Walking Dead Season 10 Casts Negan's Precious Lucille

A character-focused anthology approach is expected for the season's final episodes airing sometime next year.

AMC's The Walking Dead is finally going to get into Negan's backstory--a major development that fans who have read the comics have been expecting to happen any episode now since Season 7. But it's in the forthcoming wrap-up of Season 10 that we will finally meet Negan's wife Lucille, according to Comicbook.com and a confirming tweet from Hilarie Burton Morgan (The Secret Life of Bees, Fox's Lethal Weapon) who will play the part.

An interesting curveball in the casting announcement is that the couple will be played by real-life married couple Hilarie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Jeffrey has been on the horror series since 2016, playing Negan, the totalitarian leader of the Saviors. Negan has long wielded a baseball bat named after his wife, Lucille--but why and the significance of that hasn't yet been delved into. In the comics, the relationship got its own standalone prequel volume after being released as individual chapters back in 2016. It's also unknown the degree to which the show might deviate from the source material, or how much of it will draw from at all.

But what we do know--and what is expected for the final six Season 10 episodes that will air next year--is the remaining episodes will follow an anthology format focusing on individual characters each hour. At the very least, Lucille will factor into one of these episodes.

Over the summer, it was announced that Season 11 had also cast another mythic figure in The Walking Dead universe--actor Margot Bingham (Boardwalk Empire, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as the mysterious Stephanie. It's still unknown when that season will premiere, but it has been rumored to begin in late 2021, with the second half airing in 2022.
