Will Disney Make R-Rated Marvel Movies? CEO Weighs In

Fox's R-rated super hero movie Deadpool was a huge hit and Batman v Superman may get an R-rated home video cut, so you might be wondering if Disney would follow suit with its own adult-oriented Marvel movies. That's not going to happen, at least not anytime soon, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger.

"We don't have any plans to make R-rated Marvel movies," Iger said during a call with shareholders today, as reported by Polygon.

Given that children and families are typically Disney's core audiences, Iger's comments aren't very surprising. All of Disney's Marvel Universe movies to date have been rated PG-13 (via CBR), and Iger's comments today make it clear that's pattern is not going to end anytime soon.

No Caption Provided

After Deadpool's huge success (it's made $600 million-plus to date), much speculation emerged about what other superhero properties will embrace the more restrictive rating. Just recently, X-Men universe producer Simon Kinberg said he thinks the X-Men films will continue to be rated PG-13, but X-Force could get an R rating.

Additionally, images related to the upcoming Wolverine 3 indicated the action movie was anticipating being rated R.

Doesn't really matter. Deadpool is Deadpool/of course R rated if you go by the source material. Other super heroes not so much and technically Deadpool isn't a super hero. As for Disney making R rated films in general, what have they done in the R rated category? I certainly can't remember nor can a lot of people as Disney is Disney.

I've enjoyed most of the Marvel movies at their current ratings. If I didn't like the movie, changing the rating to R from PG-13, usually wouldn't make me enjoy the movie any more. That said, I think the bigger concern is the possibility of the "Deadpool" sequel lowering it's rating to PG-13. I read an interview from the crew recently, and they were actually excited about the possibility of Deadpool being restricted to less gore/nudity, and less swearing. That's got me nervous, since Deadpool is an anti-hero, so he isn't meant to be as clean as Captain America or Thor.

Oh, good lord...Why can't people just realize Deadpool was successful because it's a genuinely good R-rated property (not so much the movie, but in general)? It works for Deadpool. This doesn't mean everything should suddenly become R-rated.

@Barighm: It's not like they have to make a movie specifically aimed at being rated R.. why not just make the movie like it's supposed to be without minding the rating it will get?

That's fine, the more R rated heroes Disney has are getting TV shows which so far have been more adult oriented than the films anyway. It kind of works out.

@myhomieyoda:

This is totally true! Tank Girl, The Crow: City of Angels and Barb Wire were SO much better than Iron Man, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2 and X-Men DOFP. It's like night and day.

@myhomieyoda: Actually, a lot of the best movies recently have been G-rated. Granted, that's because those movies tend to earn well, so they tend to get better writers and filmmakers attached to them.

@myhomieyoda: Not always. Alien Vs Predator: Requiem was R, and it was worse than its predecessor, which was PG-13.

It's so frustrating that people want to suddenly hop on this bandwagon with hating on R-rated movies.

"Movies don't need to be rated R to be good!"

So......what, there's something wrong with R-rated movies now? What, we're devolving culturally? I like R-rated movies because I hate when I feel like something is being held back or watered down, I want the full-blown experience.

@Fartman7998: I can partially agree with you, as some movies do in fact get held back and watered down: Die Hard 4. Movie was PG-13 in theaters, but they filled it as an R rated movie and then went back and edited out everything to bring it down to PG-13 level. Thankfully, the DVD release had the option to watch it as it was intended to be seen in its R-rated version.

But not all movies are necessarily held back like this. I don't think Ghostbusters was ever intended to be R-rated, and it's one of my most favorite movies of all time.

@jasonlc3221: Wasn't Ghostbusters rated PG?

I'm not saying that all movies are held back, but I don't think people realize just how finicky the rating system is, it affects a lot of how a movie is made. Not to mention that studios often control creative aspects of movies, taking away from what the director wants to show, hence the director's cuts. I guess what I'm wondering is why anybody bothers to defend PG-13 movies. What's the point in defending against R-rated movies, what did they ever do to you? Did your parents keep you from watching them, and now you're just spiteful against them? Haha. Ever since Deadpool, people are just coming out of the woodwork, complaining that they don't want more R-rated movies. I wanna tell them to grow up, I get tired of family friendly entertainment sometimes. I want something that's on my maturity level (well, maturity depending on your definition of the word).

Deadpool was expected to be R rated because of it's original source content. The same isn't expected of the Marvel movies for the samereason.
Otherwise it would be force fed and be R just for the sake of it, and will likely be bad...

I think it's best if they don't upscale or downscale, the themes and violence etc. Just stick close to the source, that's what most originally fell in love with. Change that, and you get uproar :/ *cough* DragonBall Evolution *cough*

We are all entitled to our own opinions, but the fact of the matter is that a movie doesn't need to be rated r to be good. I love great violent r rated action movies (hello the raid! and kill bill!) but this is disney here. They don't think about just the ratings of the movies, they make properties that are tied into other things like merchandise too. It would be kind of hilarious if they made a r rated comic book movie and sold disney infinity toys for it though haha.

I would love to see an R-rated Marvel movie, but I don't want to see R for the sake of R. Give a movie the rating that the universe warrants rather than trying to force R-rated material in for the sake of hitting that mark. A movie like Captain America doesn't warrant an R-Rating, but another like Iron Man could because the main character is a womanizing lush to begin with.

I think sudden change of style mid-series could be pretty jarring. But I will be dissapointed if Infinity Wars is as light happyjokejoke as these other Marvel movies

In the end makers should just do what feels right. Even if DP benefit from R it doesn't mean every movie out there must turn into R. It's the same thing when vampire movies were everywhere and then later zombies. Or WW2.

@Hagan: Pretty sure that is an AoU poster, you know since there is no WS, nor Black Panther in it to lead anyone to think it was from Cap 3 and not Avengers, I mean Hulk isn't in Cap 3. Process of elimination friend.

That sucks. Would have been cool to get some R-Rated ones. I guess we can just depend on Fox to deliver us some R-Rated ones.
