Witcher 3 Dev Responds to Mod Tools Controversy

"At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Acclaimed open-world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received official modding support this week, but not everyone is happy with the available tools. Released Friday was the "Modkit" for The Witcher 3.

No Caption Provided

It's a toolsuite that allows players to modify the game in a number of crazy ways (check out the image and videos below), but some fans say it's not enough.

Instead, what they were expecting was a new version of CD Projekt Red's "REDkit," a more fleshed out mod tools package that's currently available for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

And for good reason. In a January 2014 interview, CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski said the developer was "looking to release the REDkit sometime after [The Witcher 3] launches for the modding community."

But, when announcing The Witcher 3's Modkit this week, CD Projekt Red admitted that "the modding tools we are releasing are not an editor. They're meant for people who are somewhat experienced with modding software and are designed to make creating mods easier."

Now, CD Projekt Red community manager Marcin Momot has spoken out on Twitter to address the situation. He says the developer has no plans to release a new version of the REDkit for The Witcher 3.

A fan asked, "Any ETA yet for a Full Featured TW3 REDkit? Maybe after the AddOn's? Or is this (no offense) everything we get?" Momot replied: "This is the mod support for the Wild Hunt. At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Plenty of other Witcher 3 players have also taken to Twitter to voice their discontent over the current mod tools. Momot offered the same response as above to all questions about the available mod tools.

I actually don't give much about mod support. Was never into mods, not even in bethesda games.. Okay, well, maybe the UI mod for Skyrim (and the game-saving mod for Dark Souls lol) but that's it. I somehow don't like it if the game isn't as the Developers created it..

It's interesting when people can't look outside the box that is placed upon their head while opposing to more potential options of what one may do with a product. Redkit for The Witcher 3 also would open up a current tool in the game industry for environmental design with it's terrain/landscape editor. Not to mention all the animation capabilities... A decent amount of modders of games in the past have become game developers themselves. Some talented people out there would prefer incorporate their artistry within a good existing game rather than attempt to start from the ground up. There are game engines like Cryengine, Unity, or UDK but they are all suited for modern FPS gameplay.

I'm just gonna say it and haters can hate if they like. Skyrim was cool and all, but it was way overrated in my opinion. It had nowhere near the depth of The Witcher 3 in terms of meaningful content.

I finished the vanilla skyrim game 3 times with different characters. Spent over 200 hours on it. Enjoyed the hell out of it, before I even touched a mod. By the time I started using mods, I had milked the game so much that I could only muster another 40 or so hours and then I realised how little there really was to do. If not for mods, Skyrim is pretty shallow in terms of content. And yes, I read the books in game and did almost every notable sidequest.

With Witcher 3, every moment felt meaningful. I played about 70 hours on my first run to test the waters, skipping about 5 out of every 6 side quests. I'm super amped for new game plus.

Witcher 3 without mods has the same depth as Skyrim with most of the non lore breaking mods. But it's not a fair comparison because the two games had different goals.

Skyrim set out to be a true sandbox experience and it achieved that really well. You could do whatever the hell you wanted with your mute protagonist, GTA 3 style but with Elder Scrolls lore.

Wirtcher 3 takes a more atmospheric approach, with deep characters and a few impactful choices, set in a rich world supplemented by actual fleshed out novels. It's much more of an emotional cinematic experience. And less about the ability to make everyone naked or add jet packs to it just for fun. Skyrim was always meant to be at the mercy of players, whereas Witcher stands with what it is and if you don't like it then tough.

I like both games. And I love the idea of mods, but everything within reason. Anyway, that's just my opinion. Tired of people comparing Skyrim to Witcher when the only thing they have in common is swords, monsters and large maps. There's a world of difference in all the other aspects. And for me personally, Witcher 3 is much better overall. But that's just because I prefer depth to quantity.

@Tablet999: I've made it a habit of giving Bethesda's games a fairly short once-through so I know what to expect and can appreciate improvements later. Their games tend to be, well let's just say I find "playing the vanilla version" to be quite apropos. Then I wait quite a well before giving it a real play-through loaded up with mods.

