Witcher 3 Dev Responds to Mod Tools Controversy

"At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Acclaimed open-world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received official modding support this week, but not everyone is happy with the available tools. Released Friday was the "Modkit" for The Witcher 3.

No Caption Provided

It's a toolsuite that allows players to modify the game in a number of crazy ways (check out the image and videos below), but some fans say it's not enough.

Instead, what they were expecting was a new version of CD Projekt Red's "REDkit," a more fleshed out mod tools package that's currently available for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

And for good reason. In a January 2014 interview, CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski said the developer was "looking to release the REDkit sometime after [The Witcher 3] launches for the modding community."

But, when announcing The Witcher 3's Modkit this week, CD Projekt Red admitted that "the modding tools we are releasing are not an editor. They're meant for people who are somewhat experienced with modding software and are designed to make creating mods easier."

Now, CD Projekt Red community manager Marcin Momot has spoken out on Twitter to address the situation. He says the developer has no plans to release a new version of the REDkit for The Witcher 3.

A fan asked, "Any ETA yet for a Full Featured TW3 REDkit? Maybe after the AddOn's? Or is this (no offense) everything we get?" Momot replied: "This is the mod support for the Wild Hunt. At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Plenty of other Witcher 3 players have also taken to Twitter to voice their discontent over the current mod tools. Momot offered the same response as above to all questions about the available mod tools.

my bet is that this has to do with the major changes they have to make to the engine for Cyberpunk 2077.

I was expecting the redkit as well, but I still think they are going to either release that, or expand the current tools, maybe at the time of one of the expansions release, or for an enhanced edition late next year.

@Zloth2: for what I remember reading, a new system to simulate projectile physics, because of all the guns, implementation for vehicles, and changes to how the engine handles large crowds and a high density of assets., because the game is mainly in a huge city. Also its likely that they are experimenting with D3D12 to see how much they can improve the graphics and/or solve some problems the current REDengine 3 might have.

Cyberpunk is going to be much more "innovative" and original than The Witcher games gameplay wise it seems, and it definitely makes sense, it's their first franchise as a well established studio now, a good clean slate to start getting a bit more creative, and if anything fails witcher 4 or whatever can still keep the studio afloat, just in case.

@santi_ago: Behold... an ignorant comment.

CDPR said they would be releasing redkit for TW3, now they say they aren't, it's not a matter of entitlement, it's a matter of keeping your word.

@mkeezay22: Even if they did promise, it's just a freebie addon to the actual product, nobody is getting ripped off or anything.

Totally understandable for someone to be disappointed, but it's unreasonable to get upset and give them crap for it.

@Zjarcal: Which is understandable to a degree until one learns the reason for them doing this. Granted we might not learn know the truth but these people defending their choice about this isn't helping gamers but the companies. I'm just disgusted some people will go to such lengths to defend a group of people, the devs and publishers, that could care less about those who purchase their game and care about mainly profit.

@Zloth2: I agree. CDPR is ultimately a company who needs to turn a profit and so freebies shouldn't be expected, even if they expressed desire to release certain things.

I'll never understand the mod community. They go against the artist's intention with something far fetched. Take your favorite book - now replace a secondary character with a panda.

Pure stupidity.

@Sevenizz: One: Books are not games

Two: Mods keep games alive for years. Also it doesn't go against their vision, in fact some of the stuff we've seen in a lot of games started out as mods.

@Sevenizz: most mods that get famous are poinless, like riding flying whales that poop explosive chicken, but there's plenty of usefull or intreresting mods, for example the ones that modify graphics and interface.

@punnyjokes: You change a game's mode or visual aesthetic. Sometimes it works (Counter Strike) and most of the time it's stupid (a horse driving a car in GTA5).

@Sevenizz: and sometimes it's glorious like in the case of Skyrim. New quality quests, weapons, armors, entire new areas. Weather changes, texture changes, etc. There will always be mods out there that have nothing to do with a game (imagine a lightsaber mod in Witcher 3, that has no place in the game i agree). But you're excluding all of the amazing lore friendly mods that are made by really talented people for zero pay.

Some mods can completely change the game experience for better. Skyrim has loads of combat mods that change up the combat system, the Apocalypse mod adds over 155 new magic spells. I could go on. If the Witcher 3 fully supported mods like Bethesda did, it would be for the better. Why? Because you choose what you want to add, tweak, change, or remove. OR just leave the game vanilla

Some people will clearly never understand how mods work, and how much they can add to a game and even make it more alive, such as some of the comments above. Maybe it's because they never had access to mods, due to playing on a closed platform.

I'm sure the Mona Lisa would look cuter with a smile - let's alter that.

@Sevenizz: I doubt the artists give a ****. The IP holders and publishers MAY.

Also, AFA modding amount goes, there are TOTAL conversions. Most, if not all, the assets are changed.

I think there is a Babylon 5 mod for Homeworld and I doubt anyone cares except the IP owner of B5.

@Sevenizz: You went full retard there...If they give you the tools you can do whatever you want as long as you don't rip models from other games like witcher 2 and so on as long as they are yours. You are not required to play a mod but you have the choice.Mods REALLY give life to a game.If Skyrim got a "9" vanilla it would now get a 11/10 because of mods. And there are really talented people out there that create magnificent things believe me even better than the devs sometimes. The artist made what he wanted to but we have the ok to alter it,now if you want to use it or not it's entirely up to you we are different people after all.

Yes, you've become a big-time company-- that doesn't mean you HAVE to start acting like Ubisoft, Blizzard/Activision or EA.

Be one of the exceptions, look at Bethesda as your influence.
