Why Battlefield V Is Named With A Roman Numeral

This is why.

The Battlefield franchise does not normally use Roman numerals for its titling convention, but that's changing this year with the World War II game Battlefield V. But why? The official Battlefield Twitter account has the answer--and it fits with the game's WWII theme.

The "V" is connected to the V sign, which stands for "V for Victory." UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who led Britain during WWII, helped popularised this for the Allied forces.

Now Playing: Battlefield 5: The Biggest Changes And New Gameplay

"[The V sign] represents 'V for Victory,'" the Battlefield Twitter account said. "The phrase and sign were popularised by Winston Churchill and used amongst the allies for much of WWII. It's also why we chose to use the Roman numeral V instead of the number 5 for the title."

In other news about shooter games and Roman numerals, Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is officially titled as "Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII" and not "Call of Duty: Black Ops IV." As it turns out, both IIII and IV are recognised as accurate, according to the curator of the British Museum.

Battlefield V launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Origin on October 19. It will be available in both standard and Deluxe editions; those who purchase the latter will get access to the game three days early, on October 16.

Additionally, EA/Origin Access subscribers can start playing a trial on October 11, which is notable because that is one day before Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launches on October 12. Prior to its release, EA will also hold an open beta for Battlefield V later this year. Additionally, EA plans to talk more about the game at E3 next month.

@og_gamerzzz: Are you kidding me? I'm an X soldier. Just retired from the 101st a couple years ago. Last I checked 101st Airborne Troopers jumped into battle with just very that. Mowhawks and face paint. Even notorious pictures of it on the net. Don't talk about what you clearly have no idea of. How do you know what the resistance fighters wore if you never done your god damn research?

What I think is that people like your self are just whining little dirtbags hating on this because you see an opportunity to hate on SJW. But you literally are here lying on the god damn net about history you know nothing about. Do your research or stfu bro.

@legendaryh1tman: I think a lot of folks saying they want this game to look like real WW2 really just want it to look like Hollywood WW2 they have nostalgia for. They watched Saving Private Ryan, and Band of Brothers, and then played all the old WW2 shooters that were trying to capture the look and feel of those movies, so now they think that's the authentic WW2 experience. When more accurately it's the version of the WW2 experience that was palatable 15-20 years ago.

@Mogan: Not an excuse for how ignorant they are. When the facts are out there.

DICE also is ignorant for not explaining this in their trailer reveal. So the bulk of negative response is partly their fault. They could of explained why a woman and resistance fighters are here and what actually also took place during WW2 but they just threw everybody into the deep end expecting a warm welcome. smh bad move obviously this is gonna hurt their sales no doubt.

What they need to do, is create a new video and talk about a brief history of the Resistance fighters of WW2. Then go into their game showing how you get to play their stories and what new gameplay mechanics they brought to the table. They think they are as popular as COD but nah not there yet. This just set them back.

@legendaryh1tman: Ehh, DICE has E3 and a zillion other trailers, tweets, and reveals to break down how Battlefield V is really historically sensitive (or not). I don't know that they need to worry too much about that in the initial teaser. I get the impression the video we've seen was there to establish tone and style (like that live action Rage 2 teaser everybody hated) and not represent what the game's actual content will be.

@weFest0507: I think GS's point is that all other Battlefield games have used normal numbers; Battlefield 1, Battlefield, 2, 3 and 4.

Well this is completely from the point of view of a non fanboy of either BF or CoD. I just play them casually for their unique gameplay styles.

I dont get whats up with all the hate for this game. I agree the trailer looks pretty bad considering the quality trailers they published for previous entries, especially BF3. As it seems EA is trying to make money out of in-game cosmetic items, it still does not bother me. As far as I am concerned if the base game does not have any of those & it feels authentic WW2, I would still buy it. I know I am not going to spend my $$ on silly cosmetics.

BTW no matter how bad the trailer is, the graphics and gameplay looks litt. So people who have money only for the base game, rejoice as you will be able to get good WW2 experience, hopefully. And people who have lot of money to buy in-game stuff, well to each our own i guess.

Also I hate Cod for taking away SP. No matter how bad IW was, its SP was good and worth giving a try.

Hopefully this post helps someone out there. :)

Well, whatever it is, it's not WW2. It's some steampunk alternate reality game. But a sincere question i have, is they're up to like 350k dislikes on the You Tube trailer at roughly 8 million views. Infinite Warfail was only at 180k dislikes at 7 mil views.

I guess i'm just wondering if this can beat Infinite Warfail as most disliked trailer?

@Mogan: I don't know about any of that but my point is that BFV is going to sell millions despite the controversy and in fact may sell even more copies in spite of it.

Annnnd that's the cringeworthy EA we all know and love.

They are trying oh so very hard.

"Hay guys it's 'V' and not '5' for super duper important reasons. "

If you want inclusion in a shooter its probably best if you stick to the modern setting where women can be found across all branches of the military in combat roles.

*Looks at Youtube trailer and sees dislike bar greatly outnumbering the likes*

Ahh I get it now. EA and DICE are in full damage-control mode. You can't thump your chest and claim to be immersive and historically accurate only to throw that all away and call your fan base sexist, misogynist, racists for your historical inaccuracies that ruin the immersion.

Much like Star Wars, I can actually survive without Battlefield.

Wow, surprised to see them suddenly pushing the historical accuracy now that they pretty much through it out the window. I have no problem playing as a woman ina game like this. But I do when it’s a game in a series that use to be seen as one of the more realistic shooters that kept things pretty historically accurate looking. Such as in battlefield Vietnam. If you were on the Vietcong side, then it was naturally expected that your character was a Vietnamese soldier. I though Battlefield 1 did a fine job of including diversity within the confines of history by including the Harlem Hellfighters and Russian women snipers. I wouldn’t have any problem with this if they simply made it a modern setting. It just looks weird to have all of this and claim it’s a WWII shooter.

I think it's ironic that they are ising Churchill to promote a WWII game with women in it when he was such an opponent to women on the battlefield.

The idea of women entering the line of battle and fighting in war is revolting to us. The whole civilisation of the western world is based upon the traditions of chivalry which have come down from medieval times and still exert a potent force.”
