Vista gets Live-wired in May

Games for Windows - Live launches May 8; free silver membership includes some online play, gold membership includes cross-platform play.

Microsoft has been touting an Xbox-Live-like service for PC gamers ever since the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2006, when Bill Gates introduced the notion of Live Anywhere. The proposed service would connect mobile phones, PCs, and Xbox 360s with a universal account that logs gamers' stats, displays friends lists, and sends messages between devices.

Today, Microsoft officially announced the PC portion of Live--called Games for Windows - Live--and its release date. Beginning May 8, Windows Vista gamers will be able to start collecting achievements and tallying a Gamerscore (or add on to what they've already earned on the Xbox 360), put together friends lists, and send text and voice messages, just like Xbox 360 owners.

Games for Windows - Live looks awfully familiar.
Games for Windows - Live looks awfully familiar.

The Games for Windows portion of Live isn't a separate account--it's actually an extension of the overall Live service. As such, those who already have an Xbox Live account will already have a Games for Windows - Live account at no extra cost.

The pricing will remain the same for the two-tiered service, with Silver memberships being free and Gold memberships staying at $49.99. However, there will be some differences in privileges, as illustrated below.

Silver benefits
Unified with Xbox Live account
Single-player achievements
Private text and voice chat
Friends list
PC-only multiplayer, including browsing a list of active PC games

Gold benefits (includes all Silver benefits)
Multiplayer matchmaking with friends
TrueSkill matchmaking
Multiplayer achievements
Cross-platform gameplay

The first game to take advantage of Games for Windows - Live will be Halo 2, which will also be released on May 8. Following shortly after that in June will be FASA Studio's Shadowrun, which will be the first game to allow Xbox 360 and Vista gamers to play with or against each other. Later this year, Microsoft will also release the Xbox Live Arcade hit Uno for Vista, which will also allow cross-platform play.

PC users have friends, too.
PC users have friends, too.

Games for Windows - Live won't launch with a comparable Marketplace feature, but Microsoft plans to extend the features and functionality of Live over time. "Right now, we're focusing on what matters most, which we really think is gaming," marketing manager for Xbox Live Aaron Greenberg told GameSpot.

The look of Live on Vista will be familiar to those who have experience with Xbox Live and will include the same look and the ability to use the guide button with an Xbox 360 controller for Windows. "All the community features that we're used to on the Xbox will look and feel the same on the PC," said Greenberg. "That's the idea of this being one service and one look and feel."

Microsoft hopes that having two connected branches of Live--one for the Xbox 360 and one for the PC--will encourage developers to think differently about how they make games. Kevin Unangst, director of Games for Windows, offered the example of a PC gamer, outfitted with a mouse and keyboard, serving as the decision-making general of a real-time strategy game while Xbox 360 owners play as the grunts on the battlefield.

When asked about the May 8 launch of Games for Windows - Live paired with the spring Xbox 360 dashboard update, Greenberg would only say that Microsoft considers Games for Windows - Live a part of the update, and that Microsoft would have more information at a later date.

This definetely is another way for Microsoft to make money from consumers. Evry1 shud boycot this. I dont mind £40 (im 12 membership holder) on the xbox 360, a free service if your a gold member on xbox360 is ok but definetely not gonna pay 2 fees. little things annoy you!! AHHH!!!

So will this mean that the PC games will have to downgrade their graphics to play with Xbox 360 players? I think thats a terrible idea for that sole reason (not that the idea to bring players together isn't). So I am guessing that PS3/PC games will not appear in this Vista Live thing.

Can't wait :) "I'm so glad that I don't have to pay extra for this service! ... now I'm just waiting until Microsoft fixes Vista." From personal experiance, there's not a great deal TO fix. Vista seems very stable and reliable. Certainly no major bugs or crashes in use to date for me. I'd be happy to install Windows Live and start using it with my future games that support it. PC Gaming needs to be kept seperate from console gaming really, we don't want too many of the screaming 10 year olds coming and sharing in all the fun ;)

all for it, something that enables you to see what your mates are playing and go join em, as well as helping find new people to beat, is a great idea. Obviously paying for things i could really do myself for free if i could be bothered is something that would have to be cheap enough to want it.

