Valve's Steam Network Is Down [UPDATE]

Store, communities, and game servers currently unavailable.

Update: Steam appears to be back online as of 11 AM PT. We'll continue to monitor the situation in case any other issues arise.

Original Story: Valve's steam service is currently down, with the store, friends lists, and game servers unavailable. The downtime coincides with the start of the annual Winter sale, during which a range of games are heavily discounted.

Naturally, interest in discounts results in considerable network activity on Steam. Following the launch of the sale on December 22 the store was running a bit slow, so it is thought that the traffic could also be the cause of Steam going completely offline.

However, popular gaming network services such as Steam, Xbox Live, and PlayStation Network have previously been the target of DDoS attacks during the Holiday period. Valve has not officially addressed the cause of the issues or said when the service will return.

Along with the sales, Valve has also officially kicked off The Steam Awards. Nominations for this began last month, and now users can vote for a winner in a different category each day. Voting earns you trading cards. The winners of The Steam Awards will be announced on December 31.

The fact that I'm downloading a 120 items for $1,000 shows how effective this holiday sale is. The 120 items contains 500+ games, but now I can't buy. We definitely need alternatives.

Why is Valve not bound by the anti-trust laws? I mean some healthy competition would never hurt... that way when Steam goes down, then we have alternatives. I mean I love Steam and the incredible platform it offers, but when things go down like this (I'm sure it's not their fault), then we are not stuck with our hands down our pants.

@rhenom: They're not really competitors. They contain a very limited amount of games and Steam would wipe the floor with their catalog. Is there any other company that contains an amount that closely resembles the Steam catalog?

@pongley: Good point. I'm just wondering why other companies are not as good as Valve is. Let's forget the laws for a second... as a consumer, I'd like to have alternatives, but I just don't have them right now.

@kanonym: Because a lot of other companies don't want to try and step into that market. The problem is that Valve has been doing this long enough that they have a very solid foothold in the market People have 100's of games in their steam libraries if not more and many of those people like the convenience of having their games in one place. Add in that Origin, Microsoft, and Ubisoft have all tried to cut in on the market (though on a smaller scale) and haven't done amazingly well at it.

So look at this as a potential competitor. You would be looking to try and do something which big companies have already tried to do without much success on top of needing to somehow convince consumers away from a platform they are already heavily invested in. Nobody is really willing to take that kind of risk. Trying to start a digital store like steam is not a cheap move and when faced with that much adversity it's pretty clear why nobody really wants to try to compete with them.

@sellingthings: Except they really aren't. Sure there are groups like Origin and gog that are in the same market but neither of them are on the same kind of level. Being in the same field doesn't make you competition. The ability to compete does and as it stands steam is so far ahead of everyone else that they might as well be running the race alone.

@phoenix1289: I myself have over 500 games on Steam. You're right though, it'd be incredibly difficult (if not impossible) to be able to compete with a giant like Valve. I guess I have to realize that I'm not living in a fantasy world.

@kanonym: Sure, in a perfect world there would be a similar sized competitor to Steam, but that isn't Valve's fault and certainly not an anti-trust issue.

@rhenom: Yes I'm beating myself up over saying "anti-trust laws". What I really meant to say is that there should be healthy competition period. As of now, I have downloaded all of these "competitors" but they just don't have the high quantity and variety that Valve has.

@kanonym: GoG Galaxy has a lot of games. That Steam has big catalog filled with 90% shovelware doesn't mean Steam is wiping the floor with the rest.

@Mausthemighty: Well they actually are wiping the floor with the other guys. Had you the choice of choosing a single platform, there's no doubt in my mind that people would choose Steam. Also, Steam has plenty of rocking games, so I wouldn't really say it's shovelware.

@rolento25: Amen to that (sorry God). I game on Steam exclusively... You mean they made half life 2? That's huge. Unfortunately for me, Blizzard is doing their own exclusive thing and I can't play Overwatch or WoW or diablo 3 and StarCraft 2. I think Blizz though is an exception. Also EA. These are the only exceptions. That's my opinion. These companies would get a lot of buyers if they submit to Valve.

@kanonym: but... the point is there ARE competitors. Do you want some kind of law intentionally crippling Steam to let the competitors catch up based on something other than their own merits? Because that sounds messed up to me. GoG continues to grow and improve, and I find its business model preferable, but it also lacks great features that Steam has in its client and its library doesn't come anywhere near as close in size (and perhaps never will given the DRM-free stance). I'd say Steam has healthy competition, and it would be wrong to artificially hamstring their company just for the sake of leveling a playing field with competitors that simply aren't as good in many ways

@xantufrog: No... I love Valve and Steam. I just don't like it that when they go down, that I can't buy the games offered by them that I want, from other companies. I shouldn't have used the words "anti-trust" and "legally" because Steam knows what they're doing and they're obviously not breaking the law. The fact remains though, that other companies need to get their crap straight and start providing alternatives. It's a hungry market and no one dares to stand up to Steam... Hey, you know what? This should be a wake up call for other companies. The demand is there, but the supply isn't.

@kanonym: fair enough! I really like GoG and their DRM-free model - but I can't see them ever growing as large as Steam because a lot of huge pubs aren't willing to distribute their newest AAA game without DRM

@xantufrog: Oh I absolutely love GoG. The Witcher 3 is my favorite all time game. Unfortunately for us players though, the DRM is needed. The lack of DRM would invite a boatload of piracy, which would result in game devs losing money to pirates. To support the devs and the publisher, the DRM is needed, to support the players, DRM is a huge waste of performance and inconvenience.

@game_spock: I'm assuming because the game rocks and they have a nice loyal fan base that respects their company enough to buy the game as opposed to pirating it. That's not the case with most games though. Try convincing someone to buy a game instead of getting it for free. People would have to want to support their devs in order to pay for it... Or maybe just have a conscious. Hahaha yes It's funny because most people don't.
