything out of the ordinary or unique in any way, then their boasting could somehow be justified, but this isn't the case(I mean the DLC aspect, not the game itself).

@northArrow: Blizzard is actually still doing it. The reason Blizzard has lost respect is because of some greedy decisions - the money auction house in Diablo 3 and some purchasable power ups in WoW for example - but not because they've stopped updating.

@Mevrick: WoW is an MMO so it doesn't count.
They are doing this because that is how they think it should be done, as an example to companies like ubisoft, activision and EA which charge for microscopic DLC.
They give those away and then sell expansion sized DLC.
It's about following through on what they believe and hoping more devs follow their example.
So what if other companies do it too? The more companies doing this the better.

@Avantyr: Don't get me wrong, mate, I'm not complaining about them doing it, or their motives. I'm complaining about them taking credit for it and publicising it as if they're the only beacon of light in whole wide gaming world.

Modesty comes a long way in the way of public image in my opinion. I gave Blizzard as an example since they're very nonchalant with their updates. For them it's like "of course we're bringing new content, why even bring it up?"

@Mevrick: blizzard has gone to shit along time ago. Big difference in genre between all those game's you used as example, Ive played blizzard games since the 90s the very begining and blizzard now is horrible d3 was shit sc2 water down how many xpacs to fix it.Why bring it it's called keeping your consumer update on with what your doing.

@Jd234: The games' quality is not in question, Jd(It's also a matter of taste, since clearly there is an avid player base for those games). I also don't see why the genre difference is a counter argument? Free content updates are free content updates - extra maps, extra quests, extra weapons, extra cosmetics - what does it matter which game genre is it coming for?

You see it as simple 'consumer updates on with what your doing', but these weekly content updates were publicized way before the game's release, and also mentioned in every opportunity by CDPR to show how different and special they are - which, i believe, is simply blowing what should be a trivial matter out of proportions.

Oh, yeah...a product that "wasn't ready" inadvertently found its way uploaded and broadcasted to the Xbox Live store. Folks, this is what you call an "unofficial Xbox exclusive." That's what leaks are. Easter Eggs. I wish they'd just stop trying to pretend we're dumb and sugar coating it with a bunch of nonsensical PR. Especially, about it being untested. They're basically calling Microsoft, themselves and Microsoft's publishing and certification systems stupid.

@kopesettik: this does not mean it was intended for Xbox to be the first to have this content available. you can call it "unofficial XBOX exclusive" but it doesn't mean that it really is, early access and exclusive are not the same thing. could have been a misprint on a release contract or any number of simple mistakes that lead to it's early broadcasting. i doubt CdProjekt or MS would bother hiding the fact that they got an early DLC package for Xbox.

@skiggy34: explaining reality leads you to think someone is on the verge of crying? you must take all this gaming bullshit way too seriously or just have a strange social complex.

even if it was, would anyone but an insecure fanboy even care if some cheesy clothing for one character was exclusive to one system or another?

back to my point though. Microsoft nor CDProjektRed would have any reason to lie about it being early access for Xbox, even if it was. why would they bother covering it up with some phony story about "leaks".

don't get the armor designs for this game. with all the awesome content and gameplay it has some of the worst looking armor i've seen in modern fantasy games. out of the 12-15 armor sets i acquired through the game maybe 3 of them were decent looking, maybe 2 others actually looked good. i could understand having an already determined fashion style for the Witcher universe that could limit possibilities but that doesn't mean they had to make 90% of armor and clothes in the game cheesy looking.

They certainly have an unusual look for fantasy... it's all very 1500's, where most fantasy worlds have more of a medieval aesthetic.

I found myself wishing I could set my armor's appearance separately, like-- find a piece you particularly like and just keep that look while changing stats with updated armors. There was a red sort of... I don't know what you call it... a surcoat or something, like a robe. That looked cool. Then I had to swap it for my Glorious Striped Beer Belly Assault Armor.

@elessarGObonzo: +100. Maybe they should hire better concept artists. Those dlc armors for Triss/Yen and Ciri are the worst. Triss looked like some korean mmo character, Yen like Morrigan from Dragon Age and Ciri... Ciri's alternative design is just extremely uninteresting. It's like it was designed in about 5 minutes or something. I really hate character concept in TW3 and character concepts in TW3 artbook wasn't really good compared to the other games.

@peekaboo0: kind of odd they'd go out of the way to have these different look DLCs but keep up the horrible designs. these would've been the perfect opportunity to replace the original boring stuff with much better designs.

As much as I love Witcher 3, this just resonates with what I thought about this game's '' free '' DLC. This is just cut-off content from the main game then distributed weekly '' as if '' they were working on it. They're not.

@Fia1: I get that, but why say that when they've come out and said this DLC isn't quite ready and could mess up your game if you download it. If it was "done" and cut from the game it should integrate just fine. Unless you just think they're lying, which as cynical as I am, I just don't see such an elaborate ploy developing here.

Because to me it sounds like IT IS ready and WON'T mess up with your game. They're just making the statement to cover their tracks.
