Here's Why This Key Avengers: Infinity War Trailer Scene Was Missing

It is common for movie trailers to include footage that doesn't feature in the final film, especially if they are released while the movies are still in post-production. However, lately there have been some examples of key shots that were created specifically for trailers, that were never intended for the movies themselves. Last year's Spider-Man: Homecoming featured a couple and it has now been confirmed that the most famous shot in the Avengers: Infinity War's first trailer was also created just for the promo. Warning, Infinity War spoilers below.

The footage in question is the shot of various heroes, including Captain America, Black Panther, Hulk, and Black Widow, in Wakanda, racing towards the camera. But not only is this shot not in the movie, Hulk doesn't even appear past his showdown with Thanos near the start of the film. Co-director Joe Russo has now confirmed that the scene was made specifically for the trailer--presumably to create a cool shot that showed all the heroes together.

"That shot that you're referencing was never in the movie in the version that you saw," he told the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "It was never even created for the movie in that version. It was literally created in that version for the trailer."

Russo went on to talk about his and his brother Anthony's approach to making trailers. "We use all the material that we have at our disposal to create a trailer," he said. "We look at the trailer as a very different experience than the movie, and I think audiences are so predictive now that you have to be very smart about how you craft a trailer because an audience can watch a trailer and basically tell you what's gonna happen in the film.

"We consume too much content. So at our disposal are lots of different shots that aren't in the movie that we can manipulate through CG to tell a story that we want to tell specifically for the purpose of the trailer and not for the film."

There is also some dialogue in the Infinity War trailer that does not occur in the movie, namely Thanos' line: "Fun isn't something one considers when balancing the universe, but this does put a smile on my face." In this case, Russo revealed that the dialogue did exist in the script, but was changed in post-production.

"We replaced [that line with] another line that we thought was a little more specific to the storytelling with Gamora," he said. "I think he used to say that on Nowhere to Gamora when he emerged from the Reality Cloak as the aether exposed him. And I think we changed it to something that was a little more specific to the storytelling."

Avengers: Infinity War continues to dominate the box office. After posting the biggest-ever opening weekend, the movie has now crossed $1 billion globally, making it the fastest movie in history to make the mark. In total, Infinity War has now made $1.16 billion worldwide to date. The movie opens in China--the second-biggest movie market on the planet--on May 11, so box office results only stand to improve further this week.
