Wal-Mart taking on GameStop, will soon accept video game trade-ins

US retailer hoping to "shake up" the secondhand market; trade-ins will start March 26 while inventory should be widely available this summer.

Watch out, GameStop, you have a new competitor in the used game market. Wal-Mart announced today that it will begin accepting video game software trade-ins at 3,100 stores nationwide on March 26.

During a conference call attended by GameSpot, Wal-Mart merchandising chief Duncan Mac Naughton said Wal-Mart is hoping to "shake up" the secondhand market and steal some marketshare away from competitors like GameStop.

There are 880 million video games sitting in homes today, Mac Naughton said. And according to a cited NPD report, 80 percent of these games, or more than 700 million, are rarely played. Clearly, there is a market for second-hand games, just look at GameStop's quarterly revenue for evidence of that. But why trade these games in at Wal-Mart instead of GameStop or Best Buy?

No Caption Provided

Wal-Mart's "true differentiator," Mac Naughton said, is that you can use your in-store credit for purchases outside of gaming like food and clothing. Indeed, GameStop can't compete there. But unlike GameStop, Wal-Mart will not have a cash option for trade-ins. It's credit or nothing. And on top of that, Wal-Mart will only accept games, not hardware.

Wal-Mart will accept all games (provided they are not scratched or damaged beyond repair) and refurbish them via a third-party company. These games will then be sold at stores and online with a "certified pre-owned" label on their packaging. Wal-Mart expects to have a solid inventory of secondhand games available this summer.

GameStop has its own dedicated refurbishment center in Grapevine, Texas and it is this very operation that management believes sets GameStop apart from competitors. We've reached out to Gamestop for comment on this story but we have not heard back.

Just because Wal-Mart is getting into the used game market, it doesn't mean the company is backing away from new games anytime soon. The company's new release business will "remain a focus" for Wal-Mart going forward, Mac Naughton said.

But why get into the secondhand market now, in 2014, when an increasing amount of attention is paid to download services? It's a question we poised to Mac Naughton and he said Wal-Mart isn't worried because bandwidth into homes is still an issue for many. Still, he explained that Wal-Mart is indeed eyeing the digital market as a future growth opportunity.

"We think being on the shoulders of disruptive tech is good," he said. "We're ready to grow into digital as that business emerges."

Wal-Mart's move into the used-game market will also conceivably affect publishers like Electronic Arts and Activision, which do not participate in second-hand sales. We've also reached out to these companies, but have not heard back. We'll have more in the future.

Finally, though Mac Naughton never mentioned GameStop by name during the call, he said Wal-Mart's aim with its secondhand program is to "pay more than anybody else" for your old games. Of course, trade-in prices will vary, but he said the average price paid per title should be around $35.

Here's how Wal-Mart's used-game program works:

  • Customers bring their working video games, in the original packaging, to the electronics department.
  • Associates scan the UPC code on the case and evaluate the game for obvious damage such as deep scratches or cracks.
  • The customer is then provided with a trade-in value for each game to accept.
  • The total value accepted by the customer is awarded immediately and can be applied at checkout in a Walmart store or Sam’s Club, or online at Walmart.com or SamsClub.com

This is going to hit Gamestop hard, some people fall on hard times and have to sell their game now they can sell and buy food or cloths if needed.

It's good for Walmart as it gets more people into their stores. IF they lower their advertising budget and give more money they will attract a huge number of people low income people to Walmart who may have though about going someplace else.

If people can stomach going to Wallmart this should be pretty good incentive to upgrade to a next gen console as Wallmart sells those too.

Game Xchange is my top stop used game shop. While Gamestop pushes more towards the new, Xchange has a lot of value in the old as well. Im always lookin for anything pre-PS2, chance for random strategy guides, testing any non M rated games, and disc repair.

I'm not a walmart fan but this is great news. For too long, gamespot has been able to pay out criminally low on games. Hopefully this competition will set them proper.

This is a smart move by Walmart. Best Buy has been trying their hand at the used game market for a while now too. Gamestop is down right now, perfect time to kick them.

I don't see this effecting Gamestop that heavily. If you want quality pre-owned you're going to want to go to Gamestop because I'm fairly certain (and this is wildly stereotypical here) that the people who shop Walmart probably don't take care of their games like the people who shop Gamestop do. I'm pretty sure you'll have lots of game discs in poor condition (scratches and the like) at Walmart.

However, Walmart could probably afford to not make as much margin on pre-owned and still profit heavily by offering better trade in values than Gamestop, a specialty retailer that only deals in video game merchandise. Hmmm, maybe not such a good thing for Gamestop after all. Ah well. I'll continue to invest in new games that I never trade in and buy them all on Amazon and have them shipped right to my door on launch day.

@jshipley01eb blu-ray discs are very durable i don't think the quality is going to be a factor.

The only thing GameStop has is the rewards membership which is pretty good, but as you said walmart can use its size and ability to absorb lower margins to compete with anything GameStop can do as a small retailer. Plus walmart's biggest advantage is their location. They are down the street from consumers, where they go grocery shopping anyway every week.

So the largest retailer in the U.S. just added a service that was pretty much the only reason to ever go to GameStop. Those GameStop executives better start packing their golden parachutes.

I think what this will do is accelerate the move to going digital. Game developers are cringing at this, they will start shooting some shots over the bow of these retailers, adding activation codes to games or making used games very unappealing by taking away certain extra content as they already do to a limited degree already.

The death of single player games is upon us. Should be interesting to see how Infamous SS and Metal Gear Ground Zero do.. I bet these two games will be crippled by second hand sales.

@da_chub why deal with getting something through the mail when you can pick it up at the store right away? I hate dealing with individual sellers it's a pain. the last book i bought from Amazon was sold through a small retailer and it took almost a month before it got to me.

Walmart putting another store out of business. Who would have thought it? GameStop is a big company, but not big enough to match Walmart. They will be gone in 10 years...and I don't even like Walmart.

I try to avoid Wal-mart whenever possible. That place gives me anxiety and slightly creeps me out. The only time I can handle going there is late night when the cattle call is clear. Even then I feel like a fat, scum bag consumer.

Well Gamestop still charges $55 for a used game. Which is BS. Hopefully Walmart is in the $40 range. Not like it really matters for me anyways being on PC and all.

Wal-Mart planning to pay an average of $35 per game traded in? Watch out GameStop, you have serious competition. If this works out very well for Wal-Mart, it may pressure GameStop into raising the cash payouts for each trade-in. Currently, they pay like $5 per game, but it could go up to $10 or $15 to remain competitive with Wal-Mart.
