Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman Shares The Zombie Apocalypse Origin

The comic creator Robert Kirkman has provided a brief explanation of where the zombies came from in The Walking Dead, and the reason might surprise you.

It's been a decade since AMC's The Walking Dead first started and nearly a year since the comic book's surprise conclusion with issue #193. Despite the relentless passage of time, we still love our zombie stories--and they don't seem to be going away any time soon. With that in mind, writer and co-creator Robert Kirkman has revealed what started the zombie apocalypse in his fictional series. Turns out it was aliens all along--well, sort of. What remains to be seen is whether the often-sarcastic Kirkman was joking, as he shared the potential revelation in a two-word tweet that doubles down on something originally shared many years ago.

In responding to a fan on Twitter who asked how the series' zombies came to be, Kirkman said space had something to do with it. Apparently, a "space spore" is what created the walkers in TWD's universe.

As GameSpot sister site Comic Book notes, Kirkman and original series artist Tony Moore pitched a continuation to George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead, a 1968 horror film in which scientists thought reanimated corpses were caused by a returning space probe's explosive radiation. Kirkman's "space spore" answer is likely an homage to Romero's cult horror classic.

Kirkman's answer seemingly corroborates previous statements he has given, such as one in 2018 where he said the zombie infection and resulting calamity was because of "a crazy sci-fi thing that would make the story all that much weirder."

In that same 2018 interview, Kirkman essentially said the zombie apocalypse's cause matters very little because he doesn't believe the series' characters would buy any explanation. "Honestly if a scientist from Washington came to the character and told them what happened the characters would just shrug and say 'Oh… okay,'" Kirkman said at the time. "It wouldn’t change their lives at all."

In an interview from 2017, Kirkman said AMC's The Walking Dead is unlikely to explore a cure for the infectious virus, citing that it "would be a boring show" if everything wrapped up neatly with a cure. So while the comic book has ended, we'll have to wait and see how the television show continues to handle the walkers.

COVID-19 may have temporarily halted the series, but there is plenty on the way. As part of Comic-Con, we've learned when The Walking Dead Season 10 returns, as well as when Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 premieres. However, Season 11 of The Walking Dead has been delayed, although we do now know when to expect the new spin-off series, The Walking Dead: World Beyond.

My headcanon is this...

The virus, or whatever it is, has been here longer than humanity.

It turned the Sleestaks into crude oil.

It was the reason why mummies had their brains removed and thrown in the trash rather kept like other internal organs.

The zombies considered Lot's wife to be delicious, delicious food. Like salt. (Never look back when the zombies are chasing you.) Same for Orpheus.

The siege of Rome, where cannibalism was a thing, wasn't about conquering the city, but about quarantine.

@EvilTyger: That sound like a great story...I wouldn't like it for TWD. But that sounds like a great premise for another story.

Sounds like an explanation from a man who isn't interested in answering this question anymore. He's probably tired of talking about the franchise. He ended it six months ago. He probably want to move on. Wouldn't blame him. He never seemed interested in giving the zombies an origin.

Ha! I knew it from the start.

At the end of the first episode of The Walking Dead, they played an obscure song by decently known '80s band, Wang Chung called, "Space Junk". I really had a feeling this had something to do with what happened.

Did he have any explanation as to how the living characters became more thoughtless and predictable than the dead ones?

For me TWD has me imaging what the end would look like, as in RL there may not be an happy ending in TWD as there is no talk of an cure so the story can finish with the characters in an open ended situation like the Mist written by Stephen king and not the miniseries just the book version as there was no hope and the reader had to use their imagination on what happened to those who made it to the car.

@lonewolf1044: Most of the zombies would of decayed/rotted to the point that they couldn't even walk around anymore if TWD was real. There are two types of zombies, the literal undead with decay and "living zombies" which are basically humans who lost their minds. The former wouldn't be a problem if you bunker down and wait for the majority of them to rot.

@gamingdevil800: some zombie fictions explain this though. The virus that infects them also repels the type of bacteria that eats away at dead flesh, thereby halting or severely slowing the decaying process.

*without reading article* In a situation like this, writers usually don't have a concrete explanation, probably because they didn't feel it's necessary, and will give a silly explanation for their own personal amusement and to shut fans up.

*after reading article* Yep.

I've done a zombie apocalypse story that proceeded much in the same fashion. It was the result of aliens, but a call for an explanation just never came up, the characters never asked for one, and eventually I had to sort of force it in at the very end of the story. That said, fans kind of figured it out given I had skeletons ripping free of zombie bodies and skittering across the floor on ribs or climbing on ceilings like spiders.

@Barighm: offering explanations for why in the zombie genre is never a good idea. It takes the horror of seeing familiar life flipped into chaotic decay, and makes it feel forced and unrealistic. Why would survivors of a zombie apocalypse be privy to information about how it happened? Does it even matter? The absolute worst zombie flicks I have ever seen are the ones about scientists getting to the bottom of the plague. Those stories arent horrific and tense. Its just cheap sci-fi.

Real horror in the zombie genre is seeing the undead rip through modern suburbia. Having characters see their reckoning in the form of familiar faces that are rotting. There has to be an element of believability for it to feel like true horror. Having a story about scientists and cures is not that.

@Barighm: Season 1 had 2 episodes that were heavy about discovering the cause/a cure for what happened. While I loved season 2 and 3, I really wish they had went more into the science side of things at least in the later episodes.

@Zorlac: If you mean the comic, I have no idea.

If you mean the show...not really. You had the doctor from the CDC say some stuff which essentially boiled down to "No idea. No cure" and that one guy doing research on zombies. That story thread has to be way more involved, evolving over time and leading to a conclusion, to call it "heavy".
