Warcraft Movie Review Roundup

Warcraft comes out on June 10.

Ahead of the film's release this week, reviews for Legendary's upcoming Warcraft movie have shown up online--and not everyone enjoyed it.

We've collected excerpts from some of the reviews here and will continue to update this post as new ones come online.

Warcraft was directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code), who previously said he has plans for two further films. When the movie comes out in the US, we'll have a better idea of if the critical reviews have any impact on box office performance.

The film stars Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Robert Kazinsky, and Toby Kebbell. It hits theaters on June 10.

Head to GameSpot sister site Metacritic for a further breakdown of Warcraft's critical reception.

It's not the first video game movie this year and it won't be the last. Animated movies based on Ratchet & Clank and Angry Birds came out earlier this year, while Assassin's Creed opens in December.

  • Film: Warcraft
  • Distributor: Universal
  • Release Date: June 10
  • Rating: PG-13

GameSpot

"Warcraft is crafted for the enjoyment of its video game fans. The Warcraft universe serves as more than just tacked-on references in this fantasy film, it is the heart of its story, characters, and cinematic style. It is unfortunate that despite its faithful recreation of the game, several solid weaknesses prevent it from being a well-rounded film. Still, there are plenty of moments for Warcraft fans to geek out over. And if the ending is anything to go by, there may be many more of these to come, for better or worse." -- Zorine Te [Full review]

CNET

"Warcraft lacks that special something. The lore from the franchise is so rich, brought to life in the games by such fine narrative detailing, that it's impossible to look at the film as anything other than a letdown." -- Aloysius Low [Full review]

Kotaku

"Rather than tapping into the goofy core that makes a game like World of Warcraft interesting, the Warcraft movie aims for grittiness, missing the mark quite a bit. It just doesn't work. The lore is too campy. This is a world where a mage's most popular spell transforms his enemies into sheep, yet Warcraft acts as if it's a green-screen version of Game of Thrones. At my theater, the biggest laughs came not from the occasional bouts of slapstick comedy but from the miserable archmages of Dalaran, whose CGI-enhanced eyes look especially absurd when you're supposed to take them seriously." -- Jason Schreier [Full review]

The Wrap

"Critics throw the term 'soulless corporate filmmaking' around with abandon, but movies like Warcraft really manage to redefine the term. A film adaptation of the hugely popular MMORPG (that’s Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) World of Warcraft, this latest video game adaptation ranks near the bottom of the deadly genre. Imagine Battlefield Earth without the verve, or the unintentional comedy, and you've got Warcraft." -- Alonso Duralde [Full review]

No Caption Provided

Variety

"Hollywood's habit of turning hit video games into unwatchable movies continues unabated. The epic battle at the center of Warcraft isn't the clash between humans and orcs. That's just what takes up roughly two hours of screen time. The true conflict comes from filmmakers trying to tell a story with soul and struggling against the inherent ridiculousness of the commodity they're working with. It shouldn't take a mage to foresee that this pricey and preposterous adaptation of an online gaming phenomenon was preordained for artistic mediocrity." -- Geoff Berkshire [Full review]

The Hollywood Reporter

"If you haven’t already invested in the self-serious mythology, it can feel borderline camp, if not downright dull--or both, as when an uncredited Glenn Close intones platitudes from on high about darkness and light. Yet there’s no question that it’s a breakthrough in both storytelling and artistry for features based on video games. And compared with another medieval-ish tale, the soporific Hobbit trilogy, this international production is a fleet and nimble ride, likely to conquer overseas box offices and make a solid stand stateside." -- Sheri Linden [Full review]

Although I think the movie looks weak and I doubt I would enjoy it, I see a lot of references to WoW in the reviews collected above as well as implications that the games serve as an absurd premise for a movie. Perhaps I'm imagining the Warcraft games I played before WoW existed. And I don't agree that the source material dooms it to fail - games, including the Warcraft universe, have rich lore that often has plenty of potential for a good movie. Just seems like the right directing/producing usually doesn't happen

@xantufrog: It has its issues, but its actually a good movie. Best characters are the orks. Nicely fleshed out and not just "evil plot device".

But your own admission it is a flawed movie LOL. Leave to a mindless Blizzard fanboy to ignore the flaws and enjoy whatever Blizzard throws at them, even if it's rotting wolf feces.

@wiser: Virtually every movie ever made is flawed. I'm sorry that you have such an empty life that all you can do is waste time picking at things' flaws.

I watched this movie yesterday with my family. It was awesome. I appreciated it as a fan and they did as well even though they know nothing of the source material. Also I love how critics keep comparing this movie to World of Warcraft when this is clearly a re-imagining of Warcraft 1 etc..... I'm glad I never listen to them and see for myself. Otherwise I would have missed out on a great movie!

