Witcher 3 Dev Responds to Mod Tools Controversy

"At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Acclaimed open-world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received official modding support this week, but not everyone is happy with the available tools. Released Friday was the "Modkit" for The Witcher 3.

It's a toolsuite that allows players to modify the game in a number of crazy ways (check out the image and videos below), but some fans say it's not enough.

Instead, what they were expecting was a new version of CD Projekt Red's "REDkit," a more fleshed out mod tools package that's currently available for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

And for good reason. In a January 2014 interview, CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski said the developer was "looking to release the REDkit sometime after [The Witcher 3] launches for the modding community."

But, when announcing The Witcher 3's Modkit this week, CD Projekt Red admitted that "the modding tools we are releasing are not an editor. They're meant for people who are somewhat experienced with modding software and are designed to make creating mods easier."

Now, CD Projekt Red community manager Marcin Momot has spoken out on Twitter to address the situation. He says the developer has no plans to release a new version of the REDkit for The Witcher 3.

A fan asked, "Any ETA yet for a Full Featured TW3 REDkit? Maybe after the AddOn's? Or is this (no offense) everything we get?" Momot replied: "This is the mod support for the Wild Hunt. At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Plenty of other Witcher 3 players have also taken to Twitter to voice their discontent over the current mod tools. Momot offered the same response as above to all questions about the available mod tools.

LOL! Once again another example of entitled gamers. CDRP didn't have to release these tools. They didn't have to give you free dlc. They didn't have to make a huge and expansive game.

@xcrimsonxsynx: Another example of an idiot who doesn't grasp the fact that we are quite entitled, because we PAID for the game, we weren't given it out of generosity.

A bad company is one that gives it consumers the bare minimum.

Why are you defending companies? ask yourself-- they aren't in need of saving, least of all by the amazingly simple "entitlement" yelling crowd.

@xcrimsonxsynx: We didn't have to spend our hard-earned money on this game either. That sword swings both ways. And we were promised REDKit by the CEO, no less.

What gets called 'entitlement' these days used to be called standing up for customer rights. Did anyone at the appliance store call your grandpaw entitled when he blew two months paychecks on a refrigerator that didn't work and he brought it back to get a refund?

@xcrimsonxsynx: True. But then you shouldn't say things like... "looking to release the REDkit sometime after [The Witcher 3] launches for the modding community." some people get more enjoyment from modding games than they do playing them. If those people bought the game based on that quote. Then they have a right to feel ripped off.

@reaperfifth: Exactly, if you treat modding like a natural part of your game's post-launch experience and don't deliver on it then that will count against you.

Pretty sure they'll release something after the last free DLC and paid expansions. Until then it's only natural they are focused on them, after all the patches they had to work since release.

Mods or no mods, still the best game by far this year (and previous years) IMHO.