I'm finding The Witcher 3 to be a lot more substantive on the first try but it too feels like a second play-through later with some really great mods would really fill some of the holes in it.

@Tablet999: Why write such a long post comparing Skyrim to the Witcher if you are tired of people comparing Skyrim to the Witcher?

For those that don't know. The tool allows you to edit in game assets and make cosmetic changes, you can also add in new assets using base pallets. What you can't do is change any of the value such as weight, potency, etc.

For those that don't know. You don't need a modding tool to mod a game, you can do it yourself. Go take a C++ class and learn some programming.

In all seriousness though, what did you expect? It is a massive open world game, you were never going to be able to change the way the cities look because it could affect the stability of the game and/or disrupt quest/story line progression. Use your brain, it shouldn't just be for show.

@G4mBi7: How about using your brain yourself? This is a pure SP game. If you want to break your game you should be free to do so. And if you know your shit the game works just fine.

Also modders are more capable than you make them here. It's not like only the original developers could code...

@Smakit: So only one of the most overrated games of all time that had nearly to no story and completely relied upon community creations to keep it going. Same with fallout, snooze fest.

You can mod the game without a modkit or "REDKit" if you had the brains to do so, stop complaining about your own idiocy.

@StOoGiEmEiStEr: Are you a modder? If not then how do know so well how possible it is to do so much modding without a official modkit? Also official modkits gives you much more options and freedom because developers do lock certain stuff because they don't release the proper files to modify certain things within the game.

Look at Dragon Age Inquisition it's modifiable but nowhere as near as modifiable as Origins was because there wasn't a official tool released because developers don't want to them to modify it and have access to everything.

Just to quell the rage in the comments section and correct the tone of the article. There's very few people whining at CDPRed. Stop whining about the near-nonexistant whining.

these guys give us a great game and free dlc and a big expansion pack coming out and the public complain about a mod kit really. this is why people don't do nice things. try to do something nice and instead of saying thank you they demand more.

@str81337: My feeling isn't so much that I'm upset by what they're giving us so much as I feel they're losing an opportunity to make a great game so much better. The Witcher 3 has turned out to be much better than I expected (I was afraid they'd gotten in over their heads). But it's not a perfect game and there are plenty of small things that could make a world of difference. Maybe those things are doable with what they're giving us, but if not, it's kind of a shame.

@str81337:Sounds more like some people are disappointed because this isn't what they expected based on what they'd seen CDPR say previously, and some are upset because they feel misled. CDPR probably should've corrected and clarified this whenever the plans changed.

CDPR is alright, but not infallible. When it screws up it deserves to be criticized for it the same as any other company. This is arguably a minor screwup (as CDPR is still releasing some mod tools, limited as they may be, and relatively few were aware of that 1.5 year old statement in that one interview) but it's a PR/communications screwup nonetheless.

CDPR trying to sell you an expansion is not a nice thing. More like standard business practice.

Console only crowd is even worse than the PC crowd. Only console idiots would defend a developer against fellow consumers for calling them out on their lies. I swear man, console gamers have just become nothing but idiots. Compare playing CoD back in CoD 4 when it first released to playing CoD now. Hell compare any multiplayer game to it's PC counterpart, and the PC community is always a million times better.

I'm not a fanboy, but geez the console tards are unreal.

@twisted_outlaw: Yer it's sad , i steer well away from the fanboys in the Console community , rife with ignorance , not even worth my time explaining things to them when they will respond with busted myths and abuse like "STFU kid Consol way betterz cos i said but i have no facts to back it I am right so PC sucks" .

Just leave them to their own undoing i say.

@illage2: if you refer mods as bringing viruses then yes, it could be called an argument. Now, hard fact is that mods bring ad- and malware, and of course spyware.

@phili878: I must have downloaded over a thousand mods from various sites, for various games, and I've never had any of those problems. Maybe the problem is not the modding scene, but your lack of discretion in choosing where to get yours from?
