Uncharted PS4 Collection Is a "System-Seller," Sony Says

"It certainly has the power to be a system-seller this Christmas."

346 Comments

With Sony's first-party PlayStation 4 games lineup this holiday lacking major titles by the company's own admission, Sony is looking to Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection to help sell consoles. PlayStation UK product manager Joe Palmer says in a new interview that, because so many PS4 owners have never played Uncharted before, this collection has the potential be had a major impact on system sales.

"It certainly has the power to be a system-seller this Christmas," Palmer told MCV. "It offers fantastic value as a gifting proposition, giving newcomers the chance to pick up a PlayStation 4 with three great games at a very competitive price. PlayStation's audience base has also changed significantly since the original Uncharted games were released, so there's a huge number of gamers looking to buy a PS4 who may never have played these games before."

By Naughty Dog's own estimations, around 80 percent of PS4 owners have never played an Uncharted game. Palmer said The Nathan Drake Collection not only appeals to these people, but also fans who already played the game but want to "play through the series again in all its remastered glory."

The Nathan Drake Collection launches tomorrow, October 9, the same day that the PS4 price drops to $350. The price cut also applies to numerous bundles, including The Nathan Drake Collection package.

The Nathan Drake Collection, which includes 1080p/60fps versions of the PlayStation 3 games Drake's Fortune,Among Thieves, and Drake's Deception (but not PS Vita title Golden Abyss), was developed by Bluepoint Games, not Naughty Dog. It also comes with access to the Uncharted 4: A Thief's End multiplayer beta, which begins in December.

I think I am the target audience for this, I never owned a PS3 so I never played these. I picked up the Uncharted Collection and I have played through Drake's Fortune already (short), and I am probably 75-80% finished with Among Thieves. I will say this, these games have great characters and personality but the stories are super linear, not very long, and aren't something I haven't seen many times before, and often done better elsewhere, whether its Indiana Jones, Romancing The Stone, or Tomb Raider.

So the characters and dialogue are superb, and the story is ok - serviceable. Those are the highpoints. Then there are the game mechanics, which to be honest, I found to be frightfully bad. The shooting isn't good, I mean with so many shooters out there to learn from, these shooting mechanics are just bad, the cover and stealth systems are extremely loose, the variety of weapons could be much improved, and little quality of life things like the need to manually pick up ammunition and Drake wanting to walk off of cliff and sometimes grab onto the edge, other times not really. Also the game being mostly a platformer but loving to give you awkward camera angles and perspectives that make the platforming unnecessarily difficult in some spots. When there are so many games that do and have done this type of gameplay; Assassin's Creed for platforming and parcour. Tomb Raider, which is an exact analogue to this game but mechanically superior in every way. CoD, BF, and the litany of other FPS games for shooting mechanics. Splinter Cell and Metal Gear for stealth mechanics, the list could go on forever, and all of them have done it better than Uncharted.

To summarize, I frankly am not all that impressed with this series after all the hype I had heard. Yes the characters and dialogue are well done, but that is IT. Everything else is sub par, the games are otherwise unoriginal and not mechanically well executed. The AI is even insanely dumb.

I was under the impression that a truly excellent game brought all the elements together and did them all very well; graphics, story, characters, mechanics and gameplay. Not just one of those aspects and forget about the rest. I just don't get the praise these games have received.

Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, and Uncharted 4, Disgaea 5, and the slim powerful console itself are more than enough reason to PS4. An old collection remake, however, is not a system seller.

There is an issue with this entire interview.

Where is the advertisement if it is meant to be a system seller?

Beyond the occasional poster on the tube ,with quotes from twitter handles as opposed to publications, I rarely see anything mentioning UC4.

At this moment, Sony has not done the best job marketing its exclusives outside of the gaming community (most of which has already transitioned to the next gen).

It's certainly not a system seller for any one with a ps3... the uncharted games all can be bought for $5 each on ebay... I know because I bought them all two years ago a few months before buying my ps4.

@kkdrummer: Most Everyone already bought an Xbox One for Halo. That's mostly what Xbox is known for.

So I can't see it moving much more.

