Witcher 3 Dev Responds to Mod Tools Controversy

"At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Acclaimed open-world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received official modding support this week, but not everyone is happy with the available tools. Released Friday was the "Modkit" for The Witcher 3.

No Caption Provided

It's a toolsuite that allows players to modify the game in a number of crazy ways (check out the image and videos below), but some fans say it's not enough.

Instead, what they were expecting was a new version of CD Projekt Red's "REDkit," a more fleshed out mod tools package that's currently available for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

And for good reason. In a January 2014 interview, CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski said the developer was "looking to release the REDkit sometime after [The Witcher 3] launches for the modding community."

But, when announcing The Witcher 3's Modkit this week, CD Projekt Red admitted that "the modding tools we are releasing are not an editor. They're meant for people who are somewhat experienced with modding software and are designed to make creating mods easier."

Now, CD Projekt Red community manager Marcin Momot has spoken out on Twitter to address the situation. He says the developer has no plans to release a new version of the REDkit for The Witcher 3.

A fan asked, "Any ETA yet for a Full Featured TW3 REDkit? Maybe after the AddOn's? Or is this (no offense) everything we get?" Momot replied: "This is the mod support for the Wild Hunt. At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Plenty of other Witcher 3 players have also taken to Twitter to voice their discontent over the current mod tools. Momot offered the same response as above to all questions about the available mod tools.

only pc gamers would cry over this... not only do they want free games, but they feel as though they are entitled to development tools over and above the base game so that they can do as they please with copyrighted content. can you people be happy with just the game? brats.

@Xristophoros:

I mostly play on console, because I have not gotten around to buying the hardware to make a computer yet, but I still know that being able to mod a game (how it looks as well as how it works) is a very good thing.

It allows one to fix bugs or upgrade the appearance and mechanics of the game should the developer ever stop supporting it, add more content should the developer ever stop making more games in the series, change things that were not so great, and add features that would have been nice to have in the game.

As for wanting free games, The Witcher 3 is not a free game, yet I have not seen anyone ask for it to be.

Please, try to look at it from the consumer's point of view.

However, not from the view of the crying, entitled, bratty consumer that you have probably based on a small amount of extreme responses that you have seen on the internet.

@Xristophoros: Besides Babe's overly abuse response to you your ignorance is astounding. The majority of PC gamers do not agree with the elitist attitude nor do we have any entitlement. Modding allows those to fix and add extra content with no extra fee. Apparently you have this ridiculous notion to hate that even though it benefits console players as well.

@Xristophoros: Who says PC gamers want free games? So we're entitled to wanting a more fleshed out modding toolkit to keep the game we paid for going for years to come? A reason for people to keep coming back again and again. Good mods and good tools can drastically extend the lifespan of a game.

Just look at Skyrim. Thousands of people still playing it 4 years after it was first released because of mods. Fallout New vegas 5 years and still going strong...

So where are all these "protesters" to complain about Creative Assembly and the lies they state with every new game about "full mod support" then the methods they use to lock everything down and then copy ideas

@metalblinga: It could definitely use some texture mods. Leveled list changes, or scaling fixes. The UI could do with an overhaul as even the late changes they made didn't fix its usability much. HUD fixes are already available. If they had better tools available eventually people would be able to create and voice more quests to give you something to do in the end-game.

@illage2: what? shit i got all of that, my point is a game like skyrim had many room for improvement vis a vis, ergo the need for mods.

I honestly couldn't play skyrim without several overhaul mods.

@metalblinga: What is this comment even supposed to bring about? You abusively target another fellow gamer just because he supports more freedom in a game? Regardless of what they want the official modkit for it benefits all gamers not just us on the PC. But you seem to desire to run to the aid of the publishers and some developers instead of those actually on your side.

@megakoresh: Did you try both? One is a lot more quick/responsive (no more running 5 feet after you "stop" ) and the turning/strafing is 10x better and quicker, it's liek a night and day difference compared to the old "momentum" based movement that felt sluggish and not responsive.

@Stiler: Nice, I didn't hear about that. The original movement often felt "jerky" and less than fluid to me. It was tolerable, but made me want to play in shorter sessions. I play with a PS4 controller on PC at 60 fps. This new control type sounds promising and I'll have to check it out.

Well, the console community can't have something as a concern, which they never had in the first place. There's nothing about being fickle regarding this, other than the dishonesty of the developers and delivering something the community could already do to begin with.

What sums up the internet these days, is that a lot of consumers just bend over.

@Thanatos2k: Well it would be more accurate to title it, Man-babies filled with impotent rage over the lack of features in a free mod tool. For a game that is filled with hundreds of hours of content, but I want to participate in the new national pastime, complaining.

Go build your own game, then you can release a mod tool as detailed as you want. Fucking worst generation ever raised by parents who attended the "Who gives a ****" school of parenting.

@yoshiyoshi: Eddie Makuch is master of clickbait news. G$ needs brainwashed traffic. CDPro focus is on TW3 expansion packs. When they will move towards Cyberpunk 2077, they might consider REDKIT. Well CDPR is planning to license out REDengine, but no licensing info has been revealed. For all we know they may go Epic's route and allow complete free non-commercial use of the engine and allow you to use TW3 assets.

@yoshiyoshi: Suggesting there's an outcry when there really isn't one is making news. A couple people whining on Twitter doesn't mean there's a huge backlash, people a couple idiots on Twitter will whine about anything, that's like the purpose of Twitter.

Sites like Gamespot have done it before when it wasn't true. They also very, very selectively decide which "outcries" they will cover. They absolutely do not "just report the news" because some news they refuse to cover and some they twist to push a specific agenda. In fact, we're almost at the anniversary of those particular things.....

Its either because there isn't much of a modding community for it or because they want to exhaust their DLC ideas first, which in that case, it'd be a total shame and a massive letdown.

@Zjarcal: Witcher 2 is not very mod-friendly because it's not an Open World game. Also Redkit didn't allow for, for example, gameplay mods. Full Combat Rebalance is the most that we got and that one only, well... rebalanced it. We couldn't change mechanics or add combos, etc. Also it crashed every 30 minutes. It had a lot of problems.

The Witcher 2 had a lot of incompatibility issues as well, not to mention they barely supported the first RedKit. The modding community was already questioning the support back then.

CDPR never intended to have Witcher 3 to be as moddable as Bethesda games..I don't understand where this is coming from. Witcher 3 isn't a sandbox open world, but a theme park.

I'm sorry. I misread what you said. I totally agree. I originally had Skyrim on PS3 as I did not have a computer, until recently, that could handle more than older games. I mean much older. Skyrim was huge before IMO. With mods it's gigantic.
