Why Need for Speed: Rivals is skipping Wii U

Creative director Craig Sullivan cites weak sales of Need for Speed: Most Wanted on Wii U as reason to skip over Nintendo's latest home console.

Need for Speed: Rivals is not coming to Wii U. According to Ghost Games creative director Craig Sullivan, that's in part due to weak sales of the Wii U version of Need for Speed: Most Wanted, which was a launch title for the platform in November 2012.

"It didn't really sell that many, in terms of the Wii U market. I would love for it to have, because we put so much effort into that, trust me," Sullivan told The Sixth Axis. "I'd love for it to be way bigger than it was, and the same for the [PlayStation Vita]."

"[Rivals] is going onto new hardware, and you have to work out where you focus your efforts," he added. "The 200 people working on this game are only capable of making so much, and doing so many different versions of the game, so we had to go with where we think the biggest audience will be for the game, and that's where we are."

Ghost Games studio owner Electronic Arts shipped four games for Wii U: Mass Effect 3, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, FIFA 13, and Madden NFL 13. In May, EA confirmed it had no new games in development for the system. By comparison, EA shipped 74 games for the original Wii.

Need for Speed: Rivals launches in November for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC.

"the hardware is better, if only because it uses newer hardware instead of better hardware"

So, yay? I guess.

WiiU has modern hardware, but it still doesn't have more power, it simply is made more reliably.

okey lets try this , people who buys wii u is mostly buying console with classic 2-3D mixed family fun games and these kinda games are ( never will ) not selling on the console. Thats why they dont make game for it because it didnt sell in the past and they predict it will never sell in the future.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's got nothing to do with the hardware which is what you suggested was the problem in your orginal post. Also third party games can be successful on the Wii U. You'll see that with Mario and Sonic at the Sochi Winter Olympics and depending on how Ubisoft utilise the Gamepad for Watchdogs and whether or not they'll gimp the game for the Wii U, that could be a bigger seller as well.

Also look at how well Capcom's Monster Hunter 3 has done on Nintendo consoles and Monster Hunter 4 is selling very well in Japan on the 3DS, so it's a myth that third party games don't sell on Nintendo consoles.

Can't blame them really, if it doesn't sell then you can't make more and lose money.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's their own fault for releasing a few gimped ports on the Wii U. I'd imagine a lot of gamers who bought these gimped ports weren't going to buy Need for Speed Most Wanted U.

@dogbert784 I know that GTA V has shifted more units 8million + on the PS3 compared to the Last of Us which has shifted 3-4 million + units to date. Sony and Microsoft rely on third party developers and publishers to sell their hardware. Nintendo's first party games sells its hardware.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Nintendo is different to Microsoft and Sony in the sense that Nintendo first and second party software sells their hardware where as Microsoft and Sony rely on third party support. A lot of third party developers cannot compete with Nintendo franchises on Nintendo consoles and so back off from Nintendo hardware altogether, but I reckon third party games can achieve success on Nintendo formats providing they appeal to the Nintendo fan base and aren't gimped or delayed so they can appear on other platforms.

Delayed the game release and released so long after other versions have established a peak number of buyers, of course you can't expect a great sales return from the Wii U version.

And from what I heard, a lot of people seem to be confused with the NFS Wii U Second Screen feature...

<< LINK REMOVED >> Confused with the second screen feature? Why on earth would anyone be confused by the Gamepad? All it does is enable you to change your car at the touch of a button, distrupt the cops, display the map and turn traffic on and off, I fail to see how the second screen would confuse anyone?

<< LINK REMOVED >> I get it as well, we get it as well. But the people seem to hold back because of the 2-player mode with the second screen and the Wiimote. I kinda like the idea, but a lot of people just shrug of and say nothing actually new.

They've changed the goal posts, I'm sure I read an article which states that EA are not bringing NFS Rivals or Battlefield 4 to the Wii U due to the Frostbite 3 engine being too complex to reconfigure for the Wii U. Any road if this is the real reason that EA and its friends aren't bringing this game out on the Wii U then fair enough. NFS Most Wanted U which is supposedly the definitive version of the game didn't sell particularly well, only shifting around 200,000 copies out of install base which stood at 3 million, so I don't blame them. No point flushing money down the toilet on a product that probably won't sell. Wii U gamers seem to dislike EA immensely as shown by the poor sales of all their games across the platform as a whole.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't think WiiU gamers can afford the liberty of disliking anyone.

Culture of the world to hate people who don't give you things, WiiU has not earned games, neither did Wii or the gamecube or the N64. Nintendo has not been nice to or for the the third party in over a decade, almost two.

They promote their own games and force third party to cover too much cost, while simultaneously making development very expensive.

<< LINK REMOVED >> All of what you say may well be valid, I did read about the shoddy treatment Nintendo dealt to Rockstar when they were named DMA during the N64 era where allegedly Nintendo made them make several changes to a handful of IP's and then dropped those IP's from the N64 altogether. And one my main criticisms of Nintendo has always been their frosty relationship with third party developers for the large part.

However Wii U gamers have every right to choose what they will and will not purchase and I have to say that I have not bought a lot of third party games for the Wii U based on the fact they were buggy, rushed ports which were gimped or they were games that I am not interested in.

I will buy the games I want to buy as will all other Wii U gamers.

And they also did that with the SNES. I'd say they're more neutral than mean or anything. But if you do quality work like Retro and Platinum games, Nintendo recognizes it and will do everything they can to help make a game.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I agree and disagree.

They do appreciate quality work, but there is a mainstream that Nintendo needs to be a part of to be a force in the gaming world.

Quality work that is internal is rewarded but Nintendo made systems that were greatly out of synch... those that worked within that system were benefited and grew because of it, but as N was no longer a dominant force they did not facilitate the changing landscape. Even with that, N supported their own efforts far more, and game developers that were a part of each generation struggled to compete against N's own shelf space and promotion departments.
Retro and Platinum have each remained small companies, and not done well against mario and the like.

But as a gamer, I want a great Nintendo console... and I don't feel I have one. Can't keep telling myself maybe the next system or the one after that.