@ughz: Halo is Xbox Mascot... It would be bought from the beginning in ready. That is a fact. Not like Xbox did'nt have any game whilst waiting

Most would already own an Xbox I'm telling you Brother. Don't be sad now okay. :P

@strrckshn: That's not "a fact".

People like Halo. That doesn't mean they immediately ran out to buy a console because in a few years another Halo game might be coming out. People have lives and expenses and buying a console is the last thing they care about, especially the average gamer.

Only the stupidest of the retards immediately bought a console because it would eventually have Halo. Intelligent people wait for discounts - which have happened. Bundles, which are happening. More games, which is happening on a regular basis.

@ughz: Like I said most people who are going to buy Halo 5 probably already own the Xbox One.

I'm sticking to it. We shall see. But marks my words, it won't move that many. As what the fans think it will move.

@DemannameD: well...some spent $400 for a 4 hours long campaign.

And maybe you forgot...Halo is campaign and multiplayer. People will spend 10x more time with online gaming after they finished the campaign.

@sladakrobot: what game had a 4 hour campaign? That only came out on a next gen system? I didn't forget the multiplayer... that would be $450.

@sladakrobot: I really don't think the order was ever considered a system seller... it was a first wave game... People are going to buy a new system when I comes out... They need games for it. The Order got a whopping 5... I don't know how many people would call it a system seller.

I believe I've read that most people that play halo online don't even beat the single player campaign. So the majority of Halo fans that like it for Online won't care about the 12 hour campaign... The campaign of Halo was always my favorite part. The multiplayer hasn't been My thing since halo 2.

Halo (the series) is a system seller... But don't expect them to sell a lot of systems when i comes out. Most of the Xbox owners out there are Xbox owners because of Halo. Halo sells the system well before the game arrives.

No, it really isn't. Uncharted 4 might be a system seller, but just about everyone who has a PlayStation 4 graduated from PS3 and has already played the Uncharted games. I really don't get where Sony pulled that "80 percent of PS4 owners never played Uncharted before" from. I'm sick of the hype regarding this collection. Pathetic generation, this.

@JustPlainLucas:

They obviously checked everyones PSN names/trophy lists on PS4 to see if they ever played an Uncharted game.

Most people who gamed on PS3 most likely kept the same username for PS4.

So they saw around 20% of PS4 owners have at least one Uncharted game on their trophy lists. The other 80% don't,

Sure, we will never know EXACT numbers for various reasons, but this gives us a rough idea.

@stuff238: Need to think of all the ones who just played it at a friends house too. Or rented it and never used the same PSN id with their PS4.

I would have used my same id with my PS4 but Sony has screwed up my accounts so many times now i never depend on my account being around forever. Because it usually just gets compromised from their terrible security.

And never buy digital from Sony. Cuz if you change your account they cannot transfer games over to your new account that you bought digitally. Even if it was their fault your account gone.

I hope people realize that when sells do pick up later, the Uncharted collection has very little to do with it and can be more attributed to the system price drop...

This stuff about exclusives cracks me up. I own both and guess what i will be playing this holiday. Metal gear v. Gta v. Witcher 3. Fallout 4. Out of all goty candidates, there is only one exclusive and we all knew it would be a goty contender even when it was announced. Exclusives do not a fun system make since i spend 98 percent of time not playing them. kjjii

I think only Sony fanboys would agree, but they most likely have a PS4 already. I wouldn't consider any remake a system seller--not Halo Collection and not this.

@yelwarraef: I'd say both are system sellers actually. Both have pretty big fan bases and new comers to the series looking to get caught up.

@troopah: The ironic thing is that last gen more games on Xbox360 were 1080p than games on PS3.

Im guessing that is why PS3 fans only care about 1080p now. The gameplay don't matter, The content don't matter, the story don't matter. As long as we have 1080P!!!!

@capocrimeboss:

Not sure I agree. There's no doubting Ps4 has a tiny bit more horsepower but the xbox exclusive games line up is nothing short of awesome. If you want a slightly more powerful box to play third party games and HD remakes then sure, invest in a Ps4.
