Witcher 3 Dev Responds to Mod Tools Controversy

"At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Acclaimed open-world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received official modding support this week, but not everyone is happy with the available tools. Released Friday was the "Modkit" for The Witcher 3.

No Caption Provided

It's a toolsuite that allows players to modify the game in a number of crazy ways (check out the image and videos below), but some fans say it's not enough.

Instead, what they were expecting was a new version of CD Projekt Red's "REDkit," a more fleshed out mod tools package that's currently available for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

And for good reason. In a January 2014 interview, CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski said the developer was "looking to release the REDkit sometime after [The Witcher 3] launches for the modding community."

But, when announcing The Witcher 3's Modkit this week, CD Projekt Red admitted that "the modding tools we are releasing are not an editor. They're meant for people who are somewhat experienced with modding software and are designed to make creating mods easier."

Now, CD Projekt Red community manager Marcin Momot has spoken out on Twitter to address the situation. He says the developer has no plans to release a new version of the REDkit for The Witcher 3.

A fan asked, "Any ETA yet for a Full Featured TW3 REDkit? Maybe after the AddOn's? Or is this (no offense) everything we get?" Momot replied: "This is the mod support for the Wild Hunt. At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Plenty of other Witcher 3 players have also taken to Twitter to voice their discontent over the current mod tools. Momot offered the same response as above to all questions about the available mod tools.

The money developers can make spending time working on console related stuff far exceeds what they gain by doing something nice for PC gamers. Creating mod tools that can be used by the community takes up the time of people that could be working on a new project or a DLC that they can also sell to console people.

Look at fallout 4, they've said they dont know when there modding tools will be available to pc gamers. Thats probably the last thing on there minds. They're focused on dlc's because they're a business and free things dont make you money. Especially free things offered only to the minority in this case, pc gamers.

@Veladus: Did you not ready what I said? They are trying to keep there customers happy. The console customers. You have only so many hours in the day to get new content done so you have to prioritize that time.

Go look up the figures for console sales compared to PC sales. Look at the actual differences in money developers/publishers make from them. Maybe then you'll understand what I'm trying to say. I myself am a die hard PC fan, I don't own any consoles but I can understand there point of view and they are a business after all and they have to make money. If that involves not releasing an extra bonus item that's free because the time it would take to do it is better spent else well, oh well.

Why does it upset you so much when someone says that consoles sell more then pc?

@petek480: You might want to check out sales numbers recently released, because PC sales bring in more than X1 and 360 combined in many cases, Skyrim on PC has over 25 million owners and that was in no small part thanks to mods, so PC and PS4 are now where the money is, PC is not the minority, Xbox and Nintendo gamers are.

You got it completely backwards it seems. XBox outsold everything combined by a lot.

@mkeezay22: Source?

Because the last sales figures I saw for Skyrim were 20 million across ALL platforms and Xbox 360 was the top platform for the game.

@deathstream: Skyrim sold 9.2 million copies on Steam. Source is Steamspy, which is proven to be very accurate. http://steamspy.com/app/72850

@nazgarmar: Just curious, does that site break down how many of those sales were well past the game's prime and sold for so little that the publisher barely made any money?

Even if the numbers were all full priced copies of the game, the comment I was replying to is still completely untrue.

@deathstream:

I can't find any actual numbers broken down (I.E. 360 sold X units, not X%). So it's hard to say. Steam doesn't publish sales, so the only numbers included in PC sales are physical disks sold. I imagine very, very few people that play PC games buy physical disks. Especially with Steam offering steep discounts so frequently. But unless someone can find a unit sold breakdown (actual units, not percentage) you can't really prove it either way. Or if Valve publishes sales figures.

WOW. this is a huge letdown. For anyone that doesn't see how big of a deal this is, you probably don't mod your games. Without redkit I believe we won't be able to make new maps, among other things. It is really a shame that they promised Redkit for W3 and now aren't going to deliver. I guess Fallout 4 will be the mod king. Such a shame we will have to fight the mass of bugs...

I don't know how upset I should be about this, but it doesn't sound good. Games without mod tools have done some rather awesome things, but it's always better to have solid official support.

I really don't see the big deal. Witcher 2 used redkit and that game barely had any mods of note made with it.

That's called official day1 mod support. Take notes Bethe$da.

Note: $ shows lion share in paid mods XD.

CDPR is planning to license out REDengine, but no licensing info has been revealed. For all we know they may go Epic's route and allow complete free non-commercial use of the engine and allow you to use TW3 assets. So if that's the case, technically he isn't lying about no REDkit, instead we get REDengine. Although, I'm just being optimistic.

It's about time some of the luster was taken off of the hacks at CDPR. The Witcher 3 is two steps back for the open world genre and one of the most overrated and overhyped games I have ever played. People fell for the, let's cut a few things from the game and release 1 a week and call it "free DLC" fraud, even the the real DLC is coming and is most definitely paid. Then there were the cheap shots they took at Bethesda for buggy releases and in August I'm still getting patches, the patches are causing new issues, and not all of the original bugs have been addressed. Now they release a weak mod tools set against what they said they were going to do months ago. Anyone want to take bets on how long before they become EA Poland? They sure have the basics down.

@jski: CDPR have always had great after the sale support. If you think they cut things to fake free DLC releases later then you don't know their history. Witcher 2 had some huge updates over a year after release.

@razeandjadith: CDPR is changing though, BTW the last piece of free DLC has already been released, any from this point on will be paid DLC, they are slowly acting more like the greedy companies they once bashed, CDPR is a great dev no doubt, but they are losing what made them what they are today.

They were too busy pretending they are giving their customers "free stuff" and caressing their PR to do things that actually matter.

@razama Please tell me that isn't true. Skyrim Mods of the Week was one of my favorite shows and they left to mod that borefest Witcher 3? Oh well, they can always switch to Fallout 4. There will be mods for that game before the tools are even released.:

Fallout 4 will most definitely steal their thunder now, because this greatly diminished the possible mods available for this game.

Why am i not surprised this is the case? Ever since Witcher 3 was revealed, CDPR has been different, and not the good kind of different. All this does is making me reconsider buying their games at full price.

Putting it simply, yes it's because they're now acting like other big companies. Companies that they used to try and make look worse than them, but it's a different world now that they entered the mainstream.

@silversix_: It's probably worse than EA cause they straight up lied to us after the fact that they stated in several articles about releasing REDKIT (Before that they lied about graphics downgrade), not this lame POS so called "Modkit" which doesn't even do mods properly. I'm never trusting CDPR again. And I thought they were the "Good Guys". For shame.

Indeed, it's just another lie over and over again from them now. I guess it didn't take much to corrupt them after all, and the ''good guy'' cred is not worth anything now.

Cry me a river lol. Patience. :) Eddie Makuch is master of clickbait news. G$ needs brainwashed traffic. CDPro focus is on TW3 expansion packs. When they will move towards Cyberpunk 2077, they might consider REDKIT. CDPR is planning to license out REDengine, but no licensing info has been revealed.
