The wildly over-the-top violence of the Warhammer 40,000 universe will once again come to life in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, the upcoming second expansion to 2004's acclaimed Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. That's a lot of Warhammer, and the expansion will introduce new playable factions, as well as new units for existing factions. In our continuing examination of some of the new units, we take a look at the heavy weapons team. Dark Crusade is coming out in October.

Heavy Weapons Team

The heavy weapons team is the squad that the Imperial Guard call in whenever extra firepower is needed. Armed with heavy weapons that must be setup before firing, the team can stabilize a front line by providing defense against armored vehicles and other large targets. However, the heavy weapons are unavailable if the team is on the move, at which point they must rely on their standard-issue lasguns. Still, if you can get a heavy weapons team in place, it can spell the difference between defeat and victory.

In terms of weapons, the heavy weapons team can bring to bear a heavy bolter, a lascannon, and an autocannon, which should be enough to deal with a wide variety of targets. And once a team is dug in, it's protected from most incoming fire, which means a heavy weapons team is tough to dislodge.

Combat Abilities
The main combat ability of the heavy weapons team is the ability to entrench. When entrenched, the team has excellent defensive cover and can employ all the weapons at its disposal. It takes several seconds for a heavy weapons team to entrench, though, and the team is very vulnerable during this process.
