The hit DC series The Flash returns to TV screens this week, alongside debuting spinoff Legends of Tomorrow. Both shows are broadcast on The CW, who have released two new trailers. Check them out below:

Legends of Tomorrow occupies the same universe as The Flash and Arrow, the CW's other DC series, and features a variety of heroes and villains from both shows. It focuses upon a team put together by wise-cracking time traveller Rip Hunter to stop the immortal supervillain Vandal Savage from taking over the world. The group is made up of Captain Cold, Heatwave, and Firestorm from The Flash, Atom and White Canary from Arrow, and the newly introduced Hawkman and Hawkgirl.

The Flash is currently at the mid-point of season two. The show was itself a spinoff from Arrow, with star Grant Gustin first portraying fast-footed Barry Allen in the second season of the Green Arrow show. The popularity of these appearances led CW executives to commission a standalone Flash series, with the 2014 pilot becoming the second highest premiere in the channel's history.

Despite the acclaim that Gustin has received for his performance, he will not be reprising the character for the movie version of the Flash that is set for a 2018 release. The CW's DC universe is separate from the one being developed by Warner for the big screen, where Ezra Miller has been cast in the role.

The Flash's mid-season premiere will be broadcast on January 19, 2016, while Legends of Tomorrow debuts on January 21.
