After months of delays, Windows 2000 has finally gone gold and, according to Microsoft, is now in the manufacturing process. The operating system represents the incorporation of Windows NT's stability and 32-bit performance with the DirectX features of Win95/98 and was touted at Gates' Comdex keynote address as a forward step in Internet computing.

"Today's completion of Windows 2000 represents a phenomenal team effort and would not be possible without the amazing contributions from our employees, customers, and partners across the industry," said Microsoft VP Jim Allchin.

Windows 2000 is on schedule for a mid-February 2000 release.