This will be gay because the FPS players on PC will be able to own the 360 ones because a mouse and keyboard is a much better controller. They better come out with a mouse and keyboard for the 360 or find some way to make it fair. Also I think its a little cheap that people will be able to rack up Gamerscoreon Pc and 360 so the average Gamerscore will increase from around 7000 to about 15000 witch is also crap. I am proud of my 11000 and that will be nothing after this update. *Edit* Yes I am an Achievement Whore but that was not my only point. I don't really like PC games because of my lack of a computer that could run any decent games. Now for the people who play 360 games online, how are we going to be able to compete with the PC mouse and keyboard, with its much better handling and what not?

Then whats the point of even coming out with an Xbox 360 if people are going to be able to play the same games on a PC with the same type of service? I mean come on, I should have saved the $600 I spent on my 360 and used it to upgrade my PC. I'm not really a fan of this new Windows Live idea. I mean here I am thinking that because I own a 360 I was special. Now any shmoe with a PC can play the same games and use the same LIVE features. Not to mention how can you justify the quality of game play. Right now everyone on an Xbox 360 has the same hardware setup which equals the same advantages/disadvantages. Now with computers having the same access, you will have people on super rigs or people on old busted machines joining your game that either stomp you or slow your game play down. How could this be considered Fair or Equal and how can Microsoft just give away the service that make’s the Xbox 360 special???

The Games for Windows portion of Live isn't a separate account--it's actually an extension of the overall Live service. As such, those who already have an Xbox Live account will already have a Games for Windows - Live account at no extra cost. This should mean that it's essentially One Gold Account (to rule them all), and now the money you spend (or don't) on your 360 now carries over to the PC. So same fee, double the uses. That I can get behind, but all the walls and conditions are troublesome, and lots of gamers will feel shafted. No way in this life are PC gamers going to pay extra for multiplayer, and choking off achievements seems to be the only compromise. Considering PC gamers never had to care about that... hard to say. The REAL question is.. for a game to get certified Games for Windows, is a developer forced to neuter their multiplay features to comply with these rules?? "You say you want a revolution..."

Well this is better for Xbox 360 owners (like me) who already has Xbox Live. If you read the article carefully, NO you do NOT pay again for an XBL account. You use the same account on PC. Too bad it's just for Vista... and i'm not going to upgrade soon... New dashboard update? Now that's cool news.

I don't get it: some of you won't pay $50 for online PC gaming but think it's OK for online 360 gaming? I sure don't want to pay for any online gaming and I'm fed up with Xbox Live for my 360. It took me a phone call of 12 mins 40 secs to make sure that MS doesn't automatically withdraw money from my bank account because I can't delete my credit card info from my Live account or choose to downgrade to Silver! Now PC Silver players are getting online gaming free while 360 players still can't play online unless they cough up for Gold? I really hope that 360 Silver players will be able to play online too and that we get to edit our credit card info & membership online or I will swap my 360 for a PS3.

If Shadowrun is going to be an example they're gonna start crippling PC controls and adding auto-aim for console users to balance it out. Which is another great reason to buy live for PC. Thank you for giving me another reason to quit PC gaming altogether.

@I-town4I: Why don't you download the patch for those games? The patch is out for Battlefield 2 and.... Why are you still play CS: 1.6 dude? Times have changed, it's time to upgrade to source man. For that matter, why the hell are you playing Battlefield 2 still? My advice to you... either find patchs and quit complaining like I did.... or join the 21st century instead of being a 1.6 snob.

Cool.....Too bad Vista blows hard ones. I'd get it but, the thought of being owned by PC gamers is to much. it's funy though, becuase when they get Halo 2 no one will be playing that piece of overrated **** Halo 3 will be around the corner, so what 2 months of playing with PC gamers, then console and PC are seperate again?

I think this is awesome. It allows people to play on Live with people with Xbox 360's. My friends are big PC gamers, and I primarily play console, 360 in particular. So this is going to be really sweet because one of my friends Xbox 360 broke months ago, and he's getting Vista and Halo 2 Vista, so we can play without him having to buy a new 360. Another friend of mine says he'll be getting this, and he's never owned or played Xbox 360. So now we'll finally be able to play. I've actually got plans on betting who's going to win, me or my friend, and find out who the real n00b is on each platform. The whole mouse & keyboard being better than a controller doesn't bother me. I'm used to a controller and that's what works for me. Mice and keyboards may be more accurate, but that doesn't mean I am at a disadvantage.