Warcraft got mostly positive reviews in EU. In norway it got 5/6 4/6 4/6 4/6 from the biggest sites, the critics in US really just feels like they already decided to hate the movie before going in watching it.

Besides the mix of fan who go into the theater thinking "I WANT TO LIKE THIS", I feel as if WarCraft is the same as when someone tells a bad or incomplete joke. Some people in the room get it because they can figure out what the joke teller meant, they nod and say "oh yeah...." but that doesn't make it a good joke. It might also be like when someone tries to make lo mein, but they use spaghetti and ketchup. Everyone sits down and they say "wow, I get it, this is delicious" because they very vaguely understand the chef wanted to make something that they couldn't, but no one wants to be rude when really they think "this is not lo mein."

@EcksTheory: Resident Evil, Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider all score higher from critics and fans alike. Even Prince of Persia scored higher from most critics. Silent Hill. Mortal Combat. We have to put our nerd-pride aside here.

As a film fanatic: Eehh, could have been better.
It's a film made by a fan to be watched by fans, period.

@EcksTheory: Maybe because of its nerdiness? The film celebrates its game roots and nerdiness without compromises, that's rarely seen in films nowadays.

I haven't seen the movie and probably wont until it's hidden on late night cable with a showing right after Starship Troopers. However i did play WC3 and WoW enough to understand the lore / characters.

Warcraft as a series has too much lore to ever make the transition from video games to movies. Which gives two options. Cut down all the lesser characters and make it easier to follow for non-informed audience, or keep loyal to the lore and make the fans happy. There's just not enough screen time to explain 12+ characters in a movie, that you could do in a single video game campaign, or even a novel.

Mass Effect is going to have this same problem. There's no way to can get the same storytelling experience from a 2 hour movie compared to a 40+ hour game.... Same goes for BioShock, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Last of Us ....The only way to make these titles into movies will be to cut so much out that the gamers love. This will pretty much alienate the audience that made the brand popular, all to appease critics or a new audience that didn't play the games in the first place (take your pick).

Personally if i want to experience an amazing story... I choose video games like Red Dead Redemption, Silent hill 2, Fallout 2, Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Mass Effect, KotoR, BioShock, Last of Us, The Witcher 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Uncharted 2..... and many more. I for one do not want to see any of these games ever made into movies, and definitely don't want to see a watered down version that is cut to a 2 hour movie for a 50+ year old critic that doesn't respect video games as a medium. As far as video games are concerned they have SURPASSED anything Hollywood has accomplished in the past 100 years and maybe the critics are simply jealous of the storytelling we have, and therefore will never give a film based on a game a decent review.

TL:DR - Video games should never be made into movies....... and Movies should never be made into games.

@AdamEdge: TL;DR*

Also, movies shouldn't be made into games?

Why? Force Awakens and the Battlefronts from Star Wars are excellent

LoTR have also been made into amazing games such as Battle for Middle Earth or the Third Age mod for Total War

Everyone knew that the critics would dislike this, but I thought it was very entertaining and well-made. I'm not a Warcraft fan, but I've acquired some knowledge by reading about the games on sites like Gamespot and the occasional plunge into a wiki.

@wkadalie: It's not LotR or GoT, true, but it seems that the producers wanted the movie to be like lotr or got in the "warcraft world", so i think the critics deservedly compare it to those two franchises.

@Berserk8989: My biased view is that critics compare all movies to the same perceived masterpieces (The Godfather, among others), where things like unrealistic stuff, action scenes and just plain entertainment don't score that high. It's a good thing that critics aren't right about anything (because there's no need for a critic on an objective matter), but critics carry a lot of weight and influence people's choices. Sadly/fortunately, most people don't listen to the critics, because the last Transformers movie made more than 1,1 billion dollars and the Oscar Best Picture winner Spotlight has earned less than 100 million dollars.

Did anybody really think this movie would be something more than commercialized garbage for brainless philistines? Not sure if this really even qualifies as a movie since there is little to no story, coherent plot or even actors it's just 90 minutes computer generated idiocy consisting of a few minutes of campy dialogue in between the ridiculous fight sequences with just enough of a plot thrown in to set up the inevitable sequel. Sadly though it will still make tons of money because the average American consumer has the critical thinking skills equivalent to that of an 8 year old child thus ensuring Warcraft 2 in already in the works. Movies like this are cultural rape.

Though I'm usually aligned with critics point of view when it comes to reviews on games/movies, there have been several times where I just outright disagree with them and ended up loving something they reviewed so negatively... The whole thing with the story not entirely relevant on the original lore was already mentioned way beforehand so I suppose I'll know what to expect... still looking forward to watching this, though.

The cool hard truth about this film, is that it is just a blowjob for Warcraft fans. If it is a bad blowjob, warcraft fans will still love it, cuz its a blowjob, if its a good one, thats cool, but it will never be more than just a blowjob.
