Wii browser gets full version

Final edition of Opera's Internet Channel offers more functions; available for free from the Wii Store Channel through June 30.

Wii disc drives glowed an eerily pulsating blue overnight to inform users that a new download was available, as Opera's Wii Web browser graduated from beta to final version. The new version of the browser includes a handful of fresh features and tweaks to existing options aimed at improving users' Web-surfing experiences.

New features include a built-in search function that can be configured to utilize the user's search engine of choice, and a revised scrolling function that lets users "click-and-drag" with the Wii Remote in order to see different sections of a Web page. Nintendo is also touting the browser's faster start-up time, improved ability to keep text legible when zooming in or out, and the ability to hide the toolbar, giving users more space for their Web pages.

The final version of the Wii browser will be a free download through June 30. After that time, it will cost new users 500 Wii Points ($5) to get the program.

"sux i don't have wii on the net yet. $5 for a web browser... nickle & dimin'." You don't? If you have cable for your computer, pick up a WiFi USB Connector from EBGames/Gamestop/etc. If you use McAfee you'll have to set your firewall to Open whenever you want to connect, but it's not that hard to do. Works just fine, it's how I get my Wii connected to the 'net.

"Why are people complaining about something FREE?" Because it's a timed offer for a system most people will not be able to find in a store until well after you've got to pay for the browser.

The new browser works better and is more robust. I really like how Nintendo has implemented web browsing for the wii beyond what anybody else has ever done due to control inadequacies. The wiimote is even better than a mouse and keyboard if you're in a sofa while browsing. It's great to be able to eat watching youtube instead of normal TV. Now get us Quicktime or WMV support on tht thing and keep improving flash support and we'll have the first Web 2.0 enabled console ever. And they said it wasn't next gen.

I can't believe how many people are saying "I was wondering why my Wii was glowing today" and didn't even bother to check their messages. Do you guys EVEN KNOW what the point of Wiiconnect24 is?

The final version of the browser is pretty decent and solves most of the issues I had with the beta. Good stuff but get it before they ask you to pay $5.

Stupid thing woke me up this morning... I was pissed. Then I stayed up to try it out, and it's still useless. EDIT: And for the people wishing it was Firefox, Opera was used because they've got more experience with coding browsers for varied environments, as well as the fact that Opera is the most secure browser available.

Link1515 "I agree with Nmandude, It should've been Firefox, and not Opera." Well actually even though i like firefox better for the pc, Opera is a much better choice for the wii. The poeple at opera have great experience coding opera to work on all types of machines including pdas, cellphones, and computers. I dont belive firefox ever xpanded past the pc/mac/linux etc.

Can you hook up a USB keyboard to the Wii or are you limited to using the remote and an onscreen keyboard?

Considering the Web Browser is an additional software not necessary for the Wii experience, I can understand charging $5 to help with production costs however it is not in the best interests of the consumer. Nintendo is doing an excellent job bringing out updates remarkably fast.

Why are people complaining about something FREE? If I'm sitting down and just got done playing a game and my comp is shut off then i will use the Wii to surf the net. Sure surfing the net is better on the comp but it still works on this system, so don't complain and talk it down untill you have to PAY for it.

It was an eerie glow that I had never seen before and it was at the same time, the coolest S*#t I had seen on my Wii in a while. I only wish there were more times the light would be on. It was odd for me as I work nights, came home to a dark home and there was this bright blue glow coming from my gaming area, one I had never seen before. I actually looked it up on the Nintendo.com forums as I was afraid someting was wrong with my Wii like the 360 red ring of death I had witnessed several times.

I think Opera was a fine choice of a browser to use with the Wii, but the fact that it will cost $5 after June 30th bothers me.

its for people that either don't have a computer at all or dont have one they can acess when ever they want. ie kids. Think about it. having acess to the internet in your room thought your tv make it easy to acess. if i did not have a lap top in my room i would want this update. 360 bet sort somthing out cos im getting impatient. wii has a browser and 360 doesn't. what is the world coming to.

At Rickettsz0780: PC's can already do ALL of that stuff, so why would we need to do that on a console? Computers are what run this planet, and that fact is not going to change any time soon. They will be an important feature right through our lives, and their functionality will not be beaten by a games console.

"how long are do you think people are going to keep using a computer before they can just use their tv for the internet movies games and soon a telephone" That is probably one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. TVs and computers are two completely different technologies: one display, and one computation. That's like saying clocks are going to be replaced by toaster ovens. Maybe you meant to say that traditional LCD monitors will be replaced by TVs, and that homes will move towards a centralized display? i think he meant that you could do everything with consoles on your tv.

Pretty cool download but I really don't want to use my Wii for net browsing. Now if they added some VC games with online functionality like an online Bomberman then I would be a bit more excited. Still it is a nice download nonetheless.

My Wii is right next to my PC but it doesn't change the fact that the browser is really good. Now, if only Sony could do something with the PSP browser.
