Watch Robot-Dog Do the Dishes, Preview the Impending Obsolescence of Mankind

Meet SpotMini.

Google-owned robotics company Boston Dynamics today revealed the latest addition to its lineup of robot-dogs--and this one can do the dishes (sort of).

Say hello to SpotMini, the smallest version of Boston Dynamics' line of dog-like "Spot" robots. As you can see in the video, SpotMini has enough situational awareness to walk through a dining room without interrupting you. It can also crouch down to walk under the table.

In one particularly frightening/amazing sequence, SpotMini grabs a glass out of the sink and puts it into the dishwasher. It also picks up a soda can and deposits it in the recycling bin. A peek into the future where you're a worthless meatbag? Maybe.

Also in the video, SpotMini slips on banana peels that some terrible person left strewn about at the bottom of a staircase. After crashing to the floor, SpotMini composes itself and gets right back up. Amazingly, it then proceeds to walk up a staircase. Well done.

SpotMini weighs 55lbs (65lbs if the arm is included), and is all-electric. It can run for around 90 minutes on a single charge, though varies based on what it's doing. The robot-dog can perform some tasks autonomously, though human guidance is often needed. Boston Dynamics did not say what in the video was done autonomously and what was not.

"SpotMini is one of the quietest robots we have ever built," Boston Dynamics said. "It has a variety of sensors, including depth cameras, a solid state gyro (IMU), and proprioception sensors in the limbs. These sensors help with navigation and mobile manipulation."

Boston Dynamics is a New England company that builds "advanced robots" that aim to change your perception of what robots are capable of. They work with organizations from around the world, including the US Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, as well as Sony Corporation and DARPA.

Google acquired Boston Dynamics in December 2013.
